ABC ready to 'Dance'
Network orders five episodes of 'Machine'

By CYNTHIA LITTLETON

ABC's store of reality skeins is expanding. The Alphabet has given a five-episode order to RDF USA for "Dance Machine.," a dance competish series involving everyday hoofers, not pros.
Show has been in the works for some time and is set to begin lensing in January. Casting is now under way.

RDF USA's exec veep Greg Goldman created "Dance Machine" and will serve as an exec producer along with RDF chief Chris Coelen and Brian Veskosky of Metro Entertainment.

"Ordinary people, extraordinary circumstances and a whole lot of money on the line," said Coelen in describing the show.

Goldman noted that "Dance Machine" marks RDF USA's first "homegrown" format to land on ABC. Company has pacted with the net previously on nonscripted skeins "Wife Swap" and "Shaq's Big Challenge."

RDF USA's growing biz comes as welcome relief for its U.K. based parent concern. Company has been reeling from revelations that a docu it produced for the BBC on Queen Elizabeth II included some faked footage. RDF CEO David Frank said the gains from its U.S. arm were helping to offset lost revenue from the U.K. (Daily Variety, Nov. 1).More than one option(Co) Daily Variety

Reality TV is a mystery to me. WHat you think will flop, becomes a hit. What looks great, is gone by week 3. You never know with unscripted shows.

With this strike around, ABC is quickly forgetting how Millionaire died a quick death. A better option would be for them to go back to Millionaire for help or perhaps try summer shows like American Inventor.

American Inventor wasn't really strong enough to handle a summer run, I don't think a regular season run would do any better than that, and would have a good chance at doing worse.

But opposite repeats it might. Plus, season one did well against CSI and NBC's two strongest comedies.

Season one do ok the first couple of weeks, but once after about a month, it was dragging. Thats why it was shipped off to summer for season 2.

This sounds like a terrible idea. If there wasn't a strike, this wouldn't be on air.

The show was already in the works before the strike. From the sound of it, it probably won't air to late spring or summer.

"Strictly Dance Fever," which I assume was a license of Merv's old series from the disco era.

ABCFAM tried reviving "Dance Fever" a few years ago, but I'm surprised that whoever has taken over his company hasn't tried to float it out again to take advantage of "Dancing"'s success.

Yes, they did. It's become their summer dependable. They've decided to move from the summer "Hell's Kitchen" as strike bait instead.
