Prime-Time Ratings:
Tuesday 10/02/07

The following results are based on the fast affiliate ratings (Live Plus Same Day data)

-Total Viewers:
Fox: 12.58 million, CBS: 12.28, ABC: 11.87, NBC: 8.69, CW: 2.73

-Adults 18-49:
Fox: 5.0 rating/13 share, ABC: 3.6/ 9, NBC: 3.5/ 9, CBS: 3.1/ 8, CW: 1.3/ 3

----------

-Yesterday’s Winners:
NCIS (CBS), Dancing With the Stars (ABC), House (Fox), Law & Order: SVU (NBC)

-Disappointing Opening Levels:
Cavemen (ABC), Carpoolers (ABC)

-Yesterday’s Losers (excluding repeats)
The Singing Bee (NBC), Beauty and the Geek (CW)

----------

Note: Any prior rating results are based on the final nationals. Also, since the level of DVR penetration has increased from approximately percent during premiere week in 2006 to approximately 20 percent at present, the overall results are no doubt negatively impacted.

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
Fox won this second Tuesday of the 2007-08 season, with a first-place finish in both total viewers and adults 18-49. ABC and CBS tied for the No. 2 spots, with CBS second in total viewers (300,000 behind Fox) and ABC second among adults 18-49. Once again, the CW had very limited results.

Older skewing CBS warhorse NCIS won the 8 p.m. hour, with 16.26 million viewers and a 3.6 rating/10 share among adults 18-49. Second overall were two series debuts on ABC -- sitcoms Cavemen (Viewers: 8.98 million; A18-49: #1t, 3.3/10) and Carpoolers (Viewers: #2, 9.02 million; A18-49: #2, 3.4/ 9). Comparably, that trailed year-ago occupant Dancing With the Stars (Viewers: 17.49 million; A18-49: 4.5/13), on average, by a significant 8.50 million viewers and 27 percent in the demo. While no one expected these “comedies” to match Dancing With the Stars, given the hype, particularly for Cavemen, the initial sampling should have been higher. While I will remove both from the loser’s listing, consider these initial results disappointing.

Summer NBC favorite The Singing Bee moved into the 8 p.m. half-hour, with a lackluster (and fourth-place) 6.60 million viewers and a 2.3/ 7 among adults 18-49. That led into the 90-minute edition of The Biggest Loser at an also fourth-place 7.39 million viewers and a 3.3/ 8 from 8:30-10 p.m. Overall growth for The Biggest Loser out of The Singing Bee of 43 percent among adults 18-49 is worth positively noting.

Also in the 8 p.m. hour was Fox drama Bones (Viewers: #, 7.89 million; A18-49: #3, 2.9/ 8), and the CW’s limited Beauty and the Geek (Viewers: #5, 2.65 million; A18-49: #5, 1.3/ 4). Year-to-year, Beauty and the Geek declined from former occupant Gilmore Girls (Viewers: 4.62 million; A18-49: 1.9/ 6 on Oct. 3, 2006) by 1.97 million viewers and 32 percent in the demo. And Gilmore Girls was already declining last year at this time.

Fox mega-hit House led the 9 p.m. hour, with 17.28 million viewers and a 7.1/17 among adults 18-49. Second was ABC’s Dancing With the Stars, with a rock-solid 15.73 million viewers and a 4.3/10 in the demo. How about Albert Reed leaving last night? What a shocker!

Also in the 9 p.m. hour was CBS’ male-driven The Unit (Viewers: #3, 11.34 million; A18-49: #4, 3.2/ 8), and week two of CW drama Reaper (Viewers: #5, 2.81 million; A18-49: #5, 1.3/ 3). One week earlier, Reaper kicked-off with 3.28 million viewers and a 1.5/ 4 in the demo, while former occupant Veronica Mars scored a similar 3.36 million viewers and a 1.4/ 4 among adults 18-49 on the year-ago evening (out of a considerably stronger Gilmore Girls). Growth for Reaper out of Beauty and the Geek of 160,000 viewers could still make it a potentially promising option.

First at 10 p.m. was NBC’s veteran Law & Order: SVU, with 11.66 million viewers and a 4.5/12 among adults 18-49. Second was ABC’s Boston Legal (Viewers: 10.94 million; A18-49: 3.1/ 8), followed by week two of CBS drama Cane at 9.24 million viewers and a 2.5/ 7 in the demo. Comparatively, Cane dipped by 1.97 million viewers and 17 percent among adults 18-49 from it’s week-ago debut (Viewers: 11.21 million; A18-49: 3.0/ 8 on Sept. 25). Year-ago failed year-ago occupant Smith averaged 8.38 million viewers and a 2.8/ 8 on Oct. 3, 2006. Since nine out of 10 new shows decline in week two, let’s wait and see what happens with Cane in week three before we pass any judgment.

Sigh. Reaper...

I guess it's not as bad as Gossip Girl's second outing.

Boston Legal beating Cane is the worst moment of the season so far for me.

I expected Cavemen to do better. Even at a higher HUT level, I'm surprised Carpoolers grew from Cavemen.

I'm actually happy to see CANE dropping...I hope the fall off continues in the coming weeks because I'm really hoping to see any and all of these three waiting in the wings series:

SWINGTOWN
THE AMAZING RACE
JERICHO

Wait a minute...I just noticed BONES is pulling near PRISON BREAK numbers so why is everyone so down on PRISON BREAK and making out like BONES is a huge hit?

Also I am hoping for the failure of PUSHING DAISY's tonight for two reasons.

1. I want KID NATION to do better to stay on the air.

2. Tired of critics hyping how great a show it is.

Well, I do enjoy both shows, but Cane is my favorite new show of the season. Unfortunately, the numbers aren't very good.

I have a feeling that Cavemen and Carpoolers could lose a large chunck of their audience next week. Those shows were absolutely terrible, especially with the hype for Cavemen.

Well, for the Reaper, the growth is okay, but shouldn't the ratings and demos grown in its second week and not have declined? Not a good start for the CW.

Peace!!

It might be time for NBC to cancel Singing Bee. Bees don't have long lifespans and this one seems to have caught a virus.

Reaper still grew a bit out of B&tG. that is a good sign. It is a real shame that CW has to air gems like this out of horrible lead-ins like B&tG.

I agree with you, Marc, in that Cane is not dead already. That decline is not of the K-Ville nature just yet.

is that a typo for NCIS? 16.26 million? Wouldn't that be a record audience for that show?

Some viewers probably tuned into part of "Carpoolers" in advance of "Dancing With the Stars."

Boston Legal really improved in terms of the DEMO from last week. I guess that half hour where it started earlier really hurt it, so this was a positive week. Good stuff!
