Has anyone been seeing the commercials for ABC Family’s newest series? The show is called The Secret Life of the American Teenager and it premieres July 1st.

The plot seems to focus on a pregnant teenager in high school, and how her pregnancy will affect her friends, family, and fellow students while they cope with their own drama. I think given the success of Juno, this show is really going to take off. Also, Molly Ringwald will be playing the pregnant teen's mom. I think she'll really help bring in a good following!

All I have to say is how does the show move after a baby is born in the first season?

Given the other products ABCFamily has put out (Kyle XY, Greek), I am not excited by this in the least.

Sorry for my delayed response! Busy week!

I read an article about the show, and I believe one of the thoughts is to spread the pregnancy across a few seasons. I agree, it will be interesting to see how they develop the plot from there, but with the slowed timeline, I think a lot of character development will really come about.

It has a great supporting cast Ernie Hudson from Ghostbusters, Josie Bissett from Melrose Place included. That's a lot of recognizable faces for many generations...could appeal to the masses...

I was excited about Molly Ringwald, but after seeing the trailers and the reviews for the show.... not all that interested anymore.

I am excited about Samurai Girl and am on pins and needles waiting for season 3 of Kyle XY.

Glad to see Molly. But it was crap. Brenda Hampton writing was weak. Alot of teens performances felt forced, no one says sex that much, 30 times in one pilot

I agree that the writing was weak and the performances were forced, but you can't really mean that they said "sex" too much. It's kind of hard to overdo that word when that's the entire plot! The entire show is based around the two teenagers having sex and getting pregnant.

ABC Family orders more 'Teenager'
Brings the total number of episodes to 23
By Nellie Andreeva and Kimberly Nordyke

July 17, 2008, 12:00 AM ET

ABC Family wants to know more about "The Secret Life of the American Teenager."

Network president Paul Lee is expected to announce Thursday at the TV Critics Assn. summer press tour that the drama series from Brenda Hampton has been picked up for 13 additional episodes three weeks into its run.

The order for the show, starring Shailene Woodley as a pregnant teen and Molly Ringwald as her mother, brings the total number of episodes to 23. One of the new segments will be added to the series' initial 10-episode episode run, which concludes Sept. 9. The remaining 12 episodes are tentatively scheduled to air starting in January.

In its three weeks on the air, "Teenager" has been growing, scoring series highs and network records this week in key demos. It ranks as ABC Family's most-watched original series ever among total viewers (2.7 million), adults 18-34 (821,000), adults 18-49 (1.2 million) and viewers 12-34 (1.8 million). On iTunes, all three episodes were the No. 1 most-downloaded TV programs the day after their respective premieres.

Separately, ABC Family is launching a 12-episode online series starring the Plain White T's later this month. "Meet Me in California" will document the behind-the-scenes process of the "Hey There Delilah" band recording their second major-label album. The series premieres July 30 at ABCFamily.com/plainwhitets, with new five-minute webisodes streaming every Wednesday through October.

Man Cdub missed a real potential hit here. A lot of people complain about Brenda Hampton and while I was not a fan of the final season of 7th Heaven, she does know how to attract the masses. Good for her.

Thanks for the link. Parsing the numbers it looks like 3.4 million of the 4.1 million viewers are female 12-49. Once you add in 2-12 female and 50+ female, I wonder if there were more than 100,000 total male viewers for the episode?

I'm sure ABC Family is perfectly happy with what they got.
