Originally posted by Chimera: To squeeze out another week of DWTS ratings, ABC should have DWTS special on March 10 revealing the contestants, and having the judges preview the season, along with some professional dances and the usual singer spotlight. Basically like 1 of their Tuesday results shows, but use it to hype up the season and spotlight the contestants. It would mean much more to ABC to have the contestant reveal this way than on their morning show or in a press release...
They will be announcing the contestants on the Dance Wars finale next week.
ABC announced its new Dancing with the Stars lineup during Dance War's finale last night. I'll set aside the horrible "Dance Center" method of announcing it by the unwatchable Kenny Mayne who is still sour about his early exit (it was mostly unfunny, and sometimes, as when they made a "joke" about Vegas act Penn Jillette as a comeback from his lion attack being downright in bad taste [he was not the guy who was mauled by the lion, but considering how bad Roy from Siegfried and Roy was injured, it was not necessary to go there]).
Anyway, here's the lineup: ABC announced the celebrity lineup for next month's sixth cycle of Dancing With the Stars. The contestants will include: actress-model Shannon Elizabeth (American Pie, Love Actually); Steve Guttenberg; Priscilla Presley; radio jock-comedian Adam Carolloa; actress Marlee Matlin (Children of a Lesser God); tennis champ Monica Seles; illusionist Penn Jillette; R&B singer Mario; this year's NFL defensive player of the year, the Miami Dolphins' Jason Taylor; Tony Award-winner Marissa Jaret Winokur (Hairspray); Olympic gold medalist figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi; and Chilean actor Cristian de la Fuente (CSI: Miami). Dancing returns on March 17 at 9 p.m. for the first of a two-night premiere. Tom Bergeron and Samantha Harris will host and Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli, and Carrie Ann Inaba will judge.
Conspicuously absent are two rumored participants, Cheryl Ladd (Charlie's Angels) and Sean Heyes (Will & Grace).
I don't really care for this seasons cast, but I am definately rooting for Steve Guttenburg(isn't it weird all the VM alums they are getting on this show). Then maybe Shannon Elizabeth. I am more interested to see who the pros are. I really hope Ashly comes back this season.

I'm usually left unimpressed with each season's cast until I see them in the premiere -- then I'm usually pleasantly surprised that there are several to root for. I also hope Ashly comes back -- I know she had gotten married and had a baby since the first cycle, which may be part of the reason she hasn't been back yet. If we don't find out any sooner, I know Oprah is going to have the contestants with their partners, plus several DWTS "All-Stars" (she must have been reading this thread ) on this Thursday's show.
After watching last night's mediocre male performers, I feel even more certain that ABC should try an All-Stars version of Dancing with the Stars this Fall. The stars below have built-in appeal, since they each made it far into their respective season's contests. Do this in the Fall, and hire a new person to find more appropriate celebrities and pair them up with more compatible dance partners next Spring.

Over the previous seasons of ABC's huge hit, there were couples who performed very well, had a following, but failed to win the dancing trophy. I think it would be huge, and push DWTS to the statosphere of 30 million viewers now only regularly occupied by American Idol, if they brought back these couples in the Fall to compete again each other. No Master Ps or Tucker Carlsons or Wayne Newton here. Every ones of these couples is good, has great chemistry together, and is guaranteed to bring a loyal following. What's great is that each dancer who didn't win their season (for the most part) only has one celebrity that "defined" them , so it really works out really well when you think about it.
So, without further ado, my dream couple dancing all-stars for next Fall:
From season 5: 1. Sabrina Bryan and Mark Ballas (a crime she got kicked out that early) 2. Cameron Mathison and Edyta Sliwinska (4h place) 3. Jennie Garth and Derek Hough (3rd place)
From season 4: 4. Laila Ali and Maksim Chmerkovskiy (3rd place in season) 5. Joey Fatone and Kym Johnson (2nd place in season)
From season 3: 6. Mario Lopez and Karina Smirnoff (2nd place and absolutely the biggest injustice in the series not to win it) 7. Vivica A. Fox and Nick Kosovich (I believe 5th place)
From season 2: 8. Lisa Rinna and Louis van Amstel (my all-time favorite couple, 4th place) 9. Stacy Keibler and Tony Dovolani (Stacy was probably the best techical female, 3rd place) 10. Jerry Rice and Anna Trebunskaya (Jerry was a little overrated, but definitely had a following and was Anna's best partner)
From season 1: 11. Joey McIntyre and Ashly DelGrosso (only decent partner Ashly had, got 3rd place) 12. John O'Hurley and Charlotte Jorgensen (2nd place and "controversy" over not winning over Kelly Monaco)
That's exactly the right number, but since they should probably have contestants from this upcoming Spring season, they could bump it up to 14 -- depending on the quality of this season's matchups.
This to me would be a dream season will all great, competent contestants. Of course, since they've all done it before at this point, they would make the dances either more complex or longer or both.
The only contestants left out (non winners) are other good partners of Maksim (Laila over Mel B was a toss up), Edyta (joey Lawrence) and Louis (Monique Coleman), but since the partners can only dance we one "star", I chose who I thought was a better match. These folks, plus the coupling of Ian Ziering and Cheryl Burke, and any new matchups, could be held for a 2nd "all-star" edition in another 5-6 cycles.

Yeah, but some of the pairing are just dumb-founding: as soon as I heard the pairings, putting Adam Carolla with 2-time champ Julianne Huff made no sense to me. It reminded me of last season, when 2-time champ Cheryl Burke was paired with Wayne Newton, who could hardly move around the dance floor. Not only are these celebrities not very good dancers, but they're also much older than the professional dancers, and Adam was not the only one feeling awkward seeing them dance a sexy cha-cha together...

To add a bit to this, an example of a good "mature" pairing was that of John O'Hurley and Charlotte Jorgen in season 1. In fact it was so good, they were a very close runner-up.
With all of ABC's troubles this Fall, I've been thinking about this idea I mentioned earlier this year: ABC needs to be thinking of ways to reenergize its lineup, and bringing back favorites to a future DWTS edition is one sure way to revitalize a suddenly aging key franchise. So here's an updated list of who I would chose, adding ones from season 6 (this current season 7 would be too recent to bring someone back):
So, without further ado, my dream couple dancing all-stars for the Spring edition:
From season 5: 1. Sabrina Bryan and Mark Ballas (a crime she got kicked out that early) 3. Jennie Garth and Derek Hough (3rd place)
From season 4: 4. Laila Ali and Maksim Chmerkovskiy (3rd place in season) [or Mel B. with Maksim from season 5 as an alternate] 5.
From season 1: 11. Joey McIntyre and Ashly DelGrosso (only decent partner Ashly had, got 3rd place) 12. John O'Hurley and Charlotte Jorgensen (2nd place and "controversy" over not winning over Kelly Monaco)
And, from season 6: 13. Jason Taylor and Edyta Sliwinska (season 6 runners-up). If Jason can't make it, then almost as good would be season 5's Cameron Mathison with Edyta Sliwinska (4h place) 13. Christian de la Fuente and Cheryl Burke (3rd place) Alternate would be Ian Ziering with Cheryl, who I believe finished 4th in their season
Again, these are some of the best contestants, aside from the actual winners, from seasons 1-6, and they each went far enough along that they have built-in fan base to guarantee extremely strong ratings. And the professional dancers are the most popular of the bunch as well.
This is such a dream lineup, I'm salivating just thinking about it. Come on, ABC, give it a shot!

An All Stars edition of Dancing with the Stars is not going to suddenly re-energize all the programs that are declining on ABC. Their hits are aging and they haven't had a true hit since Dancing debuted. That's the reality. Brothers and Sisters has been a modest hit. Other programs have been decent players for them, but nothing has become a hit. Its been a very top heavy schedule and little Stevie and his chimps made one terrible scheduling decision after another. Now they're paying for it and quite frankly, they deserve it. They mutilated the comedies which were the only thing that used to do decently for ABC pre-Housewives and Lost. And their summers and holiday seasons have been a time where they just shut the lights off. Some of my favorite shows air on ABC: Boston Legal, Ugly Betty, Desperate Housewives, Greys, Lost, and even Pushing Daisies and Dirty Sexy Money but this network flat out deserves its problems.
The interesting thing with ABC is that if you take out DH, GA, Lost, EM:HE and DWTS, you have a lot of middle of the road to poor ratings performers. ABC either produces ratings "hits" or shows that has trouble finding an audience. It isn't able to produce full days of top ratings performers. They have the ability to pull in an audience but only for select shows. They have to work on consistency. DH and Lost are on for only a limited time so ABC has to work fast to replace them. If not, they could settle as the third place network behind CBS and FOX.
If you take out ABC's hits, virtually everything else collapses. They are all being propped up at least remotely. I think they would fall below NBC without those shows. Hell, the CW would probably beat them here and there on Tuesdays or Wednesdays.
