Not the ending I'd like with the evil temptress winning but ratings aside, the show still has got the chops, even on Lifetime (and even with less likable contestants, as they had this past season).

Good! NFL, you may be the #1 sport in America but with ratings like these for uninteresting matchups like these, it's enough proof that us viewers aren't THAT football-starved to be clamoring for your cable channel to see these "big" games! Shouldn't you suck it up and provide your so-called precious NFL Network to ALL cable customers, and not just to Comcast and satellite TV viewers?

Originally posted by heighteye: I think that the problem with this season's "Fringe" is that they keep using eps. to "set up" another episode, but there never seems to be the big reveal moment. We all thought when we tuned in ep. 1 this season (well, I did anyway!) that we'd learn more about that alternate universe where the Twin Towers still stood, and Leonard Nimoy hung out, etc. etc. But no, we kept getting setups for that ep. (and apparently giving the actor who played Charlie a plausible exit from the show). And when it was finally shown, it didn't tell us that much new. It seems to me it can't decide whether to be a serial or a standalone, and it ends up being neither.
And now it seems to be descending into self-parody. Ah well, sooner or later we all do. You, me, Maureen Dowd, even Ryan Seacrest. ;-)

BETTER ep last night, but I still couldn't tear myself away from The Office. Recyclops!
Bottom line: the only difference for Fringe this season, compared to last, is this new crappy time slot, which I suspected would be the case when FOX announced this move back in mid-May. This is the real reason this show's Live ratings have fallen so greatly.
The idea that the show has somehow lost its way is a cop out. It still has its core fan base of about 8-10 million (e.g. its big DVR audience) and it still is of good quality. Now, if only it can move to a better night and time so advertisers can pay more of a premium for its ads on the show with more Live viewers.
I can only speak for myself, Doug--I enjoyed the show a lot more last season, though I saw a lot of problems, which I was hoping they'd fix--they fixed 'em the wrong way.
While I agree FOX is looking at DVR #'s and thinking about how to get those people back to watching it 'live', I think citing DVR data is kind of a cop-out in itself. When you're excited about a show, you watch it ASAP.
It's a crappy timeslot, but FOX has to put something there. And even though I think Fringe is probably going to a third season, I'm not convinced FOX is going to give it a primo timeslot again. It could end up going to Friday. And since I never wanted it to run more than three years, I wouldn't mind one bit. I LOVED watching The X-Files on Friday--it was pure crap for most of its tenure on Sunday.

Yes, more and more people are feeling "excited" to watch 10-15 minutes of ads mixed in with an hourlong drama!

Hell's Kitchen's 5th season aired there last winter/spring. Did better in viewers and demo. How about the next season of HK in that spot?

Even Kitchen Nightmares had a better demo in that slot quite a few times last fall. Generally Bones is contributing to the rating increases on Fox Thursday from last fall, not Fringe.

I believe Kitchen Nightmares was doing over a 2.0 in the slot until the World Series, and even hit as high as a 2.8 on some occasions. And, Hell's Kitchen consistently did a 3.0-3.4 demo in the slot. That's miles better compared to the 2.0 demo Fringe is getting.
With Kitchen Nightmares, I think FOX is going to be programming that on Fridays with Our Little Genius in the near future. If both works, that could fix their Fridays for a little while.
Jack and Dan is an interesting case for FOX. It's casting now and the episodes are starting production soon. I don't see it as a summer show for FOX or something they would wait until the fall to launch. It wouldn't surprise me to see it in launch in March/April, perhaps in Fringe's spot. Fringe would run straight through its episodes.

I'm surprised that Project Runway hit a season high. Maybe the commercials with Tim Gunn freaking out helped. I'm sad that Irina but I guess she deserved it although I would have given the win to Carol Hannah first but that's just me (I like color). Oh well, a lackluster season BUT, previews! It looks like it back in New York! Yay, maybe now we can get Nina Garcia and Michael Kors in the same episode on a consistant basis again!
FlashForward has descended into massively disappointing territory. I've watched the first two episodes and I totally agree that the characters are not strong or interesting enough to carry this slow burn they had going on with the plot. Heroes did not have the best crafted, compelling, characters back in season one but they were still interesting and everything moved strongly and quickly and was interesting, FF is no Heroes cicca season one, not even close unfortunately. Grey's Anatomy seems to have taken a big hit from last week as has most other shows it seems. Private Practice slipped under 9 million and barely above a 3 in the demo, it needs to rebound although from what I heard, the episode centered on a bad actor/character.
Wow at Survivor. Who would have even though that a show in its what? 19th season...? would ever beat CSI:LV or the hottest sophomore show, The Mentalist in the demo? Wow, a true testament to the almighty power of Survivor. CSI doesn't seem to have benefited from the special crossover event. It's ratings are still decent but I wonder how long it can keep going on. Its syndicated on Spike but it not sure how well it repeats... (In sharp contrast, NCIS repeats very well for USA and I'm relatively sure that CSI: Miami does well for A&E) The Mentalist won its hour and had one of its best episodes this season. Great, heart-pounding, gut-wrenching, and a sliver of light is shone on the inner workings of Red John. Fantastic, like other shows with characters trying to solve a murder close to home (See: Monk) any episodes dealing with those issues are always the best episodes and this was no exception.
Still sad about Community and Parks and Recreations. Ratings... must... rebound and stabilize! They both had great episodes, Greene Daye! I wonder where the people flocking from FlashForward went... (Hint hint, nudge nudge, go the NBC!) In all seriousness, there's like a whole 2 in the demo that vanished and doesn't appear to have went anywhere. The Office still has that ratings magic but this episode was massively depressing in a way. Only TO can go from a hilarious recycling skit to bankruptcy. 30 Rock seems to have found its groove this season, the episodes are getting more consistently funny and less uneven. Good. Its a shame that ratings are not better because, imo, this is the best lineup quality wise, that NBC has trotted out in some time.
Bones still preforms admirably and had a great episode filled with quotable quotes ("They try and cuddle my cankles" and "You have balls!" (No I have ovaries) "Oh, you have a steel pair of ovaries!" This is all just paraphrasing). Fringe doesn't seem to be making any traction at all anymore. Shame, it looked like a good episode and I really wonder what is FOX going to do with it.
The Vampire Diaries took a hit just like everything else but still does better than what? 99% of the CW line up but they only care about the precise women demos. Supernatural's ratings aren't that great but I'm fine with it ending in season 5. A great episode, sad and everything. Damn you Eric Kripke! Spoiler Alert: I can't believe he killed off Ellen and Jo... also, I can't believe how sad and great they made that scene, Supernatural has a LONG history of bad women characters and usually even worse actresses but Samantha Ferris bucks that trend and Jo managed to be decent as well. So, only 5 being that the Colt can't kill... anyone else care to speculate with me? I got Lucifer/The Devil, God (Duh!),Michael (Makes sense right?) and Death that Lucifer just resurrected (Although, was that the Horseman instead?).

What's the diff? Same thing for Greys, CSI, SPN, or the two NBC comedies. Fringe did probably benefit last season from the limited commercial interruptions. They made watching 'live' more like a DVR experience.

Fine by me. I could walk my dog after The Office. But who says it wouldn't do worse than Fringe this time?
The game being played is 'get the ad revenues', which means you lose the game if a huge chunk of the audience is watching the show on DVR--at least until such a time as they find a way to make DVR-users watch a lot of ads. Good luck with that. But heavy DVR recording of a show, by the very nature of who is using DVRs, indicates an interested but somewhat detached viewership, that falls precisely within the demographic groups most prized by advertisers.
This is the quandary. They have these people hooked, but they can't reel them in--ie, get enough of them to watch 'live'. I think they'll look for ways to land this elusive catch in a third season of Fringe. And I doubt they'll succeed, unless the writing and overall plotting of the show greatly improves. And they have to stop promising things and not delivering--as we saw in this season's Nimoy-less premiere.
First, the NFL is willing to offer to ALL customers, but for a price. That is why Time Warner Cable has not added it. They want too much money per subscriber AND want it on a basic tier.
Second, these ratings are not that there is interest in a Thursday night game, but not for a Network that you have to pay $4-$10 for a sports tier to get it, and you ONLY watch the 8 games it has as the only programming you watch on the Network.
I had the NFL Network the whole time until last month and I only watched about 5 of the games each season. NEVER watched anything else. There really isn't anything else it has to offer. THat is another reason why TWC and other cable companies have not caved in to the NFL to pay its demanded $$$$ on a wide open tier.
