Prime-Time Ratings:
Sunday 10/07/07

The following results are based on the fast affiliate ratings (Live Plus Same Day data)

-Total Viewers:
NBC: 13.66 million, ABC: 12.44, CBS: 11.53, Fox: 8.30, CW: 1.27

-Adults 18-49:
NBC: 5.6 rating/15 share, ABC: 4.4/12, Fox: 2.9/ 8, CBS: 2.6/ 7, CW: 0.4/ 1

----------

-Yesterday’s Winners:
60 Minutes (CBS), Sunday Night Football (NBC), Desperate Housewives (ABC)

-Honorable Mention:
Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (ABC), Cold Case (CBS), The Simpsons (Fox), Family Guy (Fox), Brothers & Sisters (ABC)

-Yesterday’s Losers (excluding repeats):
CW Now, Online Nation (CW), Life is Wild (CW)

----------

Note: Any prior rating results are based on the final nationals. Also, since the level of DVR penetration has increased from approximately 9 percent during week two in 2006 to about 20 percent at present, the overall results have been negatively impacted.

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
NBC dominated this second Sunday of the 2007-08 season, with the Chicago vs. Green Bay match-up on Sunday Night Football at an estimated 16.40 million viewers and a 6.7 rating/17 share among adults 18-49 from 8:30-11 p.m. Remember, fast affiliate results for any live event are always approximate. Earlier in the evening on NBC was pre-game Football Night in America at 7.26 million viewers (#3) and a 2.9/ 9 (#1t) from 7-8 p.m., and a dominant 12.80 million viewers and a 5.2/14 in the demo in the 8 p.m. half-hour.

CBS opened the evening with Football in the 7 p.m. half-hour (Viewers: #1, 11.78 million; A18-49: #1, 3.6/11), followed by a 90-minute edition of 60 Minutes at a comfortable 10.80 million viewers and a 2.1/ 6 among adults 18-49 from 7:30-9 p.m. The Eye net capped off the evening in the 9-11 p.m. block with older skewing dramas Cold Case (Viewers: #2, 12.81 million; A18-49: #4, 2.9/ 7) and Shark (Viewers: #3, 11.20 million; A18-49: #3, 2.5/ 6). As I always say, there is nothing wrong with including programming targeted to an older audience on the schedule.

ABC opened the evening with the season-premiere of America’s Funniest Home Videos (Viewers: #2, 8.48 million; A18-49: #3, 2.6/ 8), followed by Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (Viewers: #2, 11.66 million; A18-49: #2, 4.1/10), Desperate Housewives (Viewers: #1, 17.41 million; A18-49: #1, 6.6/16), and must see Brothers & Sisters (Viewers: #2, 12.21 million; A18-49: #2, 4.5/12). Compared to one year earlier, this same combination of programming averaged 14.36 million viewers and a 5.5 rating among adults 18-49 for the night -- 1.92 million more viewers and a 25 percent advantage in the demo.

Fox finished fourth in total viewers and third overall among adults 18-49 with the following line-up:

Fox
7:00 p.m. King of the Hill (R)
Viewers: 3.62 million (#4), A18-49: 1.5/ 5 (#4)

7:30 p.m. The Simpsons (R)
Viewers: 5.39 million (#4), A18-49: 2.3/ 7 (#3)

8:00 p.m. The Simpsons
Viewers: 7.74 million (#4), A18-49: 3.6/10 (#2t)

8:30 p.m. King of the Hill
Viewers: 6.16 million (#4), A18-49: 2.9/ 7 (#3)

9:00 p.m. Family Guy
Viewers: 8.39 million (#4), A18-49: 4.0/ 9 (#3)

9:30 p.m. American Dad
Viewers: 6.58 million (#4), A18-49: 3.0/ 7 (#3)

In series-premiere news, CW drama Life Is Wild opened with a mere (and last-place) 1.64 million viewers and a 0.4/ 1 among adults 18-49 from 8-9 p.m. Comparably, built on the performance of record-low rated lead-in Online Nation (Viewers: 762,000; A18-49: 0.3/ 1 at 7:30 p.m.) by 878,000 viewers and 33 percent in the demo. But versus sitcoms Girlfriends (Viewers: 2.85 million; A18-49: 1.3/ 3) and The Game (Viewers: 2.69 million; A18-49: 1.1/ 3) on the year-ago evening (Oct. 8, 2006), which ultimately moved back to Monday, that was a loss of a hefty 1.13 million viewers and 75 percent in the demo. Ouch! Also airing on the CW was 7 p.m. newsmagazine CW Now (Viewers: 852,000; A18-49: 0.4/ 1) and a repeat of America’s Next Top Model at 9 p.m. (Viewers: 1.36 million; A18-49: 0.5/ 1). Needless to say, the CW is almost non-existent on Sunday.

Desperate Housewives (Viewers: #1, 17.41 million; A18-49: #1, 6.6/16), and must see Brothers & Sisters (Viewers: #2, 12.21 million; A18-49: #2, 4.5/12).

Right now, the retention rate is just 70%. Once Finals come in on Tuesday, I bet it will drop because of the DH Runover.

Wow. Just, wow. The CW programming people must be in crisis mode at this point.

Good stuff for DH and B&S. I actually thought DH would hit 15 after the premiere (not that the premiere was bad, just figured it would drop). Last night's episode, in my opinion, was better. For both shows.

B&S was a bit disappointing, considering the hype and drop-off at 10:30 PM.

Shark's demo is low, but if it's like Boston Legal and does well with the 100K audience, it will survive for at least another season or 2.

Maybe CW should merge with fox now. The way it looks this channel will be dead within 2 years.

Don't do it to yourself, do it to others.

CBS is the big loser so far on sundays. They've lost 8 million viewers from the previous year.
I'm really wondering how will CW treat LIW? Wil they axe it after a couple of episodes or they'll give it some more time especially seeing the big improvement over the lead-in

I watched Life is Wild last night...and I actually liked it. Ostroff must have been nuts when she decided to not reschedule a bit and premiere LiW after Online Nation anyway.

Admittedly 70% isn't great, but keep in mind none of the other big hits have found something with that kind of retention. Heroes' lead-out is like 60%, Grey's is below 50%, CSI is getting around 70% from WAT (and more like 60% in demo), House doesn't even have one.

One positive for the CW is that CW Now increased 150K in viewers since last week. Watch the CW spin that to make it some monumental achievement.

I wonder if B&S is plagued by the
half-hour dropout blues again this
year. That pattern persisted for it
almost to the end of last year. That
said, I doubt if these retention #'s
are cause for alarm. Probably expected.

I completely agree with you. I don't think it would've done worse than GG if they would've aired a special preview this WED. I really think shows like LIW have a bigger chance to improve CW's status than GG for exemple

key word is so far Smiler once the DVR numbers start rolling in next week all the Sundays will pop up a bit... You have to watch Football live.... if rumors are true I expect a nice gain for Shark and Bros & Sisters with DVR numbers...

Why would the FOX want anything from the CW???
They already have their own low rated sub-net... My Network TV.
