Just a thought... perhaps ratings and quality don't always equal out... Hmmmmmm... Good quality shows can do well or can do poorly. Just like crappy shows. By the way, the general public does NOT know quality. Otherwise McDonalds would be out of business, Spider-Man 3 would have won the Oscar for Best Picture last year, and millions of people would be reading more instead of watching so much television. quote: Originally posted by Twins12: The CBS Monday night sitcoms kill the NBC Thursday night sitcoms in the ratings every week.
No. Actually they don't "kill" them. The only area they even impressively beat them is the total viewership. Demo numbers are actually close. And if you look at 18-34 who do you think "kills" who. quote: Originally posted by Twins12: The only one that is even competitive with its counterpart is The Office, and something tells me it will dip as well when Grey's Anatomy returns this week.
Something tells me that too. Something also tells me that if Heroes were airing right now, 2.5 men and Rules would NOT be getting near season high numbers.

Ya know, guys, there are those who'd say 100% of network television is now, and always WAS garbage. And compared to the very best world literature and theater (and yes, film) have to offer, they've got a point. If you're going to be snooty with people because you think they watch trashy TV shows, you can't complain if people get snooty with you over the fact that you watch a trashy medium, which only exists to sell soap. And I watch plenty of it--and I think it's all trash. But there's good trash and bad trash. And we'll never agree on which is which.

I think people are putting How I Met Your Mother and Big Bang Theory in the same category. But I believe there has been much discussion of which of those two shows are better. I know someone mentioned the single v. multiple camera thing but overall I believe this discussion is that Big bang Theory isn't that great, whether it's compared to The Office or How I Met Your Mother.
I like both The Office and How I Met Your Mother, but, for me at least, Big Bang Theory just isn't that good right now.
And the person who said Big bang Theory is better than The Office, you have to be reasonable about this. We all have our own personal tastes, and I don't think there's anything wrong with someone liking Big Bang Theory over The Office, or simply disliking The Office. But if you're going to talk about which show is considered to be better, The Office does better in the ratings on a network that is currently not as popular, on a competitive night sandwiched, between a group of shows that get very mediocre to poor ratings. And going beyond ratings The Office has won many awards and has received much critical praise. If you like Big bang Theory more that's fine, but in terms of which is considered to be better The Office has Big Bang Theory beat in terms of audience, difficulty of its schedule, critics, awards, and how long it's been on the air.

quote: Here we go again with what is a hit or not... but I never thought there would ever be a debate about the success of Friends.
It was a big ratings success, and for quite a good while, though obviously there have been bigger sitcoms. It didn't spawn a successful spinoff--however, its influence is great--and mainly pernicious. You want to know why comedies are less successful now? Because before Friends, the networks thought you could have a show about funny people, or a show about pretty skinny people. After Friends, they got addicted to the concept that you could have a show about funny pretty skinny people. ALL pretty all skinny--nobody who looked remotely normal. Friends is a show where only pretty, skinny, and sorta funny people exist. And they've been trying to clone it ever since, and the results have been mainly pretty horrendous. Because there's just not a lot of pretty skinny funny people out there. I mean, even Friends had to settle for Matt LeBlanc to fill out the cast. Two out of three ain't bad.

How in the world can you compare the stature of a show like The Office that has been on for 3 years ,I believe, as compared to a freshman show like BBT. I mean how many freshman sitcoms are leading off a night against competition like DWTS, Bones, DOND and GG. I mean if you don't like the show fine, but it still is doing a pretty good job as a rookie show leading off a night. I, personally, think CBS made a mistake by moving it to 8:00, because it was doing fine at 8:30, but give it some slack. This is a rookie show leading off a night in one of the most competitive time slots on TV.

Examples of Good Shows that get the xwiseguyx Seal of Approval. People who watch these should be praised for their good taste in TV: Boston Legal The Office 2 1/2 Men Moment of Truth Lost Paradise Hotel 2 Ghost Whisperer The Amazing Race And everybody's favorite - 30 Rock!!! Examples of Bad shows that are awful garbage and everyone who watches them should be made fun of for eternity: CSI Miami NCIS Caveman Extreme Home Makeover Scrubs Heroes America's Next Top Model The Game Aliens In America That should resolve any further debate. Thanks! xwiseguyx

"Making sense" once in a blue moon. Much like a broken clock gets it right occasionally.

I didn't do the original comparison, I saw prior posts saying Big Bang Theory is a better show then The Office. That lead to my post saying it's fine to like Big Bang Theory better than The Office, but as in terms as which is considered better, The Office is on all fronts.
As to how well Big Bang Theory is doing, I don't know if its current numbers are considered good or bad. For me personally, the show has become less entertaining, a little old/repetitive, and some of the characters are becoming a little whiny and annoying (I did like the first few episodes I watched but not the current ones very much). That's just my opinion though and doesn't mean the show is bad; however I do know that's its ratings have dropped a little and that could be a bad sign.

I know The Office gets better ratings, but BBT finishing second in the demo in a tough time slot is not too bad.

Or like a fan of a show wishfully predicting renewal for said show in spite of falling ratings, and then there's a strike?

They are all shows that had obsurd situations occur every episode due to miscommunication or attempted 'plotting' by the lead bumbler character. They all had situations that easily resolved themselves completely by the end of the half hour.
