During tonight's (12.2) episode of "Desperate Housewives", ABC ran an ad touting the new series "Cashmere Mafia" to debut in January 2008.
This would be a change from ABC's previous plans for the series. Initially set to debut in November, taking over for "Dancing With the Stars", it was postponed indefinately just days into the writers strike.
Press reports at the time had only a few episodes produced, so is ABC thinking that a few new episodes are better than reruns, or is this cautious optimism that the strike could be over soon (despite the WGA's rejection of the AMPTP's latest proposal last week)?
Perhaps they only had a few episodes produced, but several episodes written and they've since been able to put more episodes "in the can". Hopefully they have more than a few episodes taped, because I'm really looking forward to this show, especially if the strike isn't resolved and it's one of the few actual tv programs that isn't a reality show.
I think the possible change probably has something to do with the fact that NBC is launching Lipstick Jungle in February. Both shows seems very similar as Sex in the City knock-offs. I vaguely remember critics liking Cashmere Mafia better though. ABC probably just wants to get theirs on the air first because of the comparisons that will come.
I heard that both this and Lipstick Jungle stunk creatively, but ABC will have plenty of holes so I'm sure it will get a good timeslot. I honestly thought this would've been a good lead in for Women's Murder Club earlier this year- with the similar concept of female leads in the show. Probably thought it would be too younger skewing for Friday. Of course, they did think Ugly Betty would be a Friday night hit. Thank-God that never happened.
Actually, from what I have read in reviews, Cashmere Mafia is said to be somewhat good, while Lipstick Jungle stinks creatively
from what I read in reviews, Cashmere Mafia has an excellent cast, good writing, good storylines, but all the critics agree that it kind of copies sex and the city
I really hope it does well because I love the kickass lucy liu, but I kinda fear that I wouldnt watch it after a while because its too female oriented
I would give this a shot after Grey's Anatomy -- I think the right show can definitely succeed after Grey's, and this has several key ingredients to do it. Plus, I don't really see where else they'd put it, based on what we know of other shows (Dance War, October Road, etc)...
The Grey's spot would be good, but if NBC is going to put Lipstick Jungle in place of ER, it'll be in the same time slot and split the audience and allow Without a Trace to continue to win.

Good point -- I didn't follow closely where NBC was going with Lipstick JUngle, but I do know that ABC will beat it to the punch by premiering Mafia a month before NBC launches Jungle.
I think ABC will stick with October Road on Mondays at 10pm even if low-rated just because they have new episodes of it.
Tuesday @ 9pm would be good, but ABC is going with the Dance War results there.
So my view is to pair it up with Oprah's Big Give for a 2-hr block on Wednesdays -- since all 3 of ABCs Wednesdays shows are freshmen dramas, they really can't repeat them well, especially if the strike continues much longer than it already has.
So my recommendation for Wednesdays:
8pm Oprah's Big Give 9pm Cashmere Mafia 10pm repeats of either Private Practice or Pushing Daisies, or a new Primetime Live

Well, I read somewhere that both the Monday and Tuesday timeslots that Dancing with the Stars occupied will be filled with Dance War -- perhaps its not a results show but more dancing? I don't know for sure, that's what I read.

The Wikipedia writeup on the original British series didn't indicate a results show, so it seems that the viewer vote is revealed at the top of the next week's show (in this, viewers vote for the team and a member of the losing team is eliminated by the "Dancing" judge/team coach). Since each team only does one number a week, I assume that the American version will follow this format.

That is a good idea. Oprah will be able to give Cashmere a big push for the female demographic. Then, have rotating repeats of Daisies, Money, Women's Murder, Men in Trees, or Primtime occupy the final slot of the night.
I'd suggest that the Private Practive repeats be put on after Grey's Anatomy on Thursdays when Big Shots runs out. Theoretically, it's the same audience and will do better than anything else that has been tried there.
I think the slot after greys would be amazing if the strike is resolved, greys will give Cashmere Mafia a bigger push for the female demographic than oprah, and I dont think anyone has to worry about lipstick jungle, it does have scrubs for a leadin, doesnt it?
Keep in mind, thats how DWtS originally premiered as well but then went to a separate results show.
