6:30 pm "The Essentials: War of the Worlds" (TCM) -> The Oscar-winning original, ever so adeptly skedded by Turner Classic as a lead-in to the zeroes re-make. Wouldn't it have been special if some other network could have programmed "The Night That Panicked America", that exceptionally paranoid seventies tv movie based on the panic that the mischievous Mr. Welles inspired!
8:00 pm The ABC Saturday Night Movie: "War of the Worlds" (ABC) -> The Mr. Cruise feature takes twice as long to tell the same story, but it's all because of those marvellous F/X.

MY SUNDAY PRIME:
LIVE:
7:00 pm CBS Reports (CBS) -> I think it was only a few weeks ago when I was lamenting this illustrious-but-disappeared news documentary series, and voila, the folks at CBS News must have heard me. While it lacks Mr. Rather's imprimatur, it still carries the respected newsgathering brand of CBS News. My next 'wish-out-loud' is for Mr. Silverman's ears...bring back NBC White Paper!
8:00 pm Life is Wild (CW) -> Kwa heri, Life is Wild, you were a 13-episode odyssey that ended far too soon. Never ever have the steppes of Africa been so lovingly lensed for television.
11:15 pm or thereabouts House (FOX) -> In the Daily Game, I predicted that the Super Bowl will go on forever, rather like the whole NFL season. Around 10:45 or so, I'll tune into FOX, use the hand-held to mute the sound, and while grown men are high-fiving away, I'll patiently await the start of House. Even though I'm not a big fan of the series, these post-Super Bowl airings are the only part of the whole Super Bowl extravaganza that I bother to tune in for. I also read an article that suggested Mr. Laurie may not return from Britain to film further episodes (he's rather had it with the rigours of filming television and the estrangement from his young family), so this episode could be setting up a series finale of sorts.
LATER:
7:00 pm CW Now (CW) -> I have grown rather affectionate for this CW newsmagazine on what's popular with the younger set...I have never been so knowledgeable about all the new technology gizmos that seem to be launched every week.
8:00 pm 60 Minutes (CBS) -> What stories will be told on this night against the Super Bowl? I do hope it's not all encore features.
9:00 pm Masterpiece: Miss Austen Regrets (PBS) -> Has anybody else been enjoying the re-booted Masterpiece series with Miss Gillian Anderson as host that has been everything Miss Austen since re-launching in early January. Marvellous productions so far (I've been burning my own set of DVD's of this series for watching again or lending to friends). Note to self...I must research on the PBS website how their ratings compare for "Masterpiece" with its parent "Masterpiece Theatre".

The Rocket Club episode (Foreign guy trying to buy explosives) was quite funny.
Other people looking for a break during the boring parts of the game (or looking for a way to avoid it altogether) might try: Ice Age and Robots on FX. 2 hours of Girlfriends on BET. Banned from the Bible (a look at what didn't make it into the New Testament) on History Channel. Puppy Bowl 4 on Animal Planet. The Closer marathon on TNT.
I'll be watching the Superbowl on FOX as long as the game stays interesting.
