I'm surprised that so far CANE is beating out VIVA...the stench of failure of this bizarre outlandish idea of blending drama with a musical is so powerful they can smell it all the way over in Iraq.
I think the mere placement of CANE in this timeslot is a vote of No Confidence by the network. The familiar "they have to put SOMETHING there" comeback says it all.
This also will be a show where competence or lack thereof in advertising will make a difference. Whatever you thought of the previous name for the show, CANE barely seems like an improvement, and is non-suggestive. Whatever is going to drive the series - a conflict, perhaps - should be front and center in promos. Merely laying out the nominal subject matter probably won't be enough of a focal point.

The new CBS swill. Funniest typo ever. Because it's real.

For what it's worth, I think both will gone within two months. "Viva Laughless" for obvious reasons, and "Cane" for all the reasons Bruce noted. Even if it weren't dumped right into CBS' all-purpose showkiller time-slot, does that title tell you what the show is about? No. Is it interesting-sounding? No. Does it inspire you to watch out of morbid curiosity? Absolutely not. In short, instant flop.
Some kind of play on words of Cain and Abel ("Cane and Mabel?") might have worked. "Cane" does not.
If Cane was that good it would've been put after CSI or even used to after 60 Minutes, which would've given it a good lead in. The Unit is imo, CBS's Lost. Aside from NCIS, nothing seems to fit well with it. It has a home life soapy element and action at the same time. Cane just doesn't seem like a good fit. If they were going to sacrifice something, why not Viva Laughlin or Swingtown, which will likely last 3 weeks also.
