Since joining Dancing with the Stars a couple of seasons ago, brother and sister Julianne and Derek Hough have been breakout stars on the show. Julianne won the entire contest on her first two tries, with Apolo Anton Ohno and Helio Castroneves. Derek has had almost as much success with Jennie Garth (3rd) and Shannon Elizabeth (4th). Also, both have budding singing/acting careers.

So, what would be more natural than combining all those elements into a variety hour starring those two, ready for midseason to take the place of one of the hours DWTS vacates? Think of it as this generation's Marie and Donnie Osmond Variety show,

or, more recently, the Nick and Jessica Variety hour, which did extremely well as a christmas special on ABC before the realities of the couple's marriage caused the project to not move forward any further.

It would give them a venue to showcase their musical and dancing talents, have guests ala DWTS: Results, etc. Both have shown they have the charisma to do so. My expectation is that not only would it pull in an audience around 15 million viewers each week, its demo would be potentially higher than DWTS if they do it right.

With this season both dancers likely to make the finals on DWTS with their partners Brooke Burke and Cody Linley, this is the perfect timing for this to take place. This is such a natural spinoff that I am shocked it hasn't happened yet.

And apparently Julianne Hough is about to release of Christmas CD -- so a Christmas variety special is at least a minimum.

Julienne is potentially "Dancing"'s breakout star, but I see a sitcom more in her future than any attempts to revive the moribund variety genre. Unless, of course, the Osbournes' Fox show becomes a hit...

If this happened, then ABC would definately remain in its slump. Eeker Re-runs of Cavemen would do better.

Just for the record, I don't see the Rosie or The Osbourne Variety Hour becoming hits either.

Variety shows will be the shows that bring back original programming to Saturdays.

The 'variety' genre is alive and well -- what do you think DWTS is? Yes, it's a competition, but to a large degree it's a revival of the variety genre. I envision this show to be basically a younger-hipper version of the Results show of DWTS, incorporating more of Julianne and Derek's talents and young, emerging artists and less "old fogie" acts...

I don't think anything is going to bring original programming back to Saturdays. Networks seem content to throw on burnoffs, cheap reality and newsmagazines, and re-runs to fill that night.

Watching Derek and Julianne bring down the house last week with their incredible viewer's choice jive dance, then watching her sing her "Halleluah Song" this week, I have no doubt that Julianne is the breakout star of DWTS.

Perhaps she's gotten too big for the show: according to Access Hollywood, she's not returning to the show in the Spring and may not return in the Fall, to focus on her singing career...

Funny you should say that: check out my thread for a Derek and Julianne Hough (from Dancing with the Stars) variety show here:

Finally someone besides me believes in the variety genre. I think the variety genre is on its way back and like I said before Rosie was not the right way for it to comeback.

I like your idea alot Chimera, Julie and Derek would make a perfect variety show. Cheesy characters like Donny & Marie and Sonny & Cher was what made the variety genre great. The variety genre to me is the best genre on all of television b/c it imports every genre into one show. The new generation needs to see the variety shows and I feel they're missing out on them big time.
