I think it was a move done mostly to ensure the leadership stays in place long enough for Supernatural to reach syndication. This definitely has the feel of a plan for 100+ episodes.
You may very well be right, obveeus. Warner doesn't want Supernatural to end up like Gilmore Girls (the last season of which SUCKED) due to change of producers. There's too much money to be earned if they have 100 plus quality episodes to syndicate. Better show, more syndication opportunities.
