But if you're going to talk about which show is considered to be better, The Office does better in the ratings on a network that is currently not as popular, on a competitive night sandwiched, between a group of shows that get very mediocre to poor ratings. And going beyond ratings The Office has won many awards and has received much critical praise. If you like Big bang Theory more that's fine, but in terms of which is considered to be better The Office has Big Bang Theory beat in terms of audience, difficulty of its schedule, critics, awards, and how long it's been on the air.

It doesn't date. Ever. It's still more modern and alive than anything on the air today. Just four actors and most of it takes place on one threadbare set. Pretty much all husband/wife comedies (Home Improvement, Everybody Loves Raymond, King of Queens, ad infinitum) take their cues, and most of their best shtik from it. It's also an enormous influence on shows like Seinfeld--pretty much all urban sitcoms, or shows about people whose ambitions outstrip their abilities.

I watch sitcoms I once thought were funny and clever, and I still like them, but I can see how badly they hold up over time.
