On CBS shows on CW. 1. Budget, CW absolutely isn't budgeted for shows that would cost as much as most CBS shows do to produce.
2. Loss of market percentage and ad revenue would certainly cut 30% right off the top for viewer levels.
Though CBS did have one show that underperformed that I thought demo wise would fit like a glove on the CW and that was Kid Nation (even if I had absolutely no interest in it).
While I dislike Idol, my bigest problem with it is pacing. Especially on results episodes where it really feels like they stretch what should easily fit in 10 minutes to an hour or half hour and that to me is a tangible production flaw for the programming. I certainly understand that people find all different things entertaining. In teh reality field I love Amazing Race (and I know some go WTF). But on the production, I never feel that they are padding the episodes, in fact, I always feel that they are having to edit a lot out (which is true).
Originally posted by galveston: I agree that the CW is toast. It hasn't developed one sucessful show of its own. Not one. Even Top Model is starting to falter. Smallville is having its usual spring falter to down in the 3 millions. You can't bleed money like that and survive.
It doesn't matter. If the network survives 2 more seasons so Supernatural can have a fourth and fifth season, I'm good. It's welcome to die after that. It won't be missed.
My friend I am worried as all hell that we might only get one, with numbers across the board this low.
And hell I am already pissed we are losing 6 episodes this year.
The CW, to survive, may need to reinvent itself. This 13-21 demo programming is, for the most part, not working at all.
Let the CW become more like USA or TNT or even TBS (go all comedy).
As I said recently (quite possibly not knowing what I'm talking about), the tanking economy is going to create a small window of opportunity for CW to go for people who have developed a taste for edgy cable programming, but don't want to shell out for cable anymore. There's a limit to how edgy a broadcast network can get, obviously--and clearly CW has no chance of taking HBO's audience. But they could go for USA's, TNT's, FX's, definitely. It's a long shot, but not out of the question. One complicating factor is the changeover to HD in a year's time, which will not affect people who have cable--and thus discourage people from getting rid of cable. Like I said, a very small window of opportunity.
But whatever avenue they want to try, the first order of the day is replacing the network head who led them to this dismal prospect. Ostroff has to go.
Do my eyes deceive me or has Pisher made a comment that I really agree with? Interesting insight there Pisher. They do need more edgy programming on the network and as you mentioned, it really might help the CW out. And yes, Ostroff needs to go.

If you ask me, that's even more racist if both black people are together.

Why doesn't some of CBS' loser shows move to the CW? THey would be huge winners by CW standards. Like give HIMYM, Rules of Engagement, Close to Home (which should not have been canceled), and the Unit to CW to help build their network rather than cancel them. I don't understand why they do not have better programming if they come from CBS. Give them a CSI too, like CSI: Chicago. The group of us here could fix the CW in a week!
Simple economics is why. CBS had $2.45 billion in upfront ad sales this season while the CW had $640 million. How can you expect the CW to support CBS level programming budgets when they bring in a fourth of the money?
Originally posted by Chimera: I don't get it either -- I've never really been into it, but this season I tuned in to see if I'm missing something, but like you guys, I just don't get it. And more than Simon's criticism, these days I absolutely can't stand Paula Abdul's non-sensical babble. I actually mute her parts now, because I could not even bare to listen after a while. She's a mess.
This season is the most lucid she's been in years. A few years back, she did one live show looking like a suicidal clown. Several where I believe she stuffed an assortment of Vicodin, Percocet, Xanax, Viagra, coke and meth right into her piehole before she got on stage.
I can understand why the ratings are lower now that the docs seem to have lowered her dosage(s). The Paula trainwreck factor is gone. Bring on the painkillers!
I think their point was more along the lines of that they never cast more than one black person at a time on each season and this time they could have had a golden opportunity (regardless of whether they were together or not) to have more diversity with the couples concept.

After 'ten' top models of course the female demo are going to start getting sick of the show. Young people are not dumb. The winners never become the giese bunchens of the world. If they were really cover girls they'd have national campaigns. Not reality skits -My life as a cover girl. The fashion world mocks the show. Once the girls leave, tyra basically disowns them. They should end the seris now. The Girlicious thing is also ridiculous.
The CW is doing worse than the WB ever did. Pisher- I agree its time for Ostroff to leave, yes, she should be respect for saving UPN, but her decision have'nt saved the CW. She still has the title of entertainment prez but CBS Entertainment Group Prez. Nancy Tellem is overseeing the CW, she reworked the midseason schedule. Question. Who would they hire to take over Ostroff position?
The CW does'nt seem to be developing any solid material. They need to swallow their pride, buy some programming, friday night lights- nbc is looking to share the show. Or October Road- small town drama. Start cultivating a whole new identity to the public.
Maybe they should becoming a cable channel like ABC Family. They seem to be having some success. Alot of former WB execs have gone to work for their channel.
