Prime-Time Ratings:
Wednesday 1/16/08

The following results are based on the fast affiliate ratings (Live Plus Same Day data)

-Total Viewers:
Fox: 30.28 million, NBC: 10.73, CBS: 9.68, ABC: 5.55, CW: 1.39

-Adults 18-49:
Fox: 12.6 rating/30 share, NBC: 3.0/ 7, ABC: 2.2/ 5, CBS: 2.0/ 5, CW: 0.6/ 1

----------

Note: Any prior rating results are based on the final nationals. Also, since the level of DVR penetration has increased from 9 percent in early 2006-07 to approximately 20 percent at present, the overall results may be negatively impacted.

----------

-Yesterday’s Winners:
American Idol (Fox), Deal or No Deal (NBC), Comanche Moon, part three (CBS), Law & Order (NBC)

-Yesterday’s Losers (Excluding Repeats):
Power of 10 (CBS), Wife Swap (ABC), Crowned: The Mother of All Pageants (CW), Cashmere Mafia (ABC)

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
Once again it was a robust victory for Fox care of American Idol, which averaged 30.28 million viewers and a 12.6 rating/30 share among adults 18-49 from 8-10 p.m. But compared to one year earlier (Viewers: 36.94 million; A18-49: 15.5 rating/36 share on Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007), that was a decline of 6.66 million viewers and 19 percent among adults 18-49. Keep this in mind as the season progresses. For my thoughts on the show itself, listen to today’s PIPodcast at www.marcberman.tv.
In the battle of the 8-9 p.m. game shows, it was no contest once again with NBC’s Deal or No Deal (Viewers: #2, 11.83 million; A18-49: #2, 3.1/ 8) outdelivering CBS’ Power of 10 (Viewers: #4, 4.92 million; A18-49: #4, 1.1/ 3) by a hefty 6.91 million viewers and 182 percent among adults 18-49. Every show in the 8 p.m. hour, in fact, was of a non-scripted nature. Take a look:

Wednesday 8 p.m.
American Idol (Fox) – Viewers: 30.28 million, A18-49: 15.5/36
Deal or No Deal (NBC) – Viewers: 11.83 million, A18-49: 3.1/ 8
Wife Swap (ABC) – Viewers: 5.19 million, A18-49: 1.9/ 5
Power of 10 (CBS) – Viewers: 4.92 million, A18-49: 1.1/ 3
Crowned: The Mother of all Pageants (CW) – Viewers: 1.64 million, A18-49: 0.7/ 2

Of the four competing programs, only Deal or No Deal could stand up to American Idol.

At 9 p.m., and opposite the second half of American Idol, the conclusion of CBS miniseries Comanche Moon scored a still healthy 12.06 million viewers and a 2.4/ 6 among adults 18-49 from 9-11 p.m. The next time someone tells you the miniseries form is dead, remind them of Comanche Moon.

Also airing from 9-10 p.m. was ABC’s Supernanny (Viewers: #4, 6.06 million; A18-49: #2, 2.5/ 5), NBC’s Law & Order: Criminal Intent (Viewers: #3, 8.80 million; A18-49: #3, 2.4/ 6), and a repeat of the CW’s Gossip Girl (Viewers: #5, 1.11 million; A18-49: #5, 0.5/ 1). Worth noting for Supernanny was growth of 32 percent among adults 18-49 out of Wife Swap.

NBC’s Law & Order won the 10 p.m. among adults 18-49 (3.7/10), with a second-place finish in total viewers (11.55 million). Last was ABC’s recently introduced Cashmere Mafia at 5.39 million viewers and a 2.2/ 6 among adults 18-49. Does the failure of Cashmere Mafia mean that ABC’s upcoming (and similar appeal) Lipstick Jungle is doomed?

Time to move this show away from this time period. It is not working going up against DOND and AI.

Yes, the Mini-series is still a viable format, but it must be of an interesting subject matter.

Perhaps a next mini-series project could be a sequal to the 80's Shogun minseries.

1.39 million viewers and a 0.6/ 1 demo rating for the CW. I wonder if MyTV out rated the CW last night?[/quote] It did have a good enough lineup to do so.

CBS needs to just pull Power of 10 and put random reruns.... Pretty much anything they have will repeat better than P10 is doing. Reruns of 60 Minutes would do better. If they are worried about too many crime reruns, maybe they could show reruns of CW shows like Supernatural or Smallville. They did that a couple of years ago with Veronica Mars...

Cashmere Mafia is making DSM's numbers look good.

On the other hand, NBC has to be pretty happy with their numbers for DOND and the L&O twins.

Perhaps ABC needs to use its Fridays and Saturdays to burn off Cashmere Mafia, Big Shots and October Road. Two episodes a week, one each night Wink

Yea, like that will happen.

I think CBS learned it lesson with VM and will not do it again.

They need to move Wife Swap and Supernanny back to Mondays, where they have always been successful. As long as they only get 5 million viewers, ABC might as well go back to its original Wed lineup of Pushing Daisies, Private Practice, and Dirty Sexy Money, and allow those reruns to perhaps gain some new viewers. No sense wasting precious new shows opposite the AI juggernaut.

Oh, I'm not holding my breath or anything, but they need to do something other than Power of 10. Has any new show performed this badly on CBS in the last several years?

Interesting phenomenon that Cashmere Mafia gets half the viewers of Comanche Moon and earns almost the same A18-49 demo. Last nights episode of Cashmere Mafia was pretty watchable, and the series has found its groove.

ABC's disastrous numbers in the metered markets turned out to be a not so bad third place in the demo, lifting ABC to a three-day average of 2.0 in A18-49, again not so disastrous given that four of the nine hours were up against the American Idol behemoth.

Big Brother is scheduled to take the slot in a few weeks.

Viva Laughlin (the Sunday airing) is about the last, really bad performing show I can think of, off hand.

I know The Will did so bad it was pulled after 1 airing, but X would know about that show more than I would.

The Will was more pulled also due to the quality of the show itself and the backlash from the critics in addition to the performance. (The performance was bad, but it also aired on a Sat night from what I recall.)
