"Only" 63? In New York, the Yankees have 25 games on over-the-air, usually Friday nights; the Mets have a few more, but not very many more, usually Sunday afternoons and Saturday games the Vulpines don't scap up.

In fact, just today (or actually yesterday) there was a Tribune article stating that the Cubs are moving more games to cable and are only televising 63 games this year, a record low. Why? Because their rights fees are higher on cable than on WGN, and of course - so it won't conflict with CW programming. With the poor ratings CW has, you'd think WGN would try to air more games, which would defiantly get higher ratings. But baseball skews older (even with the Cubs), and it probably wouldn't make financial sense for WGN or the Cubs.

All 63 Cubs games are going to be carried by WGN Superstation (sorry about forgetting to link the article), and they are carrying all WGN- televised White Sox games as well (around 25, I think.)

Here in Chicago tonight, WGN is carrying a Bulls-Nuggets b-ball game, not "Smackdown" (which will air tomorrow night), but the Bulls aren't on the Superstation tonight because of ESPN's exclusive Friday night cable contract with the NBA, thus the reason for "Air Bud". Superstation WGN Bulls games usually don't air the same night there are cable games on TNT and ESPN.

Superstation WGN is a different feed than WNG Chicago.
Her in Indy, and anywhere else outside of Chi-town, you can watch Air-Bud to night (Friday 02/22) on WGN, not Smackdown.

I wonder if some cubs games are broadcast on the "Superstation" that are not aired locally in Chicago?

Braves games in Atlanta are staying on Channel 17 - though its now WPCH-TV, or Peachtree TV, which split off from TBS' national feed last October. The Braves said they were patching together a syndication network to air those WPCH games throughout the South, but I haven't heard anything on that as of late.

Actually starting this season the Braves will no longer be on Superstation TBS any more. But TBS will have a national package of Sunday afternoon games throughout the season (not Braves games, could be any team).

The following results are based on the fast affiliate ratings (Live Plus Same Day data)

-Total Viewers:
Fox: 28.67 million, NBC: 9.16, CBS: 6.66, ABC: 5.45, CW: 2.84

-Adults 18-49:
Fox: 11.1 rating/27 share, NBC: 2.4/ 6, ABC: 2.0/ 5, CBS: 1.9/ 5, CW: 1.4/ 3

----------

Note: Any prior rating results are based on the final nationals. Also, since the level of DVR penetration has increased from 9 percent in early 2006-07 to approximately 20 percent at present, the overall results may be negatively impacted.

----------

-Yesterday’s Winners:
American Idol (Fox), Law & Order (NBC)

-Yesterday’s Losers (Excluding Repeats):
Big Brother 9 (CBS), Wife Swap (ABC), Cashmere Mafia (ABC)

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
With American Idol on board there is no stopping Fox, which beat the four competing networks combined on this February sweeps Wednesday (does anyone even know this is a sweeps period?). American Idol averaged a stellar 28.67 million viewers and an 11.1 rating/27 share from 8-10 p.m., with the half hour breakdown as follows:

American Idol (Fox)
8:00 p.m. Viewers: 25.18 million, A18-49: 9.5/25
8:30 p.m. Viewers: 28.48 million, A18-49: 11.0/26
9:00 p.m. Viewers: 30.64 million, A18-49: 12.0/28
9:30 p.m. Viewers: 30.37 million, A18-49: 11.9/28

As for this first night of female competition, my picks to get the boot tonight: Joanne Borgella and Amy Davis. For more on American Idol, listen to today’s PIPodcast at www.marcberman.tv.
NBC finished in the distant No. 2 spot with its combination of Deal or No Deal (Viewers: #2, 8.93 million; A18-49: #2t, 2.1/ 5), Law & Order: Criminal Intent (Viewers: #2, 7.70 million; A18-49: #3t, 1.9/ 4) and Law & Order (Viewers: #1, 10.85 million; A18-49: #1, 3.1/ 8). Considering that Law & Order faced a repeat of CBS’ CSI: NY, the results could have actually been better.

CBS’ winter edition of Big Brother remains a bust, with a fourth-place finish in both total viewers (5.24 million) and adults 18-49 (1.9/ 5) from 8-9 p.m. Personally, I do not think the couples concept works, particularly with this lackluster combination of people. Big Brother led into a repeat of Criminal Minds at 7.31 million viewers (#3) and a 1.9/ 5 among adults 18-49 (#3t) at 9 p.m., followed by the aforementioned CSI: NY encore at a second-place7.42 million viewers and a 2.0/ 5 among adults 18-49 at 10 p.m.

In season-premiere news, the CW’s golden goose, America’s Next Top Model, got off to a modest start, with 3.80 million viewers (#5) and a 1.9/ 5 among adults 18-49 (#4t) at 8 p.m. Although there should be interest among the target young females, comparatively this was down by 1.1 million viewers and 21 percent in the demo from its fall season-premiere on Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2007 (Viewers: 4.90 million; A18-49: 2.4/ 7). Top Model led into a repeat of Pussycat Dolls Present: Girlicious at 1.87 million viewers (#5) and a 0.8/ 2 among adults 18-49 (#5) from 9-10 p.m.

ABC capped off the evening with its line-up of Wife Swap (Viewers: #3, 5.62 million; A18-49: #2t, 2.1/ 5), which has taken a big hit opposite American Idol, Supernanny (Viewers: #4, 5.96 million; A18-49: #2, 2.3/ 6) and dud Cashmere Mafia (Viewers: #3, 4.77 million; A18-49: #3, 1.6/ 4). If anyone is interested in a good dramedy about four female friends, Sex and the City comes out on the big screen in May.

Hmmm...looks like CNN would have come in #3 between 8 and 10pm due to the debate, ahead of ABC, CBS and the CW. Good to see the big numbers for the debate!
