NBC To Become 24/7 Today-Tonight Show Network

April 1st, 2008 by Bill Gorman Email This Email This

Jeff ZuckerNBC’s Jeff Zucker announced today that beginning soon after April 1, NBC would transition to a two show network, expanding the Today Show to 12 hours a day from 6am to 6pm and the Tonight Show With Jay Leno to 6pm to 6am.

Said Zucker, “If you look at our ratings, you could say that haven’t been hitting too many out of the park for the last few years. You might even say that since I took over at NBC we haven’t hit any out of the park, so I’ve decided to go back to my roots. The only real success I’ve ever had was the Today Show, and it’s been #1 since before I had hair. We expanded it to 4 hours back in September, I figured why not make it half the damn day, it’s called the “Today” Show after all. The only other show on NBC that’s consistently number 1 even without its whiny writers is the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, so it’s going have to cover the other half of the day because, god knows, we’ve got to give Meredith Viera her beauty sleep.”

The two show schedule promises other benefits Zucker added, “Having to sell advertising on a 4th place network is so tiresome, so with just a two show network the upfront presentations to the advertisers are a thing of the past. We’ve got two shows, they’re both #1, you advertise on them, and thank you very much”.

Pilot season is also over, permanently, Zucker noted, “I just hated wading through all those endless dreary pilots, and as you’ve seen we weren’t very good at picking new shows, so now I can just spend more time at my villa on Nevis”.

Asked about his rival’s sudden move, CBS’s Les Moonves commented “As woefully overall as NBC has been doing under Jeff, they actually did have some shows with audiences that had more people still chewing with their original teeth than pretty much all of ours, so maybe we’ll pick up some of them”.

Questioned about whether the dominating performance this spring of American Idol, referred to by some in the industry as the “Death Star“, might have driven NBC’s decision, Fox’s Rupert Murdoch said “It was All Too Easy…”

The joke was lame and a day late to begin with. Why not talk about the actual NBC schedule instead?

NBC is going to kill Thursday (their cornerstone) with more 30 Rock and a double dose of The Office that will lead to more reruns. It looks like something CW would do: not even enough original programming to cover the Fall lineup, much less account for any failed shows. I suppose they can bring in L&O:CI again and expand Biggest Loser to 2 hours after Kath&Kim fails, but they don't look to have anything to save Thursday.

Everywhere. Variety.com is a good place to start as they have it at the top of their TV news.

Variety gives a lot more details:

NBC has greenlit a spinoff of “The Office” that will debut after the Super Bowl, and will put “Saturday Night Live” in primetime for four weeks next fall.

Those are some of the headlines to emerge from the Peacock’s meeting with advertisers in Gotham Wednesday morning. Programming chief Ben Silverman unveiled a 65-week sked--this summer, plus all of next year--that emphasizes family-targeted fare at 8, broad appeal or “blockbuster” event programming at 9 and adult-themed dramas at 10.

Among the highlights:

# Just four new shows are slated for the fourth quarter. Christian Slater starrer “My Own Worst Enemy[b/]” is set to air Mondays at 10, laffer “[b]Kath & Kim” will bow Tuesdays at 9:30 (following “The Biggest Loser: Family Edition”, “Knight Rider” will drive into Wednesdays at 8, and “Crusoe” is set for Fridays at 8.

# “Friday Night Lights” will be back--but not until the winter. “ER,” “30 Rock,” “Medium” and “Law & Order” have also been renewed, as has “Lipstick Jungle.” Matthew Broderick has been booked for the season finale of “30 Rock.”

# NBC will use the post-Super Bowl berth to air a special episode of “The Office,” followed by the previously reported “Office” spinoff.

Peacock will once again air hourlong “Office” episodes in September. In October, “The Office” will be followed by the tentatively titled “SNL Thursday Night Live,” a live half-hour of politically-themed sketches geared to the election. Primetime “SNL” will air for four weeks.

# Tom Fontana drama “The Philanthropist” takes over for “Worst Enemy” Mondays at 10 in the winter. “The Office” spinoff will air Thursdays at 9:30, after the original, starting in February. And “The Celebrity Apprentice 2” will spell “ER” Thursdays at 10 in the winter.

# NBC has greenit a series called “Merlin” that will anchor the net’s winter Sunday sked at 8 p.m. “Medium” will move to 9 p.m. Sundays in the winter, followed by new drama “Kings”. Latter project will air as a backdoor pilot in the fall and will shift to Sundays only if it’s greenlit to series.

Peacock is also planning plenty of specials for Sunday nights.

# Net will emphasize quality fare Fridays in the winter, with “Friday Night Lights” slated to return at 9 and critically praised drama “Life” following at 10 (in the timeslot that housed “Homicide” for years).

# For now, NBC is planning to hold off a third season of “American Gladiators” until summer 2009 (season two premieres next month). Other summer fare in the works includes the cooking reality skein “The Chopping Block,” the Canadian drama “The Listener” and the Thom Beers/BermanBraun reality skein “Shark Taggers”.

# “Scrubs” is not on NBC’s schedule for next season and has been expected to move to ABC.

Go to http://www.nbc.com/Primetime/index.shtml for more info.

Zip, Man of Your Dreams, Blue Blood, Top Gear, Salvage (documentary series), all got picked up too.

So it seems the Luke Reiter legal thriller was the only pilot that wasnt picked up (at least as of now)

Good to see Blue Blood on the list. It ought to be an asset to their schedule. Still a shame that All Rise isn't there.

Don't count NBC out yet. They will likely renew just to spite ABC and there's too much time on Thursdays with nothing on not to pick it up. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Office spinoff not materialize and Scrubs taking its place.
