While ABC is likely to win this week in the demo and total viewers, I can't help but say how pathetic of a job they've done with their premiere week planning and the planning for next week too. I just see no reason as to why Dancing couldn't have served as a lead in for Private Practice and Dirty Sexy Money last night. And next week, instead of airing that stupid People magazine special, why not air the season premiere of Pushing Daisies then move it into its regular timeslot. It would probably give the show its highest viewer pool to draw from ever and it could use it after the long hiatus. Its also a tough move by them to air the premieres of Betty and Greys this week and then preempt them next week for the Presidential debates.
Come on Blaine always does 10 million or more and great in 18-49......so why not take a chance? Bush messed him up.
No way they should air Pushing at 10pm and waste an episode like that. It'll be wasted already once when it airs on its own while Priv/DSM doesnt air on the 15th for the debate.
ABC Wed night is being launched as a block, which makes sense.
The debates/pres. addresses play a lot of havoc with network schedules. There is a reason why so many October premieres are this year, and filling in with specials is a reasonable solution as opposed to repeats.
I agree that the debates are pushing everything back. Even Bush's speech ruined the 9 PM numbers. So there were variables out of ABC's control.
As for David Blaine, it was far from a mistake. It did very well in the demos which is what ABC wanted (especially the 18 to 34 demos which ABC has trouble attracting). Sticking PD or DSM there wouldn't bring the demos they were after. The newsmagazine of people half their size shouldn't do worse than BL on NBC. It will also be demo heavy. Launching a Wednesday block makes sense in that it is a cohesive schedule and not just premieres plugged where ever there is space.
The only misstep ABC made is putting BL after DWTS. That space could have been better utilized with something more demo skewing. But all in all, they got it right.
How can National Stay at Home Week last 9 days? It started Monday and lasts til next Wednesday. Annoying.
Overall I think premiere week was pretty good. There will always be things they could have done differently. I would have liked for 2 of the Wednesday shows to launch this week but now in retrospect with Bush's speech throwing the entire night off, it's good they had something else on, even if it did kind of suck.
I'm not a big fan of launching a show in a special timeslot then moving it to a regular slot. It rarely helps and usually just wastes an episode.

Uh huh, and unless the Wed. shows are split up, what did u suggest they air there? Because ABC has nothing else to air.
That's why it was a mistake. There was nothing ready to air there. They could have split David Blaine into two nights. They could have bumped up the weight challenge special. They instead just let Boston Legal run thinking the DWTS crowd would stay around. It didn't.

The crowd stuck around just as little for David Blaine. The weight challenge is also a waste of time as it does them nothing in the long run. Airing BL was the best they could've done.

I agree with mushu about PP/DSM, though admittedly it's kind of a Monday morning QB thing because Blaine didn't do as well as I expected, and only a 2.1 fast nat in the aforementioned A18-34 - I don't know what's so killer about that number. But I think it worked big time for PP last year and would serve them well again.
I don't think they necessarily needed to hold off on UB/GA because they've both been around awhile and won't necessarily get derailed by an odd scheduling the way the Wednesday block would. UB probably won't get a great rating next week without the Grey's lead-out, but that probably won't kill it in the long run.
BL kind of bombed, but to say they should've seen that coming is definitely a hindsight thing, as it's done fine out of DWTS for awhile now.
Thanks spotupj. I pretty much completely agree with your thought too and I would add that Pushing Daisies, which aside from a one time 9pm airing last year after the big Shrek special, has never had a real chance behind a huge hit. I would've given it that chance this Tuesday at 10pm and then launched it on Wed. at 8 the following night. ABC needed to give these Wednesday shows the flashy launches a new show needs and while I like the decision to keep them away from other show premieres, when you have Dancing on your hand, use it.

I agree that David Blaine special was a waste. ABC should have launched PP and DSM out of the Dancing lead-in.

I also agree that the special was a waste. maybe ABC simply didn't want all the bad press about how much their Wednesday shows dropped in their second airing of the season, so they wanted to limit that drop? Less initial sample for PP and DSM, but also less drop from the premiere?

Because of the Oct 7 debate, the season premiere of Eli Stone had to be pushed back to Oct 14th, therefore, the People Weight Special is just a filler on Sept 30th. In terms of the David Blaine, special, the program was just poorly done and very uninteresting versus his previous specials. I tuned out 45 minutes in. And to WlcmLAPD, it was a live event so how would it be split into two seperate nights? Who would watch on the first night when the actual event happens on the second?

The Blaine special should only have been one hour. There was nothing hold viewers over two hours. The special People Magainze weight special could have aired at 9 pm instead of on Sept 30th.

Ya and I'm arguing that Pushing Daisies could've used that massive lead in for a season premiere special and then moved to Wednesday the following night and for those who feel that's too late for PD, I disagee, the show may be family friendly in many ways, I don't think it would hurt one bit to have 17 million people as a potential viewing pool for the season premiere. ABC will get nothing out of these stupid specials in the long run. Waste of time and viewers agree when it came to Blaine and they'll likely agree again on Tuesday at 10pm.
