From what I noticed it has been pretty stable. (averaging around 11 million viewers on tuesdays) I had no idea it was on last night.

I wish The Next Best Thing and American Inventor would perdorm better. I love them both. I'm pretty sure TNBT will be back but I don't think American Inventor will be back.

In comparing the singing bee and don't forget the lyrics. I seem to like the format of Don't forget the lyrics -- one contestant -- chance at a million dollars vs. the singing bee but I like Joey Fatone as host. I don't like watching people sing badly for an extended period of time as they do on don't forget the lyrics -- so as confusing or rather frenetic as the format is in The singing bee -- I opt for the singing bee

The Singing Bee vs. Don't Forget the Lyrics

Format:

Bee: "Remote Control" - Elimination from 6 "randomly selected" contestants to one winner, who then goes to the grand prize round. A winner every time
DFTL: "Millionaire" one contestant tries to sing through 9 songs to win a million dollars. More dependent on "interesting" contestants
Advantage: Bee

Prize:

Bee: $50,000 - A winner every episode
DFTL: $1,000,000 - Locks at $25,000
Advantage: DFTL

Host:

Bee: Joey Fatone - confessed to being in N'Sync
DFTL: Wayne Brady - got contestants and audience members to dance
Advantage: DFTL

Length of Contestant singing badly:

Bee: Only the phrase that is being tested
DFTL: Entire song up to phrase. Frequently includes a chorus
Advantage: Bee

Lead-in:

Bee: America's Got Talent
DFTL: Do You think You Can Dance?
Advantage: Bee (slightly)

Ratings for Premiere:

Bee: 13.1 million viewers, 5.0 in the 18-49 demo
DFTL: 8.16 million viewers, 10.0 in the 18-49 demo
Advantage: Tie

Network:

Bee: NBC - Has successful Game shows and desperate for any programming
DFTL: FOX - Not so desperaate and not good with game shows
Advantage: Bee

I probably won't watch either of these again, but I thought "The Singing Bee" with a more responsive host and bigger Prizes would work better. Plus NBC does need something for 1/2 hour to put in the "Scrubs" slot during Sweeps month.

How is a 5 million viewer difference a 'tie'?

I think you mean '30 Rock', not 'Scrubs'. I'm guessing that both of them will be away on vacation during November.

So the 10 is the share, not the rating?

Where do you get "tie"?

And I don't think it was 10.0 in the A 18-49 demo. Hmmm...?

I learned this week that one of my favorite shows, "Nip/Tuck" is coming back in September with a whopping 22 new episodes. Of course, usually these cable series come back with just 13-episode seasons but so glad to see more of "Nip/Tuck" than expected. This puts the season finale of this upcoming season, if FX airs them nearly in consecutive weeks, at around late February or early March. I love it!

I wasn't bothered by the bad singing on DFTL, maybe because I was busy singing along to see if I could get it. I thought it was awkward on Singing Bee that the contestants were kind of lip singing along with the professional singer. I actually prefer hearing the contestant sing. It is, after all, a karaoke show, and karaoke is all about bad singers.

One thing about DFTL, the contestant has to be likeable. Last night's contestant was likeable enough. Maybe I wouldn't have liked the show as much if it was a less likeable contestant. Of course, she was also pretty cute, which doesn't hurt. It might be a whole different show if the contestant is a man. A girl singing badly is cute; a guy singing badly is just bad.

Although it's a knockoff of "Singing Bee" and "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" and it did not attract as much of an audience as NBC's newest karaoke hit, "Don't Forget The Lyrics" is a much better show.

This guy, Daniel Feinberg, must have entered my brain to write an article comparing the two shows because I have the same exact thoughts. Check it out!

Is there a development timeline that indicates which of these shows is a 'rip-off' of the other? Was there originally one person pitching the idea to multiple networks or something?

From the quality of NBC's, I'd say NBC ripped off Fox. But everything I've seen just says Fox has the "carbon-copy". Which I take as an implication for Fox ripping off NBC.

Given FOX's track record for ripping off shows and rushing them to air (Trading Spouses vs. Wife Swap, Nanny 911 vs. Supernanny, The Next Great Champ vs. The Contender) and that fact that they tried to do it with DFTL before NBC publicly stepped in and rushed theirs to air, I would say FOX ripped off NBC.

Also, the 1st we heard about TSB was the beginning of April:

http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117962393.html?catego...american+singing+bee

It was slated to air in the Fall. I never heard about DFTL until a FOX release, a bit more than two weeks after TSB was first announced, that gave airdates and times for their program:

It's all highly suspect.

I also recall them doing the rip-off thing with The Chamber (vs. ABC's The Chair w/ John McEnroe). Although both of those bombed miserably.
