Cycle 10, Episode #10 of America's Next Top Model:

The Models start their stay in Italy. Standard shot of airports, taxis, and local scenery to let us know we have changed locations. Anya unintentionally does the traditional ‘kiss the ground’ upon disembarking from the taxibus. Fortunately, she was ok after face planting into the road. The models finally make their way to their new ‘home’ and, as a treat for viewers, they have an indoor pool. This ‘home’ already looks much better than the New York location. As an added bonus for viewers, the ‘Tyra Mail’ electronic ticker was unable to make the trip, so the models will return to tradition and read from invitation cards, instead of screaming words in unison as they scroll across the screen.

Each season, it seems like one model steps off the plane and gets sick (or pretends to be sick) thinking that it will give them an excuse that will keep them in the competition longer. This season, Fatima takes on the role of being ‘severely ill’ when it might benefit her. She claims to be very sick. She claims to have lost her voice. Then, when it comes time to perform, she is feeling perfectly fine.

The next day, the models take a tour of Rome’s fashion hot spots. To spice up the tour, they are all given a Segway Scooter to ride around on during the tour. You can tell the models have fun on these things, even if a few of them took a spill. While on tour, the show has strategically placed models dressed in fine Italian fashions so the tour director can explain Italian style to the models through these examples. At the end of the tour, the models are surprised with their first challenge: dress up in Italian clothes and do a runway style walk before a guest judge. The judge thinks Dominique is not fresh, which is a nice way of saying that she looks old. Whitney is told she will make a good face model, which is a nice way of saying she won’t be a runway model with that body. Lauren is told she has beautiful legs, which is a nice way of saying she still needs to learn to walk. In the end, the judge gives the most positive comments to Katarzyna and Anya and declares Anya the winner of the competition. Her prize is a designer dress she can wear at her next red carpet event.

The following day, the models are given their next challenge: a Covergirl commercial done in Italian. They are given a script to memorize along with coaching on pronunciation as their hair and makeup is being done. Each model is then given 30 minutes of time to get the commercial for Covergirl Queen Collection lip color filmed. This product may provide women with ‘bold color’ on their lips, but it really looked gaudy and unappealing. The makeup was done to give the models ghostly white faces and lipstick that glowed so brightly that you could probably see it in total darkness. Let’s hope this doesn’t become ‘the look’ any time soon.

The call out at judging panel this week with comments on the commercial was as follows:

Fatima: The commercial director said she had the best Italian pronunciation/accent and that he loved her work in the commercial. Tyra said she loved the commercial. Paulina did not like Fatima’s look at all. Needless to say, Fatima was called out first to let us know that Tyra still runs the show.

Katarzyna: The commercial director liked Katarzyna the best. Jay Manuel thought her delivery of the commercial was flat. Paulina loved the commercial and Tyra thought that it was boring. Katarzyna’s educational background/ability should have given her more of an advantage in this challenge, but ultimately, she came off as too technical.

Tonight’s episode really seemed to set up a struggle between Fatima (Tyra’s pick) and Katarzyna (Paulina’s pick).

Anya: She blew almost every word of the commercial, but the director liked her look and her flirtiness with the camera/male model in the commercial. Nigel really likes Anya’s look, but thinks her delivery made it sound as if she was unsure/confused about every word. Nigel also commented that people can’t understand when she speaks English, either. This could hurt Anya in a competition where the main modeling prize is a commercial for Covergirl. Then again, this show has had some poor speakers win in the past.

Dominique: She narrowly avoided being at the back of the pack with a horrible commercial. She had no language skills and no believability in her delivery. Her delivery was WAY over-the-top, but her positive attitude/attempt kept her out of the bottom two.

Note for the bottom two: Fatima moved on last episode after avoiding doing the challenge task on which elimination was based. Perhaps that strategy should have been employed this week? Certainly, both Lauren and Whitney would have been better off being evaluated on their complete body of work than on their Italian Covergirl commercial.

Whitney: Jay Manuel and the commercial director both thought that Whitney was not believable in her commercial and Jay described her as alternating between fake and bitchy the whole time. Her delivery of the commercial seemed very fake to most of the judges at panel as well. Only Tyra liked it at judging panel while Paulina thought that it was horrible.

Lauren: As expected, Lauren acted about as comfortable in front of a camera filming a commercial as Heather did last season. Like Heather, she took some of the very best still photos, but didn’t do well in front of real people, working with a script, and while feeling judged. The commercial director loved the way she looked, but after watching her do the commercial decided she could only be a print model. Nigel and Paulina had positive things to say about her overall potential/look, but Tyra felt that Lauren simply gave up.

Side notes:

It seems like Tyra has told the last few eliminated models to keep pursuing their dreams and that they had lots of potential and would be models if they kept trying. Tyra did not have those positive words for Lauren. Instead, she took a final jab at Lauren for giving up and seemed to suggest that modeling just wasn’t in her future.

Paulina and Tyra seemed to be on opposite sides in their opinions of Fatima, Whitney, Lauren, and Katarzyna. I’m sensing a diva power struggle. Tyra is looking for underdogs while Paulina is looking for classic beauties.

The preview for next week shows has the models dressing up as Gladiators and posing with a male model. The photo shoot will be done by Tyra Banks, the photographer, so there will be lots of Tyra onscreen in next week’s show.

I'm just going to have to call the Cover-Girl Commercial episodes "the Beauty Killer", because for the past 3 seasons they manage to kill the most beautiful contestant. Brittany, then Heather, then Lauren because they can't read a cue card. So who gets in instead? Jaslene! Go figure.

Rome appears to be The Eternal City of Face Plants
because Anya does it the first step off the bus. Then its followed by the girls doing it on Smegways. Nice to have those modelly looking girls to for the assistant to point out. Then apparently we find the Michael Kors of Rome: some troll who demands good taste but can't dress himself. Let me add to your euphanisms...

Italian Euphenism . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Actual thought
*"You are very blonde, Anya" = "Of course you're going to win. DUH!"
*"You are not very fresh, Dominique" = "You old hag! You look like some old sock after the dog has used it as a chew toy. They promised me girls, not someone my Grandma would help across the street!"

And thank Goodness the Tyra Mail marquee works only on 120v! But Tyra still finds a way to put herself in the Mona Lisa. I'm shocked she didn't choose Botticelli's Venus on a clam.

Fatima: I thought Tyra made her #1 for the same reasons Obveeus said. Nice that your terrible terrible illness cleared up right as the commerical started filming. :eyeroll:

Katarzyna: Congrats to actually being able to pronounce Italian. You should have gotten #1

Anya: You can't even speak English, let alone Italian. But of course you gets through. 2 shoots, an evening gown and your face imprinted on a Roman street. You're definitely....Blonde.

Dominique: You Looked like a Clown....Seriously! That overdone lip color and your face looking 3 shades lighter than the rest of the body, you looked like an actual circus clown. I thought you should have been eliminated and sent to Ringling Bros.

Whitney: Yeah, you were fake, and you should have tried to compensate. On the other hand, you're the first plus-size to make it to the overseas location. So turn the ass-kissing up to 11.

Lauren: I'm adding a new "Famous Last Words on a Relaity Show" for you. We know on this show "I can't pose Naked" will send your photo to dissolve at the end of that episode. But Lauren manged to find another with "Cover Girl? Oh No!" Now you KNOW it's coming, so why didn't you do anything to work on it?

Personally, I think Miz Tyra didn't say follow your dreams because she sees you as competition. Good Luck in the Model Marketplace, Lauren.

Apparently that worked out well for Covergirl because they wanted a way to market to the quickly growing Hispanic population. Personally, I thought jaslene was a poor choice for a winner, but she did fill a niche modeling market and has done very well for herself.

The guy is Italian, not American. Being blonde is not a good thing in his eyes. The proper translation would be 'It is a shame they did that to your hair'.

Work on her ability to memorize lines? No time, she was busy learning to walk. Wink Did you notice she went up a staircase while wearing high heels this episode?

Tyra's time doing any real modeling is over. Lauren can do well with high fashion print work...and has a great look for the runway if she can learn to walk. This season really has had a number of models with a lot of real potential to earn a good living in the industry.

Who Knew Watching ANTM could be dangerous?

Stabbed over TV 'Top Model' noise

By CASEY MCNERTHNEY
SEATTLE P-I REPORTER

A woman who suffered life-threatening stab wounds to her chest and neck Wednesday allegedly was attacked by another woman who had been upset that she was too loud while watching "America's Next Top Model."

Police say the 42-year-old victim and her friends were in a Columbia City apartment drinking beer and watching the reality show hosted by former supermodel Tyra Banks, in which women compete for a chance to launch their modeling careers.

The alleged attacker, an acquaintance of the victim, told the other woman to stop talking loudly. A police spokesman did not specify how they knew each other.

When the "Top Model" fan refused, police say the other woman then opened the apartment door and told her to get out, according to a police report.

Police said the argument then turned physical, with one woman having a clump of her hair pulled out.

The attacker then pulled a paring knife from a nearby apple and began stabbing the 42-year-old, according to a police report.

Witnesses were able to pull the knife away and separate the two before police say one ran into a bedroom.

Medics and police were called about 9:30 p.m. to the apartment in the 5000 block of 37th Avenue South.

Police spokesman Jeff Kappel said the woman's stab wounds were so severe, medics who rushed her to Harborview Medical Center called for donor blood.

A police officer found her lying on a neighbor's couch with a blood-soaked towel covering a chest wound roughly 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch wide, the report said.

The woman had gone upstairs and knocked on the neighbor's door for help, saying she had been stabbed and her money was taken. Police found the clump of hair in a garbage can, but did not find a weapon.

The suspect was still at large early Thursday evening.

Interesting story. No doubt, the problems between the two were preexisting. The article is a good example of a very poorly written 'news report'.

In other news, here is the most interesting video bonus clip for this week's episode:CWTV.com link

Apparently no teveryone looks the same way at a commercial. For Lauren, it is the hardest thing she has ever had to do in her life. For Fatima it is the best thing she has ever done in her life.
