When ABC launches its fall season in September, don't look for too many new faces. With robust runs of sophomore series Pushing Daisies, Private Practice and Dirty Sexy Money in the pipeline, sources tell the Reporter that any new Alphabet dramas — and the network has as many as seven in the works, including David E. Kelley's Life on Mars adaptation — won't be unspooled until midseason.
I agree -- now they were specific to say "new dramas" and not "new shows", so I assume they will still try to launch a couple of comedies, probably Cedric's multi-cam and Jenna Elfman's Literary Superstar. While I do believe that Life on Mars and Section 8 would best be launched at midseason with the next season of LOST, I'm surprised they are going to pass on any new dramas, again, if this intel is true. It sounds like Fall 08 will look a heckava lot like Fall 07 for ABC.
Yes but if they're relaunching everything then they need to focus on that. What ABC needs more than anything next fall is 3 or 4 comedies to be on the air, meaning 3 newcomers. SW and one new comedy on Monday and two others on either Tuesday or Wednesday at 8 or 9. The dramas that should be launched next fall should only be those away from the female relationship dynamic. Let's give those shows a chance behind the big guns, even if they don't fit all that well. Desperate Housewives is my choice for launching a new show.
-Percent Change From the Year-Ago Evening (Tuesday, March 13, 2007) NBC: + 3, ABC: - 2, Fox: - 7, CW: -10, CBS: -32
----------
Note: The fast affiliate results for Tuesday will be posted at PIFeedback by 12 p.m. ET. Go to the website, click on Ratings Box (the first category), then Last Night’s Results, and Tuesday, March 11, 2008.
----------
-Yesterday’s Winners: American Idol (Fox), Law & Order: SVU R (NBC)
-Yesterday’s Losers (Excluding Repeats): Just For Laughs (ABC), Beauty and the Geek (CW), According to Jim (ABC), Big Brother 9 (CBS), Jericho (CBS)
----------
-Ratings Breakdown: Fox soared past the competition last night, beating the four competing networks combined. A two-hour edition of American Idol, featuring the 12 finalists, averaged a stellar 17.0 rating/26 share from 8-10 p.m., building in each half-hour as follows:
My pick to depart tonight is Ramiele Malubay. Also on the weak side is Kristy Lee Cook, while the most overrated in my opinion is Jason Castro. I just don’t get it.
In the battle of the leftovers, NBC ranked a very distant second in the overnights with its combination of a two-hour edition of The Biggest Loser 5 (5.1/ 8 from 8-10 p.m.) and a repeat of Law & Order: SVU (#1: 7.4/12). As I say every week, keep an eye on the adult 18-49 results for The Biggest Loser, which always manages to spark some interest in the demo.
Next was CBS care of a repeat of NCIS (#2: 6.2/10), Big Brother 9 (#3: 3.5/ 5) and Jericho (#3: 3.7/ 6). Considering the dedication of the fans to get Jericho back on the air, you might have thought it would do better. Then again, no one forced CBS to schedule it in the “cursed” Tuesday 10 p.m. hour. As for Big Brother, if anyone saw the episode please email me (mberman@mediaweek.com) and let me know what happened. While I am still addicted to it, American Idol comes first (and I forgot it was on!).
ABC was barely visible, meanwhile, with its combination of two episodes (original and repeat) of Just For Laughs (#4: avg. 3.1/ 5), two episodes (original and repeat of According to Jim (#4: avg. 3.2/ 5) and Primetime: What Would You Do? (#2: 5.4/ 9). Worth noting for Primetime: What Would You Do? was growth of 69 percent out of According to Jim.
In season-premiere news, the CW’s Beauty and the Geek was barely visible at a mere (and, of course, last place) 1.6/ 3 at 8 p.m. One year earlier, a repeat of Gilmore Girls scored a 1.7/ 3 in the overnights in this time period. Lead-out One Tree Hill was also below average, with a 2.0/ 3. But compared to Beauty and the Geek, that was an increase of 25 percent.

But that's the point mushu -- they are not launching any new dramas, and the returning ones are those of the female relationship dynamic. But I don't necessarily think it's a horrible strategy, as long as the schedule the shows right and treat Jan/Feb 08 as the traditional Fall season, where they can launch several promising dramas, including Life on Mars, Section 8, and Leap. As far as comedies this fall, I agree that they need 3-4 more to add to Samantha Who -- Literary Superstar seems the most compatible with SW, and from multi-cam, Cedric's multi-cam, and the one from the Will&Grace creators could make it. And they already have a 13-episode order for the animated The Goode Family, so that has to be slotted somewhere.
My pick to depart tonight is Ramiele Malubay. Also on the weak side is Kristy Lee Cook, while the most overrated in my opinion is Jason Castro. I just don’t get it.
I also think Malubay will be the one to go -- that was the worst I've ever heard that song sung. I also agree on Kristy Lee Cook being in the bottom two. Most of the contestants really surprised me by surpassing my expectations, especially Cheekeze: who knew! Dave Cook also was solid, while David Archuletta was surprisingly weak -- if he was that uncomfortable with the song choice, why didn't he pick something else? I no longer think he's going to win it all -- the others are growing and he is not. And I agree about Jason Castro -- I thought each of his performances were simply average.
BTW, I no longer think Simon Cowell and Ryan Seacrest are "play-acting" in their on-screen feuds: they both seemed seriously peeved at each other. Anyone know/hear what Ryan was whispering to Simon that made Simon so upset?
Don't get me wrong--if I'd had an interest in the show I'd have watched it. And in fact, of the shows you list, I sure do watch "Idol," and my favorite shows (period--not just my favorite Fox shows) are "House" and "Bones." What's PB? Oh, wait. "Prison Break," right? Don't watch it. I guess I should. We seem to have similar tastes.

As someone smack dab in the demo, I had zero interest in seeing it. The star, the overused premise, the whole look of it - no interest.

The trouble is, you have a brain. Fox doesn't want YOU. They want that part of the demo that's subhuman. The sort of person who will either go on "Truth or Dare" or whatever the heck they're calling that lie detector show, or watch it. The types who couldn't spell CAT if you spotted them the C and the A.

Basically, based on ABC renewals and comparing last fall to Fall 08, ABC would have only 2 to 4 hours of programming to fill (the lower number if they use repeat programming on Friday). Based on that info, ABC will probably try to launch new programming post-November sweeps prior to Christmas which I believe would be a mistake. They have tried this for the past two seasons, with returning shows and new shows, with no success. It is not the time of year that people either expect new programming or have the time for new programming due to the beginning of the holiday season.

I agree with this but really, they don't even need to do that. They only really need to replace a few shows at midseason, one of them is Dancing. I'd save the Bachelor, Wife Swap, and Supernanny for instant midseason filler. Maybe launch one or two new shows in January along with Lost.

I guarantee you that they will launch at least one new drama next fall. They have holes on several nights that need filling. One hour on Tuesday for comedies, an hour on Friday, and an hour on Thursday. I would also save the Bachelor for midseason. I'm sure there will be more shuffling than this and I would make one of the new hours on Sundays at 10, moving Brothers and Sisters but still, this is really quite minimal when you think of it. With the Bachelor and say Supernanny filling in for Dancing and Wife Swap, Oprah, Lost, and maybe Newleyweds along with other midseason filler filling in elsewhere for repeats of serialized shows, ABC could have a really strong next season. The key word is could.
Should note for all October Road fans, I posted my thoughts on what will be the series finale most likely in the series thread. Check it out and let me know if you feel the same way.
