Fox landed in the midweek winner’s circle, courtesy of The Sugar Bowl, LSU vs. Notre Dame, at 14.04 million viewers and a 4.9 rating/13 share among adults 18-49 for the prime time portion of the game. Keep in mind, of course, that fast national results for any live sporting event are always approximate.
ABC kicked-off its Wednesday 8-10 p.m. comedy block with the following disappointing results.
8:00 p.m. According To Jim (season premiere) – Viewers: 7.35 million (#3), A18-49: 2.5/ 7 (#3)
8:30 p.m. According to Jim – Viewers: 7.20 million (#2), A18-49: 2.7/ 7 (#3)
9:00 p.m. The Knights of Prosperity – Viewers: 7.18 million (#4), A18-49: 3.0/ 7 (#4)
9:30 p.m. In Case of Emergency – Viewers: 6.29 million (#4), A18-49: 2.7/ 7 (#4)
Since ABC aired The Rose Bowl on the year-ago evening, there is no valid basis for a year-to-year comparison. But considering that CBS was in repeats from 8:30 p.m. and beyond, these numbers are nothing to boast about. Although growth for The Knights of Prosperity out of According to Jim of 11 percent among adults 18-49 is worth positively noting, the novelty will quickly wear off now that Mick Jagger is no longer on the series. Trust me – you’ll see. As for Jim Belushi and company: start packing!
ABC capped off the evening with Primetime: Basic Instincts at a distant last-place 5.03 million viewers and a 2.1/ 6 among adults 18-49. Not a good night by any means for ABC.
Despite 83 percent of its line-up in repeats, CBS fared considerably better than ABC. The King of Queens, the only original occupant, opened with 8.62 million viewers (#2) and a 2.9/ 8 among adults 18-49 (#2), followed by repeats of Two and a Half Men (Viewers: #2, 8.48 million; A18-49: #2, 2.8/ 7), Criminal Minds (Viewers: #2, 11.94 million; A18-49: #2t, 3.5/ 9) and CSI: NY (Viewers: #2, 10.41 million; A18-49: #2, 3.2/ 8). To the posters at pifeedback.com complaining that Two and a Half Men has become raunchy, you know what, I don’t disagree!
The first original episode of NBC’s Friday Night Lights in its new Wednesday 8 p.m. time period disappointed, with a mere (and fourth-place) 6.27 million viewers and a 2.3/ 6 among adults 18-49. Deal or No Deal moved into the Wednesday 9 p.m. hour with a solid 11.35 million viewers and a 3.5/ 9 in the demo (5.08 million more viewers than lead-in Friday Night Lights), followed by Medium at 9.33 million viewers (#3) and a second-place 3.3/ 8 among adults 18-49. Personally, I still think Medium would benefit if NBC moved it back to Monday at 10 p.m.
Over at the CW, the two-hour season-premiere of Beauty and the Geek kept the time period warm at a very solid 4.90 million viewers and a 2.2/ 6 among adults 18-49 from 8-10 p.m.. The half-hour breakdown is as follows:
Beauty and the Geek:
8:00 p.m. Viewers: 4.08 million, A18-49: 1.8/ 5
8:30 p.m. Viewers: 4.94 million, A18-49: 2.2/ 6
9:00 p.m. Viewers: 5.36 million, A18-49: 2.5/ 6
9:30 p.m. Viewers: 5.23 million, A18-49: 2.4/ 6
Comparatively, this was on par with Beauty and the Geek’s second-season opener on the WB on Thursday, Jan. 12 at 9 p.m.
