FINALLY! Trio populate ABC's 'Atlas' Janel Moloney and Patrick Breen have been tapped to co-star in ABC's fantasy pilot "Captain Cook's Extraordinary Atlas," with 13-year-old Jodelle Ferland landing the lead in the WBTV-produced project. Described as "Harry Potter" meets "Pan's Labyrinth," "Atlas," centers on Gwen (Ferland), an adventurous young girl who finds a magical atlas that reveals a secret world underneath ours. In the pilot, written by Tom Wheeler and to be directed by Tommy Schlamme, Moloney and Breen will play Gwen's adopted parents. Also cast in the pilot is 10-year-old Nathan Gamble ("Runaway"), who will play Gwen's younger brother. Moloney ("Brotherhood") is repped by Gersh and manager James Suskin. Breen ("Eli Stone") is with Gersh and A Management. Ferland ("Good Luck Chuck") is repped by ICM and Play Management. This has the potential to be a big hit for ABC, if given the right timeslot... quote: Originally posted by lopez: FINALLY! If its all about timeslot then it has no chance. The chimps aren't too good when it comes to scheduling. Perhaps they could entice with banannas?

I see that as a good midseason timeslot. I think either Pushing Daisies or Dirty Sexy Money or both will fail by January, and Wed will need at least 1 new show. Otherwise, pair it up as a lead-in to LOST somewhere, or as a lead-out to a family-friendly show like EM:HE. Finally, I know a lot of people don't think the new Tuesday game show from Ashton Kutcher will be a hit, but if it is, I could see this as a Tuesday @ 9pm lead-out in January after DWTS:Results is done with its Fall run. BTW, totally off-topic, but I think Wipeout is going to be a hit this summer -- it looks hilarious!

I think Wipeout will flop. Maybe not as bad as the Mole, but it will probably flop. Its called reality overload and something that male skewing is bound to fail on ABC. I also see Kutcher's show flopping and that new midseason show not even making the air. As for Wed this fall, I hope all three do fine and that Lost is simply brought in to help eliminate repeats at midseason with the three newbies simply moving around it.

I think Wipeout will have nice demos.. for one week only.
Dance Machine will bomb badly.
The High School Musical will disappoint but will bring nice numbers.
I survived a Japanese Game.. will surprise.

I had high hopes for the "re-launch" of the freshman series this Fall, but ABC is taking it completely literally and using pretty much the same promos for PD, PP, and DSM as they did last year. DSM didn't appeal to me last year, and it's not appealing to me now. The definition of insanity: trying the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.

"Re-launch" or just "buying time" until a development process they elected to elongate offers up some new ideas? And while I understand the rationale for not bringing back PP in the spring, that's a seperate issue from whether the show will be damaged by the layoff. I am only going on feel here but I was generally right about this last year and I just sense soft loyalty here. Creatively, the show improved within the framework it operated in but was that framework really that compelling? It will outperform the other two shows, of course, and the time period will not prevent success, but I have this one down as perhaps the leading strike-damaged show largely because it did have something to lose, unlike a few of these other ABC shows and some of the stuff NBC is bringing back.

I'm even more worried about how Dirty Sexy Money might perform because the creator of Big Shots (which was critically panned and bombed in the ratings), is taking over the series. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/tel...fdb942ed1ae176a13e38That being said, Pushing Daisies and/or Dirty Sexy Money could perform badly and could possibly be gone by midseason, while there's no real buzz on Opportunity Knocks and even though Eli Stone will have DWTS as a lead-in, it'll have two established crime shows going against it (and most ABC dramas dont retain much of DWTS's audience), so ABC could have a lot of room to fill by midseason. Especially since Lost wont return until February and DWTS wont return until even later. And there's also Life On Mars, which is now being lead by another group of execs from a failed ABC series, October Road. And I dont see how "Mars" will retain Grey's audiences, unless they make LOM into a female targeted soap opera... So I hope "Atlas," The Unusuals, Good Behavior, Prince Of Motor City, and the Untitled David Hemingson Project (law dramedy), are the dramas that ABC picks up for midseason. I think Brothers & Sisters could replace DSM if that fails and then "Motor City" could air after Housewives. The law dramedy could air after Grey's Anatomy and the other shows will just go wherever there is room I guess.

'Riches' team aboard for 'Atlas' Top showrunners join ABC fantasy pilot By Nellie Andreeva June 19, 2008, 01:00 AM "The Riches" executive producers/showrunners Nicole Yorkin and Dawn Prestwich have joined ABC's fantasy pilot "Captain Cook's Extraordinary Atlas." Yorkin and Prestwich will serve as consulting producers on the pilot, working alongside executive producers Tom Wheeler, who penned the script, and Emmy winner Thomas Schlamme, who is directing it. If the project goes to series, Yorkin and Prestwich will serve as executive producers/showrunners. Described as "Harry Potter" meets "Pan's Labyrinth," "Atlas" centers on a young girl (Jodelle Ferland) who finds a magical atlas that reveals a secret world underneath our own. Co-starring in the pilot are Janel Moloney and Patrick Breen. The hiring of Yorkin and Prestwich as potential showrunners further boosts the chances of a series pickup for "Atlas," which already look bright given Schlamme's track record. The vast majority of pilots he has directed in the past 15 years -- including "The West Wing," "Sports Night," "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip," "Spin City," "Invasion" and "Jack & Bobby" -- have gone to series. In addition to "Riches," which recently completed a two-season run on FX, Yorkin and Prestwich have worked on "Carnivale," "Brotherhood" and "Judging Amy." The duo, who won a WGA Award for their CBS drama "The Education of Max Bickford," are repped by WMA. Bad Mother's Handbook (Silverstone) and Single with Parents (Milano) sound like great comedies. Is there any possible chance they'd give these shows the 10/9c hour after Samantha Who?
Good Behavior / Outrageous Fortune sounds good also. Maybe after Grey's Anatomy if Life on Mars doesn't survive all the changes?
Captain Cook & Cupid seem like fluffy Friday night shows to me.
