-Ratings Breakdown: ABC was the most-watched network on this fourth Monday of the 2009-10 season thanks to the strength of Dancing With the Stars. But CBS finished first among adults 18-49 -- one-tenth of a rating point ahead of second-place Fox.
ABC’s Dancing With the Stars danced to total viewer victory from 8-10 p.m., with 16.46 million viewers and a 3.5 rating/9 share among adults 18-49. Here is the half-hour breakdown:
Dancing With the Stars (ABC) 8:00 p.m. – Viewers: 15.43 million (#1), A18-49: 3.0/ 8 (#3) 8:30 p.m. – Viewers: 16.77 million (#1), A18-49: 3.5/ 8 (#2) 9:00 p.m. – Viewers: 17.01 million (#1), A18-49: 3.7/ 9 (#2) 9:30 p.m. – Viewers: 16.62 million (#1), A18-49: 3.7/ 9 (#2)
Comparably, last night’s performance was down by 1.31 million viewers and 12 percent among adults 18-49 from one year earlier (Viewers: 17.77 million; A18-49: 4.0/10 from 8-9:30 p.m. on Oct. 13, 2008). As to who is going home tonight, the weakest links are clearly Michael Irvin and Louie Vito. My pick to bid adieu: Michael Irvin.
Dancing With the Stars led into sophomore crime solver Castle, which finished second with 9.99 million viewers and a 2.4/ 6 among adults 18-49 at 10 p.m. Comparably, retention out of the last half hour of Dancing was 60 percent in total viewers and 65 percent among adults 18-49. One year earlier, former occupant Boston Legal averaged a weaker 8.01 million viewers and a 2.1/ 5 in the demo (out of 11.45 million viewers and a 3.0/ 7 among adults 18-49 for lead-in Samantha Who?). The prognosis for Castle: it could be better, but is could also be worse and is worthy of a full season pick-up.
It was Monday business as usual for CBS, with its combination of How I Met Your Mother (Viewers: #3, 8.61 million; A18-49: #2, 3.5/ 9), recent on the fence arrival Accidentally on Purpose (Viewers: #3, 7.83 million; A18-49: #3, 3.0/ 7), Two and a Half Men (Viewers: #2, 13.89 million; A18-49: #1, 4.6/11), The Big Bang Theory (Viewers: #2, 12.78 million; A18-49: #1, 4.8/12) and veteran CSI: Miami (Viewers: #1, 12.94 million; A18-49: #1, 4.0/11). The Big Bang Theory remains an ample improvement over year-ago occupant Worst Week, which averaged 9.75 million viewers and a 3.2/ 7 in the demo on Oct. 13, 2008. But the 8-9 p.m. combination of How I Met Your Mother and Accidentally on Purpose declined, on average, by 1.07 million viewers and 12 percent among adults 18-49 from year-ago duo The Big Bang Theory (Viewers: 9.34 million; A18-49: 3.6/10 on Oct. 13, 2008) and How I Met Your Mother (Viewers: 9.25 million; A18-49: 3.9/10). As it stands, there is not a laugh to be found in Accidentally on Purpose.
Regarding Two and a Half Men, let’s hope Jon Cryer keeps his pants on next week! Was I the only one who ran for the remote at the end of the episode?
Next was Fox with its combination of House (Viewers: #2, 12.91 million; A18-49: #1, 5.0/13) and Lie to Me (Viewers: #3, 7.81 million; A18-49: #3, 2.8/ 7), which is keeping the time period temporarily occupied until 24 returns in January.
The news remains grim on NBC, meanwhile, with its losing combination of Heroes (Viewers: #4, 5.64 million; A18-49: #4, 2.4/ 6), which has no chance of surviving past this season, week three of medical dramas Trauma (Viewers: #4, 5.52 million; A18-49: #4, 1.8/ 4) and ongoing dud The Jay Leno Show (Viewers: #3, 4.91 million; A18-49: #3, 1.5/ 4). Take a look at Trauma’s three week track. While minor growth in week three is a positive, the overall performance is still dismal.
What NBC is going to do about Jay Leno is beyond me.
Last was The CW care of One Tree Hill (Viewers: 2.62 million; A18-49: 1.2/ 3) and Gossip Girl (Viewers: 2.51 million; A18-49: 1.2/ 3). While I understand that The CW’s target audience is young female demos, year-to-year erosion of 830,000 viewers and 29 percent among adults 18-49 from the two serials in reverse order (Gossip Girl – Viewers: 3.31 million; A18-49: 1.6/ 4 -- One Tree Hill – Viewers: 3.47 million; A18-49: 1.7/ 4 on Oct. 13, 2008) is concerning. After last week's ratings, I'm not saying a word about Castle until I see the finals. Except for this--let's see what happens when DWTS isn't there for Castle anymore. And Nathan Fillion owes Jay Leno a big bunch of roses.
So to put this in perspective for CBS: How I Met Your Mother down just .1 from BBT last year. Accidentally on Purpose down by .9. Analysis: HIMYM is just as strong of an 8pm show as BBT, while AOP is a goner despite actually being funny these past few weeks.
Nice to see Castle hold. It will probably drop to its typical 2.3 in the finals.
NBC's Trauma could use a new time slot and a lead in. Maybe Fridays at 9 after Law and Order?
Heroes needs to end this season. Jay Leno would do better if he wasn't airing behind these other 2 shows.
OTH and GG post better than typical numbers this week.
House remains solid despite dips and a heavily promoted episode. Lie to Me is Friday fare at midseason, probably with Past Life (I think Fringe will be back on Tuesdays after Idol).

What will happen is the Bachelor will be the lead in with higher demos and probably a higher rated Castle.
Unlike pisher, I shall show no restraint in celebration as I high-five and cartwheel about the ABC end-zone.

Thanks for continuing to post this. I think the way Marc is writing up that 8:00 hour is really silly.

I know that no one here will ever admit, but just remember CBS( and Marc) like those viewers totals. I know everyone thinks it is only demos, but not to CBS. They still market Two and a Half Men as the # 1 sitcom, while we all know that we have a new # 1 sitcom where it counts.

We'll agree to disagree on the viewer/demo thing but what I'm getting at is that he's continually lumping the two together as if to suggest that both HIMYM and AOP are bringing down the hour, when in reality HIMYM is virtually flat vs. the year-ago 8:00 show and AOP is the real dud.

I am pleased to see Castle holding steady. ABC would be fools to can it if it holds this audience. Steady at a moderate level is more than ABC can claim for a majority of their new shows over the past few years, so they should definitely hang onto Castle if it can keep this up.
Marc - I listen to and enjoy your podcast. I listened to today's and wanted to comment on your observations about "One Tree Hill."
The 5 main actors' contracts were up for re-negotiation at the beginning of this season (7). The 2 actors (Chad Murray and Hilarie Burton) were offered to return to the show, but the actors did not accept the offers.
The show made the decision to continue without those 2 actors and so far, I believe this was a good decision on the part of the network. OTH, though it is down from year-to-year, is currently outperforming (on average) Gossip Girl, 90210, and Melrose Place which all are younger shows with more buzz.
I believe that any audience erosion has more to do with the overall problems at the CW rather than the actual cast changes.
What NBC is going to do about Jay Leno is beyond me
I have no love for LENO as I blame this five night a week scenario responsible for the cancellation of SOUTHLAND before the 2nd season even aired! I hope the TNT reports are true!
Also I think LENO is another reason DAY ONE got downgraded...the whole experiment was a bad idea. Yeah we heard about the LENO show is a money saver but when it helps distabilize your entire line up how is that good?
I honestly believe that if NBC's woes continue it could eventually cease to be one of the BIG THREE and have the same standing as pedigree cable channels like USA, FX.
LIE TO ME is an under performer. 24 can't come back quick enough.
Marc your podcasts talking about enmy predictions for Cherry Jones refered to last season as a weaker season but from message boards I have read season 7 was UNIVERSALLY loved over the preceding season and a LOT of people loved the new character Renee.
