-Ratings Breakdown:
Fox soared past the competition last night, beating the four competing networks combined. A two-hour edition of American Idol, featuring the 12 finalists, averaged a stellar 29.33 million viewers and a 10.8 rating/28 share from 8-10 p.m., building in each half-hour as follows:
8:00 p.m. Viewers: 25.58 million, A18-49: 9.3 rating/27 share,
8:30 p.m. Viewers: 29.08 million, A18-49: 10.6/28
9:00 p.m. Viewers: 31.08 million, A18-49: 11.4/28
9:30 p.m. Viewers: 31.58 million, A18-49: 11.9/28
My pick to depart tonight is Ramiele Malubay. Also on the weak side is Kristy Lee Cook, while the most overrated in my opinion is Jason Castro. I just don’t get it.
In the battle of the leftovers, NBC ranked a very distant second with its combination of a two-hour edition of The Biggest Loser 5 (Viewers: #2, 7.66 million; A18-49: #2, 3.0/ 8 from 8-10 p.m.) and a repeat of Law & Order: SVU (Viewers: #1, 9.38 million; A18-49: #1, 3.0/ 8).
Next was CBS care of a repeat of NCIS (Viewers: #2, 8.65 million; A18-49: #2, 1.5/ 4), Big Brother 9 (Viewers: #3, 5.92 million; A18-49: #3, 2.1/ 5) and Jericho (Viewers: #3, 5.87 million; A18-49: #3, 1.9/ 5). Considering the dedication of the fans to get Jericho back on the air, you might have thought it would do better. Then again, no one forced CBS to schedule it in the “cursed” Tuesday 10 p.m. hour. As for Big Brother, if anyone saw the episode please email me (mberman@mediaweek.com) and let me know what happened. While I am still addicted to it, American Idol comes first (and I forgot it was on!).
ABC was barely visible, meanwhile, with its combination of two episodes (original and repeat) of Just For Laughs (Viewers: #4, avg. 4.72 million; A18-49: #4, avg. 1.2/ 3), two episodes (original and repeat of According to Jim (Viewers: #4, avg. 4.91 million; A18-49: #4, avg. 1.5/ 4) and Primetime: What Would You Do? (Viewers: #2, 7.52 million; A18-49: #2, 2.8/ 8). Worth noting for Primetime: What Would You Do? was the double-digit growth out of According to Jim.
In season-premiere news, the CW’s Beauty and the Geek was barely visible at a mere (and, of course, last place) 1.88 million viewers and a 0.9/ 2 among adults 18-49 at 8 p.m. One year earlier, a repeat of Gilmore Girls scored 1.98 million viewers and a 0.8/ 2 in the demo in this time period. In other words: it’s not good! Lead-out One Tree Hill was also below average, with 2.46 million viewers and a 1.1/ 3 among adults 18-49. But compared to Beauty and the Geek, that was an increase of 580,000 viewers and 22 percent in the demo.
