Simple fact: advertisers and networks use 'C3' data as their 'currency', so that is what they care about most. The 'C3' ratings is a measurement of the 18-49 demo that watches the COMMERCIAL segments either live or within 3 days of the airing of each TV show.
If you think Desperate Housewives and Grey's Anatomy are only doing 'modestly' in the demo, feel free to list all the shows that are currently doing better. The bottom line is that dropping is bad, but still being on top means they still are more valuable than those CBS crime procedurals (just as an example).
C3 numbers reflect the live viewing numbers, and i've said the demos are modest compared to a couple of years ago
Everybody's demos are modest compared to a couple of years ago. ABC's fall free-fall is puzzling to say the least. All of the premiere-week episodes drew numbers similar to last season, but there was a huge drop on most of these shows (DH, GA, UB, B&S DWTS) from week 1 to week 2. A much bigger than normal drop.
Network ratings overall are the pits this season, with the puzzling exception of CBS's Tuesday night. Despite all of the claims of the nets picking up this season because of the strike last season, it's just not going to pan out.
Only one network is averaging more than a 3 rating in adults so far this season? Is that a joke? I don't really look at the ratings anymore because they're too depressing overall. So when I see a figure that astounding - only CBS averaging more than a 3.0 in adults, when a 4 or a 5 was the benchmark only 3 seasons ago, I'm floored. I just watch what I like and leave it at that - I don't really care about the ratings anymore. And for those who still obsess over it (I used to be one) - we all know where this is going. This season or next season will be the year that the DVR will more-or-less kill network television, mark my words. The damage is irrevocable at this point.
By the way, my "30+ player" deal is also valid for dumont's November 2008 Sweeps Game (I'll soon post an icon for this at the "Click Here Now to Play Forum's Games" link; also soon, November 2008 Sweeps PIFC Daily Game, where you can play multiple days in advance). If dumont's game gets 30 or more participants, I'll post the markets for the dates mentioned in my signature graphic.

Isn't Castle a plain old boring procedural like all the shows on CBS? In the preview on Youtube it seemed to me that way in any case......and if it is, I hope it will fail because it's really enough to have one network with this kind of shows.
Cupid doesn't sound any more interesting....like a mix of The Ex-List and Valentine and who would want to see that?
What ever happend to this "Atlas" show that sounded by far more interesting?
from Variety: 'Knight Rider' to go the distance NBC gives full-season order to series
NBC has given a full-season order to "Knight Rider." Decision late Monday repped the Peacock's first back nine pickup this season. Sister Universal Media Studios is the producer.
"Knight Rider's" pickup wasn't a foregone conclusion. An update of the famed 1980s series, the new "Knight Rider" began as a highly-rated TV movie last season, but hasn't fared as well since returning as a regular series.
David Bartis, Doug Liman and Gary Scott Thompson exec produce "Knight Rider." Justin Bruening, Deanna Russo, Sydney Tamiia Poitier and Bruce Davison star.
Believe it or not, Knight Rider is one of NBC's higher rated shows!

And Obveeus pointed out that they're still kicking a$$ over the crime dramas on CBS in this advertiser friendly demo.
Hopefully PD will get the back 9 within the next week or 2. The ratings need to increase again this week (which they would if ABC actually promoted it, because David Arquette joins the show) for it to stand a chance, but ABC seemingly have given up on the show, so I think the few episodes left will be PD's last.
One of the reasons the show is failing, I think (apart from ABC's TERRIBLE handling of the show), is because it's treated like a procedural, but it has alot more serialised elements to it, so it's not as easy to jump in as you'd think.

That's so very true. ABC has not promoted PD at all. David Arquette is an enormous draw. ABC is so stupid. Oh damn, I'm gonna lose it now--

I have no idea--they were dumb enough to bring it back, they might be dumb enough to keep it around a while longer. Hell, if they were dumb enough to put it on the air to begin with....

You're so right--networks love spending a ton of money on shows so that they can fail.

But it's really easy to jump out, BECAUSE IT SUCKS.
And probably a 3.0 in the demo will be pretty good by the time the series ends. Do you remember how mediocre a 4.5 in the demo was 3 years ago? Now pretty much every show (specially on CBS) would kill for it. Not Desperate Housewives, however.
No, but it will soon.
It will slip BELOW 3.0, and I don't think that will be considered good, or even halfway decent, just two years from now--particularly given what it's going to cost to produce a single episode by the time the show ends.
ABC has to bring it back next season, probably the season after that--but they should put aside any thought of trying to keep it on any longer than that.
It's shown one of the most consistent downward spirals, year to year, of any major hit I've ever seen.
