-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS was the most-watched network on this first official Monday of the summer season, while ABC and CBS tied for first among adults 18-49 -- one tenth of a rating point ahead of Fox. CBS aired a night of all repeats -- The Big Bang Theory (Viewers: #3, 5.46 million; A18-49: #2t, 1.7 rating/6 share), How I Met Your Mother (Viewers: #3, 5.54 million; A18-49: #3, 2.0/ 6), Two and a Half Men (Viewers: #1, 9.04 million; A18-49: #1, 3.0/ 9), Rules of Engagement (Viewers: #3, 6.09 million; A18-49: #3, 2.4/ 7) and CSI: Miami (Viewers: #1, 8.17 million; A18-49: #1, 2.2/ 6).
ABC began with a two-hour edition of corny The Bachelorette, which averaged a very respectable 7.52 million viewers and a 2.5/ 8 among adults 18-49 from 8-10 p.m., building in every half hour as follows:
The Bachelorette (ABC)
8:00 p.m. Viewers: 6.81 million (#1), A18-49: 2.1/ 7 (#1)
8:30 p.m. Viewers: 7.23 million (#1), A18-49: 2.4/ 7 (#1)
9:00 p.m. Viewers: 7.75 million (#2), A18-49: 2.7/ 8 (#2)
9:30 p.m. Viewers: 8.28 million (#1), A18-49: 2.9/ 8 (#1)
The Bachelorette led into lowly The Mole, which finished third with a mere 4.11 million viewers and a 1.6/ 5 among adults 18-49 at 10 p.m. Does anyone even know that The Mole is back?
Fox ran encore telecasts of Bones (Viewers: #2, 6.40 million; A18-49: #3, 1.8/ 6), which does not get the credit it deserves, and House (Viewers: #3, 7.38 million; A18-49: #3, 2.4/ 7).
NBC had little of note on this typical non-traditional season Monday with its combination of American Gladiators (Viewers: #4, 4.91 million; A18-49: #4, 1.7/ 6 at 8 p.m.), which needs to officially conclude, and a two-hour edition of Nashville Star at 6.11 million viewers and a 1.9/ 6 from 9-11 p.m. While just over 6-million viewers is nothing to boast about, even a marginal performance on NBC is better that what Nashville Star used to do on USA.
And last, and very least, were repeats of the CW’s Gossip Girl (Viewers: 1.16 million; A18-49: 0.5/ 2) and One Tree Hill (Viewers: 1.07 million; A18-49: 0.5/ 1). The sad reality of serialized dramas is they don’t play well in repeats. But putting my research hat on, I expect Gossip Girl to build momentum in season two…and beyond.
