Prime-Time Ratings:
Monday 6/23/08

-Total Viewers:
CBS: 7.21 million, Fox: 6.89, ABC: 6.38, NBC: 5.71, CW: 1.11

-Adults 18-49:
ABC and CBS: 2.2 rating/7 share each, Fox: 2.1/ 6, NBC: 1.8/ 5, CW: 0.5/ 2

----------

-Yesterday’s Winners:
The Bachelorette (ABC), Two and a Half Men R (CBS), CSI: Miami R (CBS)

-Better Than USA, but Still Disappointing:
Nashville Star (NBC)

-Yesterday’s Losers (Excluding Repeats):
American Gladiators (NBC), The Mole (ABC)

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS was the most-watched network on this first official Monday of the summer season, while ABC and CBS tied for first among adults 18-49 -- one tenth of a rating point ahead of Fox. CBS aired a night of all repeats -- The Big Bang Theory (Viewers: #3, 5.46 million; A18-49: #2t, 1.7 rating/6 share), How I Met Your Mother (Viewers: #3, 5.54 million; A18-49: #3, 2.0/ 6), Two and a Half Men (Viewers: #1, 9.04 million; A18-49: #1, 3.0/ 9), Rules of Engagement (Viewers: #3, 6.09 million; A18-49: #3, 2.4/ 7) and CSI: Miami (Viewers: #1, 8.17 million; A18-49: #1, 2.2/ 6).

ABC began with a two-hour edition of corny The Bachelorette, which averaged a very respectable 7.52 million viewers and a 2.5/ 8 among adults 18-49 from 8-10 p.m., building in every half hour as follows:

The Bachelorette (ABC)
8:00 p.m. Viewers: 6.81 million (#1), A18-49: 2.1/ 7 (#1)
8:30 p.m. Viewers: 7.23 million (#1), A18-49: 2.4/ 7 (#1)
9:00 p.m. Viewers: 7.75 million (#2), A18-49: 2.7/ 8 (#2)
9:30 p.m. Viewers: 8.28 million (#1), A18-49: 2.9/ 8 (#1)

The Bachelorette led into lowly The Mole, which finished third with a mere 4.11 million viewers and a 1.6/ 5 among adults 18-49 at 10 p.m. Does anyone even know that The Mole is back?

Fox ran encore telecasts of Bones (Viewers: #2, 6.40 million; A18-49: #3, 1.8/ 6), which does not get the credit it deserves, and House (Viewers: #3, 7.38 million; A18-49: #3, 2.4/ 7).

NBC had little of note on this typical non-traditional season Monday with its combination of American Gladiators (Viewers: #4, 4.91 million; A18-49: #4, 1.7/ 6 at 8 p.m.), which needs to officially conclude, and a two-hour edition of Nashville Star at 6.11 million viewers and a 1.9/ 6 from 9-11 p.m. While just over 6-million viewers is nothing to boast about, even a marginal performance on NBC is better that what Nashville Star used to do on USA.

And last, and very least, were repeats of the CW’s Gossip Girl (Viewers: 1.16 million; A18-49: 0.5/ 2) and One Tree Hill (Viewers: 1.07 million; A18-49: 0.5/ 1). The sad reality of serialized dramas is they don’t play well in repeats. But putting my research hat on, I expect Gossip Girl to build momentum in season two…and beyond.

To whet your appetite for this fall, here is the new Monday schedule beginning in September (with new shows in caps):

ABC
8:00 p.m. Dancing With the Stars
9:30 p.m. Samantha Who?
10:00 p.m. Boston Legal (new day, final season)

CBS
8:00 p.m. The Big Bang Theory
8:30 p.m. How I Met Your Mother
9:00 p.m. Two and a Half Men
9:30 p.m. WORST WEEK
10:00 p.m. CSI: Miami

NBC
8:00 p.m. Chuck
9:00 p.m. Heroes
10:00 p.m. MY OWN WORST ENEMY

Fox
8:00 p.m. Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (new time)
9:00 p.m. Prison Break (new time)

CW
8:00 p.m. Gossip Girl
9:00 p.m. One Tree Hill

ABC really needed a summer series, and I think The Bachelorette is it. The Mole is just done, unfortunately.

Agreed on Gossip Girl Marc. I also think Big Bang Theory may grow. Nashville Star deserves some credit for growing out of its lead in. The Bachelorette as expected is starting to grow back up. Rules of Engagement was a major weak link last night.

If they aired one Bachelor during the regular season and one Bachelorette during the summer they could probably eliminate the overkill altogether the keep the show going for even longer.

I agree -- I think a winter-season Bachelor (scheduled for Jan/Feb as a midseason replacement) and a summer Bachelorette in June/July each year would be a good rotation. But definitely cut back on the in-season amount to just one, as opposed to two Bachelors that has been the case the last few years...

Interesting how Rules of Engagement lost about 3 million viewers from Two and a Half Men. That is is biggest drop in quite some time.

I know the reason The Mole is doing so bad.

1. Americans don't watch as much tv in the summer.
2. It's at 10pm.
3. It's too hard for the average American to follow.

Actually if GA's repeats pull 3.5 million, above 1 million for GG and OTH looks fantastic. As for GG growing i agree. Instead of being a huge distaster it might become a minor disaster next year

Sorry Marc, but I'm confused on what is "disappointing" on Nashville Star. It is getting an increase of over one million viewers from American Gladiators, increasing in the demos, better each week than the numbers for USA, not declining each week but holding steady, and single handedly attempting to keep NBC in the Monday game. Overall, the numbers are decent.

The Bachlorette is still going strong. Anyone who doubted its placement on the schedule just has to look at those numbers. The Mole is dragging down the schedule. Time to get rid of it.

ABC's two shows tonight (WIPEOUT & I Survived a Japanese Game Show) look really good and may break the bad streak the net has had.

You dare say that right after claiming that ABC's Wipeout and I Survived a Japanese Gameshow look really good?

All three of these fall into the category of: why I don't watch much summer TV.
