You need to figure in what each show costs to make per episode.

How did Cane hold when it hit a season low in the demo?

Unfortunately, networks are short term thinkers. All three shows don't have the potential to be long running shows. So they have to take what is cost effective to them on the short run until they get a long term player. SB and BL are a better option. No one can predict DVD sales of a show in episode 3. They could completely tank. Plus, there's licensing options for SB and BL. I wouldn't be surprised if there's some board game/video game tie in to SB like the other game shows on TV.

They may be cheaper, but I doubt they repeat, or syndicate well or sell on Dvd, or sell well to foreign markets. So I still think something like Chuck is a better in the long run.

I believe the Biggest loser is also used on Bravo. Seems like I may have seen Singing bee there too. DVDs are not part of the plan with a reality series.

This cavemen stuff is so lazy. It's boring lazy humor. I'm not talking about the show. I'm talking about the witty repartee on this board. You included Marc. Yeah... it's not a great show. We get it. How did it become the symbol of the decline of western civilization? No worse than a bunch of other stuff. Better than some. Get over yourselves.

Cane loses yet another 20% from The Unit and it is not a "loser", or even "disappointing" (as has been used recently). Cane even finished behind Cavemen and Carpoolers in 18-49!

Why does NCSI skew so old? I know that other CSI spinoffs also skew older but not to the degree of NCSI. The show gets 16 million+ viewers but CW's Online Nation probably gets more buzz than it.

Hope CBS holds on to Cane. Really like it. Please networks hold on to at least one of my shows.

Don't do it to yourself, do it to others.

Well I am WAY inside the demo Smiler but i'd expect those studies are coming soon. You can do one yourself.. walk into an Apple store and count the ages of the first 100 people you see... most of the people will be outside the 18-49 demo.

The majority of the people in the Apple store won't be outside the 18-49 demo (especially if you don't count kids that were dragged in their by their parents). The real point, which you ignored competely, is what got them in the store in the first place. The advertisers want people to walk into that store and buy what they saw in the ad. When it comes to technology, the old farts are more likely to walk into the store and but what their kids told them to buy, or buy what the salesman tells them to buy, or buy what the consumer reports article they read told them to buy. Notice, their kids, the salesman, and the consumer reports writers are all likely in the 18-49 demo so that is who the advertisers value reaching.

quote:
On top of that it's not a good representation of who watches tv these days. If the bulk of people aren't in your target demo for all shows.... don't you need to rethink things?

Ad agencies can hammer away at the networks to get younger but it's not going to happen.

And as far as study goes... how about the CW? their programming is no worse than what was on the WB and UPN.. kids aren't watching tv.

The AVG was 50 last year and this time next year they'll say the avg tv viewer was 52 or something...

Advertisers pay 'bigger bucks' to reach the people that are harder to reach, not the people that are easy to reach.

U're talking like we've seen 20 episodes of Cane. It's a season (3 episodes) low but with a very small drop. Besides we have to wait for the finals to see if there was a drop at all

Who cares about the buzz. CBS is very happy with 16 million and no buzz

It would give me one show to watch on Tuesdays. I've thought for a while that it would be good, cheap counterprogramming for Idol.

Biggest Loser is probably a half hour too long and Singing Bee is dragging them down. 1 vs 100 would be good counter programming at 8 against the other networks. How about it?

Marc - please recruit more intellectually stimulating people and conversation on this board. Paso is upset with everyone, including you, and we can't have that.

On a totally unrelated another note, did anyone else watch Mama's Family last night? What a hoot that Mama is!

that's a good point. I'm trying to open it up a bit I knew there are other factors. I was even thinking chuck may do better then those shows for web traffic. Although I think the networks are becoming to quick to cancel shows. This season people were asked to check out an insane number of new shows, it's a guaranteed failure, they need to salvage more and add less. Not necessarily because these lackluster rating will turn over, but because replacing your entire lineup is dooming everything. It's almost the equivalent of a movie studio launching 3 big films on the same weekend, it hurts them. And I think this is a problem. But that's an entirely different conversation.
