Saturday 1/06/07

The following results are based on the fast national ratings (Live Plus Same Day data)

-Total Viewers:
NBC: 22.73 million, CBS: 7.86, Fox: 6.54, ABC: 3.47

-Adults 18-49:
NBC: 8.4 rating/23 share, Fox: 2.4/ 7, CBS: 1.9/ 5, ABC: 1.0/ 3

----------

-Saturday’s Winners:
NFC Wild Card: New York at Philadelphia (NBC)

-Saturday’s Losers (excluding repeats):
ABC and CBS for not programming aggressively.

-Ratings Breakdown:
In a landslide Saturday victory, The NFC Wild Card: New York Giants vs. Philadelphia Eagles on NBC roared to the winning finish line with a whopping 22.73 million viewers and an 8.4 rating/23 share for the prime time portion of the game from 8-11 p.m. Comparably, that beat the competing programming on ABC, CBS and Fox combined. The success of the Wild Card match-up proves a point I have been trying to make for years: there is an available audience on Saturday with the right programming options.

Despite the NFC Wild Card onslaught, Fox’s perennial combination of Cops (Viewers: #3, 6.25 million; A18-49: #2, 2.3/ 7) and America’s Most Wanted (Viewers: #3, 6.83 million; A18-49: #2, 2.5/ 7) finished at regular season levels. Ditto for CBS’ combination of a repeat of Cold Case (Viewers: #2, 6.59 million; A18-49: #3, 1.6/ 5), a repeat of Without a Trace (Viewers: #2, 8.23 million; A18-49: #3, 1.8/ 5), and veteran 48 Hours Mystery (Viewers: #2, 8.77 million; A18-49: #2, 2.2/ 6).

In the distant last-place spot were three repeat episodes of ABC’s Desperate Housewives at just 3.47 million viewers with a 1.0/ 3 among adults 18-49 from 8-11 p.m. Unfortunately, this new breed of comedy does not repeat well, which is an upcoming problem, no doubt, for off-network syndication.

Just a minor error, the game was Dallas at Seattle, not Giants-Philly. And as a Dallas fan, it was heartbreaking to watch.

The non-aggressive CBS programming still beat FOX.

Can't say that saddens me, as a Steelers' fan. However, maybe if the Cowboys keep Tony Romo away from hot blondes (i.e. J Simpson, C Underwood) things might turn out better. Wink Smiler (Just as the Steelers need to keep Big Ben away from motorcycles).

Marc, I'm just not how many other types of programming can duplicate those numbers on a Saturday night. Even NBC would probably rather have those wildcard games on another night - but that is the NFL schedule.

NOTE TO PARTICIPANTS WHO ALREADY SUBMITTED ROSTERS FOR GAME #7: The NFL Playoff TV schedule for next weekend has been updated, as of the time of this post, at the roster grid. The AFC matchups, the NFC home teams, and the gametimes are definite but the NFC road teams are still to be determined because the Giants-Eagles game is still in progress as I'm writing this message.

We currently have 19 active participants in Game #7. The record number of participants for any game is 27 (for Game #4).

I know I'm tooting my horn here so forgive me but I was the only one to pick the Dallas-Seattle matchup as an entry for Game #6 in the P.I. Feedback Challenge. What a classic ending to that game!

I believe the final numbers for this game may go up, which would benefit myself. I'm surprised no one else got to pick this gem considering that any game with the Dallas Cowboys is usually a ratings winner (e.g. the Xmas PHI-DAL was a blowout and it scored record Xmas day ratings!)

I could think of one show now that might equal the ratings for the Saturday NFL Playoff Game, and I seem to be the only one in this forum championing this scheduling move:

ABC's Dancing with the Stars on Fridays and Saturdays!

If DWTS ever gets an 8.4 in the demo on a Sat night, I will run naked through my neighborhood while singing, "I'm a little teapot." Wink

Those numbers don't have to be duplicated. But it proves that viewers will watch broadcast television on Saturday.

agreed; abc would clean up. The problem is that they need DWS earlier in the week as well. DWS does skew older (right?) so Friday/Saturday may be the right way to go.

They would have ample opportunity to promote it to their large Thursday night audience.

As long as they don't use DWS as a lead-in for The All-New Show Me the Money...
