Huh? Swingtown and Hopkins posted similar numbers. Swingtown slightly lower in overall viewers and Hopkins lower in the demo, yet one should be canceled and the other should be praised.
I must be missing something in this logic.

Swingtown's numbers are just unacceptable. By next week, it will be below 5.5 million. It's time for CBS to cancel it and put the remaining episodes online. I hope CBS is reconsidering and going to let Flashpoint take the Thursday 10 PM slot. No use letting both of your summer entries die off.
Last Comic Standing and Fear Itself isn't showing much promise for NBC. While it can probably last for the summer, it definately won't be back next year.

The difference for me was that Swingtown is losing ratings each week and now loses roughly 2 million from its CSI lead in. Hopkins gained roughly 2 million with a repeat lead in. One is dragging down the schedule while the other kept the network in the race. While its possible Hopkins could drop a lot, with the positive reviews earned for the series and the fact that ABC news shows tend to be stable, I'm betting the numbers hold pretty well.

When a show starts off fairly well, then drops, week after week, with no sign of an upturn, then you have a show that people were perfectly willing to sample, but couldn't muster the enthusiasm to keep watching (and watching TV doesn't really take all that much enthusiasm, does it?).
People gave CBS a chance to prove it could produce the kind of show we see on cable, and CBS couldn't deliver, and they tuned out.
Swingtown isn't incredibly awful--it's not incredibly ANYTHING. It's got a decent cast, ordinary scripts and direction, and no reason to exist.
Burn it off, by all means. It's summer. But they'd be really dumb to order even one more ep.
Thank you, zedman2, for posting a link to this excellent, comprehensive report going back over several seasons and covering dayparts and syndication too.
The only omission is the median age data for MyNetworkTV. Does anyone know where MNT viewership ranks in median age?
The bottom line is that the ad revenue is the same for either show. Swingtown is fine for summer fare unless it drops below 5.

yes, Indeed, an excellent data link. Seeing that the average time shifter is about a decade younger than the average live viewer really hits home for the problems TV/advertisers will have going forward.
Side note: I was surprised to see 5th Grader as one of FOX's oldest skewing shows...but then again, Kid Nation seems to be watched by old folks primarily as well.
Just under a week before July Sweep Prediction Game is just days away from starting. This year, the July Sweep runs from Thursday July 3rd to Wednesday July 30th.
The July Sweep is more competitive than you might think. Here are the results from last season, where CBS and NBC duked it out for second:
2007 July Sweep Results
Ranked on A18-49 (000,000's of 2+ Viewers)
-------------------
FOX 2.2 (5.721)
CBS 1.8 (6.342)
NBC 1.8 (5.639)
ABC 1.5 (4.613)
CW 0.7 (1.942)
MNT 0.4 (0.997)
So now it's your turn to predict the outcome of the July Sweep.
All you have to do is state your predicted viewer and A18-49 averages for each of the six networks. As the Sweep progresses, check under last nights results for my nightly Sweep reporting to see how you are faring with your prediction.
So make your guesses soon on who you think will win, place and show in the 2008 July Sweep!

Last week, Swingtown was the 3rd best demo show for the week on CBS. They are not likely to pull one of their top demo performers. Swingtown would have to sink a lot further before it would not be in CBS's interests to air it.

Fear Itself ...I can't believe that word of mouth hasn't started to wend its magic on this series so that some week-to-week growth gets started.
Most of the word of mouth I have seen has been negative about every episode so far. I'm surprised that people are still tuning in in 'leveled off' fashion given that most of the viewers seem to think the scripts are horrible.
As I already said, Obveeus, it doesn't require all that much enthusiasm to sit down and watch a TV show. There are fewer choices available right now, and some people really will watch anything. Even Swingtown. Which I fully admit, is better than Fear Itself. Which would not be its competition if CBS brought it back. Which CBS won't.

In terms of ABC, for all the discussion whether Women's Murder Club should have been renewed or not, it had the oldest median age of all ABC programs this year at 57. I think that is what probably did it in. I realize it aired on Friday nights, however, even 20/20 skewed four years younger.
The Amazing Race is an unsung hero by having 60 Minutes as a lead-in. Amazing Race manages a median age of 49 while 60 Minues has a median age of 60. Talk about different audiences.

Fear Itself is definitely must flee TV! I sat through 2 eps and both were highly disappointing and last week's ending was awful. Why anyone would want to watch that depressing crap is beyond me. Masters of Science Fiction was 10 times better.

I know who I'm gonna call if I ever need my head cut open! (I'll remind him to bring a jackhammer.)
LOL! I'm sure he's got one stashed somewhere in his lab. I watched Hopkins (mainly because I work there and was curious to see how it turned out) and I thought it was very well done. And yes, that is real "reality" TV. That is the only kind of reality TV I will watch. The numbers were a little disappointing but it looks like it did pretty well. (But let's face it, it's summer, so it's not gonna get much better than that) I'm looking forward to seeing more of it, and hoping it does even better in the ratings in the next few weeks.
Obveeus mentioned "Trauma: Life In The E. R.", which was also a "real" reality show.
I also know a little about it...I was a Pharmacist's Mate in the USN 1966-70, serving 18 mo. on land in Nam. I have never been a patient at Johns Hopkins, but I have seen they're gonna get a considerable upgrading.
And I guess the show is about as successful as any USA summertime show can be expected to be, so far. kudos to its makers, & kudos to JH for allowing it to be made!

...which everyone has been saying for however long now.
One thing this has shown is that TAR has brought down the median age in the timeslot vs. Cold Case. On the flipside, it's increased the median age of the show itself.
Also, I found it interesting how much the time-shited numbers brought down the median ages.
