LV's cancellation could be seen 100 miles away. It's a older series, expensive, and not a big draw anymore. Yes, a lot of that is due to the fact that NBC moved it to Fridays, but the network is getting similar numbers with game shows, so why bother to air expensive dramas?
ER's renewal really shocked me because they ratings simply do not justify the cost. But they are cutting the budget. I wonder by how much?
NBC's problem is that the only hit shows they have are Heroes, DOND and the two Law & Orders (with The Office doing good demos). All of the other shows perform at similarly low numbers, so it really comes down to 2 things: what has a future and what is cheapest? Based on those criteria, LV obviously fails and ER too, which is why its renewal surprised me.
As for the CW - it's done. Without Smackdown propping up Fridays, ratings will sink even further for the network. CBS, being a private company, cannot hide losses like it could when it was a part of Viacom. None of its series have a promising future (even ANTM is obviously on the backside of its run), so the network had nothing to build on. Its only hope is to take a page from ABC's 2004/05 season when that network launched four monster hits (DH, Lost, Grey's Anatomy and DWTS). But that was a once-in-a-lifetime type deal.

Ah, see, without knowing the budget, you have no way of knowing if ER is costly or not.

When thinking to yourself about how many shows need to be cancelled, you always need to ask: what do they have to replace them with. NBC cannot cancel their entire schedule. So, they need to bring 'X' number of shows back. With the writer's strike, they have even less new stuff to work with and all of their new shows this year, besides Chuck (and sort of Life), failed.

CBS is not a private company. It is a public company. Either way, losses show up to the people that matter. Reportedly, CW lost them (CBS&TWX) around 50million last year. In other words: an insignificant amount of money. I find it mind boggling that people keep claiming that these multibillion dollar companies cannot absorb the tiny loss that is the CW. In reality, they have much bigger losses to worry about on their books.
Okay random question, but does NBC's whole format bug anyone else? The fact that every show is widescreen expcept for reality shows and Scrubs? And that fact that basically every show has a shaking camera. I find it extremely annoying. While I'm bashing NBC, I hate their logo now, with all those words above it promoting shows. It's so tiny I can't even read it.

NBC is like a grandfather network, it has all old aged shows.
The ER cast isn't even original from the beginning, so it's not even ER anymore.
Actually NBC wishes they had more "aged" shows. This would mean they would have more successful shows. Actually CBS has far more "aged" shows than NBC does. The only shows on NBC that have been around for a long time are ER, Law & Order, and Law & Order SVU (to an extent).

No, their format does not bug me, b/c all of their shows are in HD except for the reality shows.
What shows other than Office and Friday Night Lights have shaking cameras?

I just noticed last night, Law & Order has a bit of a shake to it.

* I don't see how anyone can consider Wife Swap or Supernanny a loser over a 2.0 18-49 against Death Idol. I expect WS to be in the 3.0 range once Idol moves to 9pm.
* I don't like any of the new people on Law & Order. Stories haven't been all that great. Hope Anthony Anderson can help this thing.
* As a Big Brother fan, I have to say this has been a mess. The producers may have screwed up this franchise for good. The team thing doesn't work - and worse yet, none of these people stand out on their own. Some of the guys look exactly alike and the girls too. Terrible casting job. They need to revamp quickly and try to save it. But Jen is gone - she was at least compelling.

Is anyone else mad or puzzled why Fox is holding 24 back for a full year? Why not air it in the fall? Doesn't this mean that this show will always be one year behind?
marc, you were right on with the picks for the american idol ladies to get the boot -- I wish you were wrong, they were promising singers. I love Kady malloy and david archeleta
