Perhaps Zucker's biggest management test is with Kevin Reilly, whom he hired from the FX cable network to replace him as entertainment boss three years ago. Though Reilly developed Heroes, he has delivered a series of high-priced duds like The Black Donnellys, Kidnapped, and the all-star Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. Asked about Reilly's budget overruns (notorious in the industry), Zucker turns squeamish and says he has given Reilly leeway "because we need to fix this." At NBC's "upfront" presentation to advertisers on May 14, Zucker says he expects NBC to unveil five new programs - three dramas, one comedy, and one reality show - for its fall schedule. Zucker and Reilly are considering stretching The Office to an hour and canceling the original Law & Order.

One show that's definitely returning: 30 Rock. Though it ranks a dismal 138th among adults 18 to 49, Zucker and Reilly decided in early April to renew the sitcom for a second season. After all, the critics like it. It landed on year-end ten-best lists. It's smart! It's feisty! It's a fighter! True, it hasn't delivered yet. But can't everybody see it has potential?

Yikes! I remember someone on the forum was speculating that NBC might be experimenting with an hr long office. He's right!

Five new shows? 1 for every weak weeknight?

What a mess NBC is. It really is amazing how far they have fallen. Maybe they could dig up some Friends repeats. Big Grin

I bet they would out perform over half of the current lineup.

Ya know, at one time I heard that NBC was considering a Friends specials revival for sweeps periods that would feature 4 or 5 hourlong specials with all the Friends. This was about a year after it went off the air and NBC was already in dire straights. I've gotta google that. I know medialifemagazine had the article.

Here's the article on it. It of course never happened, but is an intersting idea:

The Office is one of my favorite shows on TV, but 1 hour just seems too long for each episode. (About 30 minutes too long).

Perhaps a 90 minute Heroes instead.

I guess it's too late for a series finale for Law and Order if NBC is going to cancel it.
Since it's been on for so long I'd say this is one show that definitely deserves one.

Hmm and hmm . . . May 14 is a Monday. I presume that NBC, despite everything, still insists on batting leadoff.

The good news: Zucker and Reilly are attempting to plug the holes.

The bad news: Zucker and Reilly are the ones attempting to plug the holes.

I like the Office but I am not sure it can maintain it's quality with a weekly hourly series. That's a lot more for the writers to write and keep fresh every week.

I think this is a dangerous move for one of their more successful series. It could easily backfire. Do they really want to mess with one of the few shows they have that is working???

The Office, I think, would do pretty good as an Hour Long show, but all the other people over at www.theofficechat.com say it wouldn't and it would get cancelled really fast.

NBC has already proved that The Office can be an Hour Long Show with all the Supersized and Hour shows they give them. I think that is what they have been doing this past season. If you see their schedule, we have 2 supersized episodes on the way, and then the season fanaly is an hour long.

If NBC decides to change it, it would be a good thing. And if not, they can always change it back, right?

It's tough to get that audience back once they move on to greener pastures. A couple of supersized episodes is not the same as a seasons' worth of fresh comedy week in and week out for an hour at a time. An hour long sitcaom is not something the networks have had alot of success with. There may be a reason for that.

NBC sounds desperate. They need to build around their successes, not bleed them dry. They may be the quality network but bringing shows like FNL and 30 rock back is not going to increase their viewership. Taking a big risk in eroding the audience for the Office is not the smartest move out there.

CBS has Survivor and Big Brother. ABC has Dancing with the Stars and AI on Fox. Those all are or have recently been big moneymakers and ratings winners for those nets. Maybe not the most cerebral shows but they have mass appeal. They have made millions for those nets and allow for developement of other shows. NBC hasn't been as successful with that type of show. Before they get all creative with quality shows they need to be commercially successful. Otherwise the CW may be moving on up.
