Gossip Girl didn't tank. I am quite sure the network wasn't expecting a massive increase in audience vs. prior episodes, so why pretend that they were?
I agree with your point. I think the only way Gossip Girl will ever gain momentum is if The CW finds an actual 'hit' which could potentialy brings in new viewers to watch other CW programs. Obviously, Gossip Girl can't do that because it's audience is limited. Let's face it, Gossip Girl is a flat out rehash (I don't care how it involves blogging, text messaging, latest technology etc.) it's still an agglomeration of every other teen drama, and the teen soap genre isn't the craze it used to be. When will the CW folks realize this?
Lucy ran for six seasons, and 180 episodes. The Honeymooners (not counting variety show sketches, which were rarely seen after they first aired) only ran 39 episodes. And yet we talk of those two shows in the same breath, in terms of influence. Those 39 episodes cast a long shadow. It takes 4.6 Lucy episodes to equal one Honeymooners episode. And The Honeymooners didn't need celebrity cameos.
Lucy was grand, but The Great One still rules. And awayyyyyyy we go!
Odd how all the Big Bang Theory fans were claiming a month or so back that their show could kick HIMYM's butt and that it was far superior...and that HIMYM was so bad in the ratings that it should be cancelled. Now, they are back to claiming that BBT 'deserves' the post 2&1/2Men slot or at the very least the 8:30 slot back.
Perhaps next time, people won't be so quick to claim that timeslot doesn't matter?

Week 30, Broadcasters Ranked on A18-49 (000's of 2+ Viewers) ================================= 1. FOX 3.2 (8,750) 2. NBC 2.4 (7,320) 3. CBS 2.3 (8,540) 3. ABC 2.3 (7,910) 5. UNI 1.5 (3,480) 6. THE CW 0.9 (2,290) 7. TEL 0.5 (1,160) 8. MNT 0.4 (1,010) 9. TF 0.3 (540)
On season-to-date in A18-49, it's still a tie for second between ABC and CBS with NBC just a tad behind in fourth:
Season-to-Date, Weeks 1-30, Broadcasters Ranked on A18-49 (000's of 2+ Viewers) ================================= 1. FOX 4.3 (11,300) 2. CBS 3.0 (10,460) 2. ABC 3.0 (9,140) 4. NBC 2.9 (8,330) 5. UNI 1.5 (3,540) 6. THE CW 1.0 (2,570) 7. MNT 0.4 (1,120) 7. TEL 0.4 (1,050) 9. TF 0.3 (660)
Suddenly youngish-skewing NBC? Uhhh... not suddenly. How long have you been looking at their numbers? They survive on youngish skewing. Their stregnth is certainly not in total viewers.

If you're going to be snooty with people because you think they watch trashy TV shows, you can't complain if people get snooty with you over the fact that you watch a trashy medium, which only exists to sell soap.
And I watch plenty of it--and I think it's all trash. But there's good trash and bad trash. And we'll never agree on which is which.
As someone who has worked in TV for longer than I care to think about, I second pisher's comment. I LOVE trashy television. It's what TV does best. And, frankly, it's why people watch. It's why serious programming (aka 'spinach TV') can't and won't succeed on Friday and Saturday night.
But one man's trash is another's garbage. And it's not for anyone to draw the line.
I absolutely lurve Gossip Girl. It's my crack. And I'm way out of the demo and a constant source of embarrassment to my college freshman daughter because of it. And most of my friends also love GG.
However, The CW made a huge mistake in pulling the remaining shows offline. That is not the way to encourage live viewing. They made a deal with the devil at the beginning of the season by trading analog dollars for digital pennies and now the devil is looking for his due. As usual, they're going about it all wrong. However, the marketing campaign--OMG/OMFG--didn't cost them all that much, relative to what they would have spent had there not been a strike and it paid off a thousand-fold in free PR from the controversy. In that, they were smart.

I agree with you on the time slot. I think CBS is ruining BBT with its time slot switch. I mean look at the ratings it got for 8 episodes at 8:30, and some of its repeat numbers for second and sometimes even THIRD repeats at 8:30 were better than this. I maintain a freshman show needs a lead in. Obviously, some HIMYM viewers are now tuning in at 8:30 instead of 8:00 and watching only HIMYM instead of both shows. HIMYM has had 3 years of audience building and BBT has had a half a season. It needs a lead in. I wish CBS would move BBT back before it is too late. As you say, the time slot matters. Look, I think BBT could be an 8:00 show some day, but it is just too early for it to lead off the night.

I'm not sure there strength is in young viewers either. Just wait and see what happens as we move through May. I have a difficult time imagining NBC not finishing fourth again for the ? years in a row.
