Friday 9/05/08:

-Total Viewers:
Fox: 7.57 million, ABC: 4.96, CW: 4.72, CBS: 3.32, NBC: 2.90

-Adults 18-49:
Fox: 2.0 rating/7 share, ABC and CW: 1.4/ 5 each, CBS: 0.9/ 3, NBC: 0.8/ 2

--------------------

Note: Any prior rating results are based on the final nationals. Since the level of DVR penetration has increased from 13 percent at this same point last year to approximately 23 percent at present, the overall results may be negatively impacted.

----------

-Friday’s Winners:
Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (Fox)

-Friday’s Losers (excluding repeats):
Fall Preview (CBS), NFL Kick-Off (NBC), Swingtown (CBS)

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
The two episode season-premiere of Fox’s Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? led Fox to Friday victory, with an average 7.57 million viewers and a 2.0 rating/7 share among adults 18-49 from 8-10 p.m. Given Fox’s former Friday night woes, this is a real positive for the network. Congrats, J.P.!

Friday was an unprecedented night of television, of course, with the Big 3 networks simultaneously airing 8-9 p.m. fund raiser Stand Up to Cancer. Here is the rating breakdown:

8 p.m./Stand Up to Cancer
ABC – Viewers: 3.81 million, A18-49: 0.9/ 3
NBC – Viewers: 3.32 million, A18-49: 0.8/ 3
CBS – Viewers: 3.16 million, A18-49: 0.7/ 3

Second behind Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? at 9 p.m. was the second half of Friday Night Smackdown! on the CW, with 4.86 million viewers and a 1.6/ 5 among adults 18-49. Overall, Friday Night Smackdown! averaged 4.72 million viewers and a 1.4/ 5 in the demo from 8-10 p.m.

ABC aired a repeat of America’s Funniest Home Videos at 9 p.m., which averaged 4.42 million viewers (#3) and a 1.3/ 4 among adults 18-49 (#3). That led into veteran 20/20, which won the 10 p.m. hour with 6.65 million viewers and a 2.0/ 6 among adults 18-49.

CBS programmed the 9-11 p.m. block with a half-hour Fall Preview (Viewers: #4, 3.38 million; A18-49: #4, 0.8/ 3), a repeat of The New Adventures of Old Christine (Viewers: #4, 2.98 million; A18-49: #4, 0.8/ 2), and the season (or series) finale of Swingtown (Viewers: #2, 3.62 million; A18-49: #2, 1.2/ 4). My guess this was the last we will ever see of Swingtown.

NBC capped off the two-hour block with a one-hour NFL Kick-Off special (Viewers: #5, 1.91 million; A18-49: #5, 0.7/ 2) and Dateline (Viewers: #3, 3.47 million; A18-49: #3, 0.9/ 3).

To keep you interested, here is what you will be seeing on Fridays beginning in September:

ABC
8:00 p.m. Wife Swap (new day and time)
9:00 p.m. Supernanny (new day)
10:00 p.m. 20/20

CBS
8:00 p.m. Ghost Whisperer
9:00 p.m. The Ex List (new)
10:00 p.m. Numb3rs

NBC
8:00 p.m. Crusoe (new)
9:00 p.m. America’s Toughest Jobs (new -- already aired twice on Monday)
10:00 p.m. Life (new day)

Fox
8:00 p.m. Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (new day)
9:00 p.m. Don’t Forget the Lyrics (new day)

CW
8:00 p.m. Everybody Hates Chris (new day)
8:30 p.m. The Game (new day and time)
9:00 p.m. America’s Next Top Model (R, new day)

FOX finally has a winner on Fridays with Are You Smarter Then A 5th Grader.

Stand Up to Cancer did not do well at all. The CBS Fall Preview had more viewers then SUTC did on CBS.

ABC got a nice bump in ratings with 20/20. 6 million this week? Not bad.

The CW Maintains Hold on to Third Place in A18-49 Demo After Five Nights of Week 50

Strong-out-of-the-gate The CW is still holding on to third place in A18-49 after five nights of Week 50, although it has fallen to fifth place in viewers...depending on how badly ABC and CBS do tonight and tomorrow, The CW may even hold on to third place even with their normal subpar Sunday numbers (which will be boosted a bit this week by the Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill and Americas Next Top Model encores).

Week 50, First 5 Nights (Sep.1-5/08)
A18-49 Rank. Network: A18-49 / Viewers
(first four nights are final results)
====================================
1. NBC: 2.68/ 8,702,000 (1st)
2. FOX: 2.56 / 7,100,000 (2nd)
3. The CW: 1.68 / 3,624,000 (5th)
4. CBS: 1.48 / 5,496,000 (3rd)
5. ABC: 1.24 / 4,032,000 (4th)
6. MNT: 0.40 / 1,283,000 (6th)

AYSTA5thG did very well for FOX. It doubled their typical Friday audience. If it keeps it up, FOX finally can contend on that night.

20/20 did well for ABC. If Wife Swap and Supernanny keep their ratings, they also will be a Friday contender.

Stand Up To Cancer had disappointing ratings. Splitting it among 3 channels really spread out the viewers.

CBS and NBC was dead from 9 to 11. This will definately be the end of Swingtown with those ratings. No way its coming back. Not surprised Christine did poorly as no one knew it was on at that time. Same with NFL Kickoff Preview on NBC.

FOX has solved their death slot issue. Now we have to see if CBS and ABC also succeed at this.

Survivor Gabon OutPick'em is now accepting players! Click the icon above or below for more details.

On a side note, the success of "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?" might be great for FOX, but is Howard Stern getting any royalties from it? If not, he should - he introduced this game on his radio show many years ago.

The title of this game back then...

"Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?" (no kidding)

Another thing why is ABC still puting out new episodes of Wipout. The summers over and its killing the ratings.

The only winner was 5th Grader - I think as the season went by, it'll do even better, but what it did tonight was great. And FOX didn't even have to spoil the surprise in their previews!

Too bad about Swingtown - it was, by far, the best episode yet, and it's too bad that it was the last. Molly Parker absolutely stole the show last night - I haven't seen a better performance from her than last night. On a brighter note, though, it was the highest rated show on CBS last night, if that even matters. Even if it isn't renewed, it was a great show, and I had a great summer watching it!

It almost isn't worth offering a Fall preview to the viewing audience if so few people are going to see it. CBS might have been better off putting a short (say 5 minute) preview together and airing it in theaters as a preview before the movie starts.

I second that! Swingtown will join last year's NBC offering, Raines as a greast show that never found an audience and therefore departed too soon.
