You were half right.
Obviously more people disagree than agree with the statement you just made as Greys pulls in twice the audience of ER on average and close to 3x the demo.
Current ratings are not actually relevant to the subject.
Since you were just comparing Lost (season 4, no competition) to CSI (season 8, tough competition), it seems a bit odd for you to say that someone can't compare Lost and Heroes.
I'm talking about quality.
if you are speaking of quality then "lost" is behind a slew of shows...as its quality isnt there...

I think some of the decrease can be attributed to March Madness... nothing CBS has put up against Lost has gotten over a 3.0 in the demo the last several weeks, and basketball got a 3.8 last night.
I think most of it however, is due to the fact that there is a core audience to the show (a heavily DVR'ing core audience, to boot), and this smaller core audience is going to stick with it through the end. You're going to get an uptick for the season premieres and season finales as outsiders tune in to see what the hubbub is about... but then by mid-season it will eventually settle into these types of numbers.
I think the same type of phenomenon, buzz-wize can be attributed to The Office, which has never been able to break-out to consistently above 10 million viewers, but has nice demos.
What is perplexing to me... all my co-workers, immediate family, friends and neighbors watch (or tape) both shows faithfully... yet I don't know a single one of them that are among the 14 - 18 million that watch NCIS or Criminal Minds (to name a few....)
i love how some fans make excuses for "their" shows and critisize other big show b/c they don't know anyone who watches them... b/c Lord knows you are the most important person on the planet and the universe revolves around you and your friends

True Mushu. I think they have what...five or six hours or so they need to fill for next season. Maybe putting reality shows on Friday night and as you mentioned, fixing Sunday nights could be what they try to do.
Peace!!

Unless they are going to launch at least 4 or 5 new hours worth of stuff, the CW will have to renew it. They not only are dying on Sundays, but they're going to have 2 difficult hours to fill on Fridays. If I were them, I would try to fix Sundays and sacrifice Fridays.
If Reaper survives past May (and I think it is a toss up right now), I see CW dumping it on Fridays as its not a project that the heads of CW favors. CW plays favorites more than any other main network.
Is it just me or CW is trying to widen its target audience next season?
I think they are, but not the the extent you think. They are adding in a bunch of 20something shows to go with the high school fare. So although it says medical drama, I still think the main characters are going to be in the 22-28 range and the issues are going to be those of the younger generation. Really it is like Grey's meets 24.

Lipstick Jungle's ratings aren't particularly good, but I could see it having better audience retention out of a compatible show then The Apprentice (even though it's having solid retention out of TA).

Regarding Smallville's numbers, everyone needs to keep in mind that it is spring break now, and CW is a teen driven network, and most teens are not home during primetime when it's spring break. The numbers are always a bit lower during spring break.

Making excuses? wuh? I was making an observation. My "friends" include co-workers I rarely see after work, neighbors many of whom have different interests than myself and extended family members from age 18 - 75 spread out over the continental U.S., Japan and Italy. Nearly all of them watch 'Lost' and 'The Office', and discuss it when I'm with them. They could be watching 'NCIS' and 'Criminal Minds', but if so - they are not bringing them up in casual conversation.
Did I diss NCIS and Criminal Minds in my post? I mentioned nothing about their quality. They are obviously popular shows, because more bodies watch them than the other shows I mentioned.
I was merely making an observation that sometimes the most buzzed-about, discussed shows aren't necessarily the most-watched, for one reason or another. I wasn't making excuses. I wouldn't consider the ratings of The Office or Lost as shows I would need to make excuses for, as I'm sure any network would be thrilled to have either show on their schedule.

it was an observation on your behalf but you are just one person...their are millions of viewers...just b/c you don't know any of them does not mean they don't exist...i am not a fan of ncis, but you cannot deny the fact that the show has a lot of fans...
oh and by the way, no one in my office talks about lost...heroes yes, dwts yes, csi and survivor yes...but not lost.
but that doesnt mean ppl don't watch.

Not sure where you get that they don't like Reaper. They have done everything to keep it around, including pulling it from endless repeats over the winter. As such I really think that if it continues to improve in this timeslot, or even do as well as Supernatural, you have seen exactly where it will go next year.
My only question is if it continues to improve will they leave it there even after they had planned on bringing back Supernatural, to allow it to build on its momentum.

Oh really? And you have determined this how? Have you watched every episode of the show and can personally state that the quality has decreased?
Determining the quality of a show is certainly subjective in nature, but I can list several television critics that have proclaimed that 'Lost' is currently their favorite show airing on television right now, and that the recent string of episodes are among the strongest of the series.
So what are the "slew of shows" that Lost is behind in quality?
I too am disheartened that Lost is dipping so low. I have a bad feeling once it goes at 10pm, that it will dip below 10 million. I am not one to make excuses of the week, like this week it is March Madness, etc. Because all of these excuses don't hold much water. The fact is Lost is a very intensive show and unless you are a rabid fan (like me), it will continue to bleed viewers until a certain base is reached. Hopefully this is greater than 10 million, but who knows. The demo has also been falling. I do think a lot of people are giving up on the show and the DVR does not make up for the lost numbers. The important thing for us fans is that hopefully no matter what happens ABC will make the commitment to finish off the series. EVen if Armageddon happens and we go to 7 or 8 million, there will be too much fan support to not let it go to fruition. It does make me think however that we should have finished in 5 seasons and not 6. In retrospect though, with the strike it wouldn't have worked that way. Still a big fan, and I think the creativity is as strong as it was the first season. It is no longer the water cooler show and is back to being more of a "cult" show, which is from what I understand what the producers invisioned the show to be in the first place.
