I got Dexter season 1 on DVD and really enjoy it and will get season 2 too !! However I do know some people who do not care for strong language or graphic violence both of which I think CBS will tone down so I recommended they check out the edited version coming up on CBS ! Will this show work out by eliminating alot of the violence, language, and sex ?
It should get a good sample audience for its premiere. Perhpas 12 million-ish.
After that, it will depend on how it clicks with mainstream audiences.
My guess is that it will, at the very least, hold 10 million through its run.

I read somewhere on-line (it might have been Mr. Matt Roush at TV Guide) that Dexter will be edited for language and explicity, but most of the violence will remain intact. This is CBS, after all, where every night viewers are subjected to an neverending stream of violence, murder and mayhem.
I think that's a very optimistic number. I don't think it will fit that well with the cut and dried dull as hell Cold Case and I don't think its lead in will be much above 10 million. That said, I will be checking out the show since my Sundays now simply contain Family Guy and American Dad. Yet, I don't think its going to translate well into a CBS hit by any means. Is it proceduralized like the CSI minnions or is it more serialized ala the Unit?

It's serialized--premium doesn't do procedurals.

Actually, the show didn't become "serialized" until the last three or four episodes of the first season. The first half of the season was "procedural" in that Dexter went after a different killer each week.

Then I smell failure and major failure.
I don't think it will be a failure but having Cold Case in front of it is not exactly the best of leadins. But, its not the worse either.
But, I bet it will get viewers to tune in (from other channels @ 9pm) from all of its promotion.
I bet it does no better than the repeats of Shark would've.

While I don't think the violence or graphic gore will be a problem (there's honestly very little of the latter compared to a gross-out show like "CSI"), the "unsympathetic" lead character isn't exactly going to woo over the usual CBS crowd. Not to mention by the time network standards and practices are done with it, Debra is going to be a mute.

Coming from someone who has watched both seasons, you are probably right. The show seems to be one of those "acquired taste" types of shows to me. Although as previously mentioned, the first eps were more like procedurals and the lead is after other serial killers, however, the ongoing S1 storyline was much more interesting - the Ice Truck Killer, but then you get into the whole issue with the "serialized" stuff. I never thought it would have mass appeal, but it really is addictive and a lot of people seem to talk about the show so perhaps there will be some initial tune-in to see what all the fuss is about. I guess it can go either way.

It will certainly be interesting to see how it does. I wonder what would happen if it were to suddenly pull 8 million for a repeat. Would CBS continue to air the encores edited down in the future?

If it did become a minor hit, CBS should produce the episodes for CBS first, then also fim the Showtime version for airing at a later date.
