Your post and the post on LIPSTICK JUNGLE expose a tactical blunder.
One of the strongest promo vehicles for JUNGLE would be MEDIUM, so much so that in the orig sked MED was going to be JUNGLE'S lead-in.
I'm ok with the scrapping of that plan. But JUNGLE premieres Feb 7th, and MEDIUM was pulled for its Feb 4th airing.
Is this significant? Maybe. Is it revealing? Definitely.
Bruce, do you really think there is any significance to NBC holding Medium back for four weeks, even when it's debuting Jungle on the 4th? I thought the reason for them holding Medium back until February was because of sweeps, so that they would have all-new programming for that month. Do you think there is something else to it?
Perhaps my last sentence was not clear enough. What I meant was 'will JUNGLE not having the MEDIUM promos on the 4th matter for JUNGLE on the 7th?' and 'it is revealing that these scheduling blunders continue.'
As far as the pull of MEDIUM, while it hurts its chances of possibly building momentum, I think they were just looking to max out AG/DOND, which were doing better.
They probably figured MEDIUM would not materially build momentum anyway, but that on the other hand it could later quickly return to the level of first 3 eps.

Since NBC is scaling back on the number of pilots they order (though reportedly not this year), and with the strike halting production of so many new pilots, will the network take the safe route and hold on to the shows that they have, or will they go to an all (or mostly) unscripted schedule? Can we expect to see a lot of the same shows on the schedule next season? Just curious what the new season might look like. I've heard rumors that Zucker might be looking at going to a year-round format instead of a traditional fall-to-spring season. If they did that, how would their scheduling work? Would some shows be scheduled during fall and winter and others in the spring and summer?
The only thing I can comment on is that I don't see them gutting the drama genre they have.
I think the Zucker comments simply indicated they were going to start cherrypicking the drama development process.
As far as the current shows, they can't just exit the genre. By his own admission, these shows are tough to develop.
I look for HEROES, SVU, and probably L&O to get necessary priority. I see MEDIUM back, perhaps less priority. I say ER gets a mini-season to close out. I say CHUCK is in, priority, maybe not. CRIMINAL INTENT lives on in cable. Maybe a close out order for FNL.

I think NBC put Lipstick in ER's slot because they simply had nothing else for there. As for Medium, I don't think that would've been any better of a lead in than the Apprentice. In the end, I think NBC knows Lipstick has very slim chances of making it long term.

Ya, I was just referring to the fact MEDIUM had been pulled for the 4th and the JUNGLE ep on the 7th would miss some valuable promotion.

Great for the viewers, lousy for the promotion department. Pick any one show and note how many of the others can't be promoted on it.
On the other hand, though it may be harder to hit, they can hit with almost any type of show; almost nothing represents an outright breaking of the brand. I doubt Heroes would've been as big on CBS. Viva Laughlin was probably never going to work on CBS, even if it had been good, and things like Cane and WMC got some initial sampling, but were probably to some extent being sampled by the wrong people, because the promos had to make them seem closer to the nets' "brands" than they actually were.

Ditto on your first sentence, and it actually goes further than that. As well as CBS and ABC are doing, their heavy branding has left open a significant counter audience - which NBC has not exploited.
They moved in the right direction with the type of shows they looked at - unique, avant-garde - but ran into 3 obstacles: it's very tough to pick winners, it's very hard to find something that is truly high-concept, and ongoing production of such shows can be difficult.
I think their recent altering of the development process as they knew it was smart, because they were obviously in over their heads.

Those five low-rated hours of Figure Skating really killed NBC's weekly average (they would have placed a strong second without them).

I've already seen advertisements for Lipstick Jungle during Medium, but I think NBC's best form of advertising Lipstick Jungle would be during its editions of Deal Or No Deal. Its NBC's highest rated program and I bet DOND has a large enough female audience watching "Deal," that would be interested in LJ. Also, Lipstick Jungle is also a book series and the reviews for it are better than the reviews for Cashmere Mafia (but not by too much).

Gossip Girl is a book series and it had good TV reviews as well.

Without the 5 hours of skating, the demo would have been over 3. Of course, if we are just talking about replacing those 5 hours with something else that NBC had to offer, then yes, it probably wouldn't have improved the weekly demo much.

I'm wondering how much juice these 3 actresses have (left) in them.
I fear, not enough. But, we'll take a look.
