Prime-Time Ratings:
Sunday 1/07/07

The following results are based on the fast national ratings (Live Plus Same Day data)

-Total Viewers:
Fox: 16.20 million, ABC: 13.09, CBS: 12.50, NBC: 10.27, CW: 2.14

-Adults 18-49:
Fox: 7.0 rating/16 share, ABC: 4.8/11, NBC: 3.8/ 9, CBS: 2.9/ 7, CW: 0.9/ 2

----------

-Yesterday’s Winners:
NFL Football overrun (Fox), Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (ABC), Grease: You’re the One that I Want (NBC), The Simpsons (Fox), Desperate Housewives (ABC)

-Honorable Mention:
Cold Case (CBS), Family Guy (Fox), Without a Trace (CBS)

-Yesterday’s Losers (excluding repeats):
Nothing

-Ratings Breakdown:
Ignited by 27.78 million viewers and an 11.0 rating/27 share among adults 18-49 for the NFL Football prime time overrun from 7-8 p.m., Fox led the Sunday troops. Second was a below-average ABC, followed by a tie between CBS and NBC for the No. 3 spot. CBS was third in total viewers; NBC’s new Sunday line-up finished No. 3 among adults 18-49.

A 7 p.m. edition of Deal or No Deal kicked-off the evening for NBC with 10.04 million viewers and a 2.8/ 7 among adults 18-49. Comparably, that ranked a distant second behind Fox’s NFL Football overrun. CBS’ older-skewing 60 Minutes (Viewers: #3, 9.87 million; A18-49: #4, 1.9/ 5) and America’s Funniest Home Videos on ABC (Viewers: #4, 8.25 million; A18-49: #3, 2.4/ 6) tied for the No. 3 and 4 spots in the hour, followed by two episodes of the CW’s Reba (repeat and original) at 2.68 million viewers and a 1.0/ 2 in the demo.

The 90-minute debut of NBC reality/competition Grease: You’re the One That I Want was amply sampled at 11.59 million viewers and a 4.3/10 among adults 18-49 from 8-9:30 p.m., building from lead-in Deal or No Deal by 1.55 million viewers and a hefty 54 percent among adults 18-49. The half-hour breakdown is as follows:

8:00 p.m.: Viewers: 11.75 million (#3), A18-49: 4.2/10 (#2)
8:30 p.m.: Viewers: 11.39 million (#3), A18-49: 4.3/10 (#3)
9:00 p.m.: Viewers: 11.62 million (#3), A18-49: 4.5/10 (#3)

Despite my personal distaste for this show, consider this a positive start for Grease: You’re the One That I Want. Sticking with NBC, the 90-minute sixth-season premiere of The Apprentice fell to 9.11 million viewers and a 4.1/10 among adults 18-49. The half-hour breakdown as follows:

9:30 p.m.: Viewers: 8.65 million (#4), A18-49: 3.6/ 8 (#3t)
10:00 p.m. Viewers: 9.22 million (#3), A18-49: 4.2/10 (#2)
10:30 p.m. Viewers: 9.45 million (#3), A18-49: 4.4/11 (#1)

As a basis for comparison, take a look at the two season openers for The Apprentice in 2005-06 in total viewers and adults 18-49 (based on the final nationals).

The Apprentice
Thursday 9 p.m. – Sept. 22, 2005 (fourth season-premiere)
Total Viewers: 9.94 million, A18-49: 4.6/11

Monday 9 p.m. – Feb. 27, 2006 (fifth season-premiere)
Total Viewers: 9.69 million, A18-49: 3.9/ 9

While the ratings could certainly be worse, they could also be better for The Apprentice. And maybe it is time for Donald Trump to stop telling everyone that his show is No. 1.

Elsewhere, ABC’s feel-good (and teary-eyed) Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (Viewers: #1, 13.43 million; A18-49: #1, 5.1/11 at 8 p.m.) led into Desperate Housewives at 18.62 million viewers and a 7.3/16 among adults 18-49 at 9 p.m. Although this may seem rock-solid, Desperate Housewives was down by double-digit percentages year-to-year (as was Extreme Makeover: Home Edition opposite the debut of Grease: You’re the One That I Want). The increasingly enjoyable Brothers & Sisters capped off the evening for ABC with 12.06 million viewers (#1) and a first-place 4.6/11 among adults 18-49 at 10 p.m. That put retention for Brothers & Sisters out of Desperate Housewives of 65 percent in total viewers and 63 percent among adults 18-49 -- similar to Without a Trace out of CSI in year one. In other words: give us a second season ABC!

Over at CBS, and following 60 Minutes, was a repeat of the underrated Cold Case at 11.80 million viewers (#3) and a 2.5/ 6 among adults 18-49 (#4) at 8 p.m. That led into the original edition of Cold Case (Viewers: #2, 14.11 million; A18-49: #4, 3.5/ 8), followed by Without a Trace at 14.23 million viewers (#1) and a 3.7/ 8 among adults 18-49 (#3) at 10 p.m.

Since part of the NFL Football post-game spilled into the 8 p.m. half-hour, results on Fox are approximate for the remainder of the evening. The combination of the post-game and The Simpsons scored 13.89 million viewers (#1) and a 6.2/14 among adults 18-49 (#1) at 8 p.m. That led into The Simpsons/American Dad at 8:30 p.m. (Viewers: #4, 9.76 million; A18-49: #2, 4.7/10), followed by American Dad and a repeat of Family Guy at 9 p.m. (Viewers: #4, 9.25 million; A18-49: #2, 4.6/10), and the remainder of Family Guy and a repeat of American Dad at 9:30 p.m. (Viewers: #3, 8.77 million; A18-49: #2, 4.6/10).

Following Reba on the CW was the two-hour repeat of the third-season premiere of Beauty and the Greek at 2.06 million viewers and a 0.9/ 2 among adults 18-49 from 8-10 p.m.

Wow, I honestly did not expect those kinds of numbers for Grease. In a way I'm worried, I hope this doesn't mean bad news for TAR when it comes back. (Though I think Grease may only go up to March?)

And The Apprentice did pretty well considering another new night AND sitting out the Fall season. Rosie may actually have helped Trump. haha

You've got it wrong, Marc. The Donald really was No. 1 last night. He was No. 1 in 18-49's at 10:30. Smiler

So, I think that Donald Trump will latch onto that small piece of news and tell everyone that The Apprentice premiere was No. 1. It won't technically be a lie because he was No. 1 in some demographic for some portion of the evening, but people will believe his ratings were higher than they actually were. That is what is wrong with Donald Trump and what he stands for.

I am also guessing that most of the 18-49 crowd that tuned in were males. I cannot imagine many women tuning into that show after the misogynistic comments he has made about Martha Stewart, Carolyn, Rosie, and others and the way he spoke to Meredith Vierra on The Today Show.

agreed; he will spin it.

Also, Marc, you have both WAT and B&S listed as #1 in viewers.

Why the hell was DH so low last night? The last fresh episode attracted 21.39 million viewers. That is a decrease of more than 2.7 million viewers.

Could the long breaks between fresh episodes be eroding viewership?

The Apprentice makes me sick. Donald Trump even more-so....his show is not going to be much of a hit this season, and I believe it would've been worse had Desperate Housewives not performed so comparitively weak.

Whoof. If the demos stay at those levels for Trump, I don't think we've seen the last of The Apprentice. However, if I was a betting man I would have to think that the Grease numbers will come down a lot in ensuing weeks and likely cause some weakening of The Apprentice as well. I didnt see Grease but it appears to very much a rip-off of AI. Once that comes back, will audiences sit though both?

Lopez, how could you miss the promos? If you were not sure, why not check out a tv guide? I never understand that excuse. If you like a show enough, find out for sure.
