Most people attach themselves to networks and don't seek out new shows, so the TNT viewers would not turn the channel to watch the same show if it were on CW. The difference in viewer levels from local market to local market supports the fact that the same kind of viewing patterns goes on for broadcast TV as well.
I would argue that there is some ability to generate channel changing by "clouding" (as it's called in retail, e.g. put computer books next to business books and science books because they appeal to similar audiences) networks. One such cloud would be TNT/TBS/USA, where a show advertised on one of the three would generate channel changing from the other,s due to similar demos and/or programming choices. FX and Spike are another cloud possibility.

LOL That's entusiasm! I'm so glad to have fresh tv! ^^ GG was disapointing and OTH one of the worse episodes ever. PB was good, but the rating is awful. What I can't wait for is CHUCK!
I'm trying not to expect too much out of 90201, so I don't get disapointed. I mean, maybe there is a reason the CW didn't send tapes of the pilot.

When I switched over to watfch Raising The Bar on TNT, I caught the last 5 minutes of The Closer. Yuck...just as yuck as I remember from bits of prior seasons.

I agree with you on that and it is largely why many cable providers clump those channels in the lineup. Unfortuinately, CW shares no clouding with TNT/TBS because Warner has done a really lousy job of cross-promoting CW with any of their cable efforts.

CW's most natural cloud at this point is MTV; I don't watch MTV so I don't know if CW advertises there, but that's where I'd put the advertisement if I was them. Obviously TNT and TBS are adult drama procedural focus, so I wouldn't waste a second of commercial airtime for the CW on them.
Speaking of clouding: not every store does it well. At Borders at lunch, I saw that they had moved the graphic novels/anime next to the exercise/fitness books.

Yes, MTV/VH1. While the soaps on CW won't cross promote to TNT, the comedies from last year (Girlfriends and Aliens in America) most definitely would have cross promoted with TBS's My Boys and House of Payne...and Reaper would have made for great cross promotion with Psych (not a Warner channel, though).

Both are full of page after page of 'airbrushed' looking characters? The ultimate 'poor clouding' these days can be found on Youtube. Family videos side by side with infomercials, porn (until it gets deleted), political ramblings, pirated TV episodes, and funniest animal video entries. What a mess.

You don't have to be owned by the same parent company to cloud, though (although it makes it cheaper to). Networks don't always mind selling airtime (sometimes even swapping it) to promote each other's shows knowing it can help them as well.
But yes, the intelligent thing to do is to advertise specific shows on specific 'similar' networks (hopefully during the timeslots of similar shows).
I do look forward to The Mentalist being advertised on USA (it's just like Psych, but not funny!)

It wasn't at all...in fact in was beyond excellent. One of the best two episodes since season 1. This season looks incredible, and it is a shame that more people aren't watching this show. It bugs the hell out of me that people would rather watch garbage like american idol, dancing with the c-listers and that CSI garbage than shows that are actually good. I guess people want to be idiots and not have to think when they watch tv, so they'd rather watch shows like deal or no deal where you can be paris-hilton dumb and still understand it.
