“Give” did fall off from its first to its second half hour, going from a 5.5 to a 5.1 at 9:30 p.m., and slipping from 16.3 million total viewers to 14.8 million.

But the reality show, in which Winfrey gave participants money to help others, will rank among the top five new series debuts this season in adults 18-49 and total viewers.

So it looks like there was some slip in both viewers and demo, but not significant to be worrysome -- I'm sure a lot of people tuned in due to the hype, but I expect the numbers to stay around 15 million and 5.0 for future episodes as well.

Mmmm...I think you're being a bit too optimistic. I have a hard time seeing this show holding a FIVE in the demo next wek, let alone out in the future. 10-12m viewers and a low 4 is probably more realistic IMO.

And I think you're being too pessimistic -- there's no reason to expect such a dramatic drop-off, when the same lead-in, lead-out, and competition, will be around next week. In fact, I'm not even sure if DOND will be on NBC next week, so it could be even less competition.

How about a happy medium of 13-14?

It's very unlikely that it will maintain almost all of it's premiere audience like Chimera hopes (how many new shows don't drop after the premiere?). On the other hand, it would take at least a few weeks to drop 1/3 of the premiere audience (given similar lead-ins and competition).

I think that's very possible, but I still think this is one of those once a season shows that catch fire, so I expect to see minimal viewer losses. The demo numbers may drop a bit to the mid- 4 range though.

That could be a true assesment. I know there may have been more repeats for the Block (since New Years) than a normal season would have.

But, FOX is the Network with more fresh progrmming and more viewers to get the word out of when a new episode will air next

Why is the animation block's numbers down NOW (after New Years), with less competition, than it was going up against Sunday night Football?

It does not make sense.

Do people know they are new or do a lot of people just assume they are on repeats like all the other fall shows?

Aliens in America is a WHOLE lot funnier and higher quality that the new Adventures of Old Christine or Welcome to the Captain. If Aliens in America was on CBS Monday night, it would be getting viewership on par with Big Bang Theory. Instead, simply because it is on CW, peiople won't sample it.
I'll give you that id AiA was on CBS, it would be getting number on par with "Welcome to the Captain", not BBT.

But thats still a bad number.
and its still not THAT funny. Average at best.

I agree and the finals may still reflect that.

And Unhitched getting pushed into the 10pm hour couldn't have helped it, but that's definitely not a good start for that show.
The FOX animation shows are definitley not kind companionship for regular sitcoms.

Dexter's holding up week to week and remains an improvement on what Shark reruns would do, at least in the demo, but is not a long-term option for CBS.
Dexter seemed a bit sloppy this week. So much for him being 'smart' enough to only kill people that 'deserve it'. Only dumb luck stopped him from erring this week.

With the Million Dollar Mission over, NBC needs to slow down on Deal or No Deal.
So, what you really mean is that they need to queue up some more Law&Order repeats? Wink

I just confirmed that NBC has a L&O rerun opposite Oprah next week (not a new DOND like last night), so there will indeed be somewhat less competition.

Hey, on NBC it's a lot easier to suggest what NOT to do. Frowner But yeah, they are doing L&O followed by SVUs on Sunday till the end of March.

I say fast-track some 1 vs. 100, which has apparently survived yet another NBC attempt to unseat it, based on the most recent Amnesia numbers. Maybe they could give SciFi's Tin Man a tryout a couple Sundays from now? I don't think it'd do very much, but based on what it did on SciFi, I'd rather try that than open up a fourth night of L&O.

I wish NBC would cancel 1vs100 so another network can pick it up and treat it better. I could be a moderate hit on a higher-HUT night, and it does very well as it is on Fridays...

Not so much dumb luck as the writers being scared to death of showing him as anything other than a nice (if emotionally distant) young man who kills unpleasant people as a hobby.

They make him a lot cuddlier than he is in the books (I read the first one).

Interesting that the audience for Dexter is skewing so old--partly because its younger audience has already seen it--but perhaps more because after all, at the end of the day, it's just another formulaic procedural. They just jiggered with the formula a teensy bit.

Wasn't NBC going to bring in Monk and Psych as strike filler? What happend to that? They may not get great ratings as network reruns (though their originals get as many viewers as much of NBC's regular stuff), but it would be better than all-L&O-all-the-time.

Those don't start till the beginning of April, but maybe you're right that they should push them up. They have 16 eps of each from this season alone.

I agree and I wonder if it has to do with production costs. After all, they have an elaborate set and they have to do a ton of casting. There were very noticeable budget cuts from season 1 to the short run this year, which cut down on the casting (mob recurred every episode), but that's still a lot of parts to fill.

Since I think Dexter's season one high was 1.2 million viewers, unless the online viewing is astronomical, not that many young viewers have seen it already.

But there was way too much going on in one episode -- it was frustrating to follow. A better idea would have been to feature teams of two in each episode, with the winning teams in subsequent weeks returning to go head-to-head in a two-hour season-finale face-off.

Marc, I actually like this format, I just think that with so many players/team in the premiere, they should have expanded it to two-hours to give every team enough air time and not feel so "crammed."
Your recommendation would make the initial random pairing extremely crucial to who goes to the finale, and I don't think that would be best.

If Big Give continues its strong numbers, I fully expect that ABC will add a few more episodes to the next run, and probably make the season premiere 2-hrs. I'm pretty sure they'll find a way to make this season's finale 2-hrs, if ratings hold up. I envision this to be a twice a year (Fall/Spring) competition, ala DWTS.
