If there ever was a message sent to GSN this past week as to what the viewer and fan of the network desires, it was on Friday, when the channel ran a Viewer's Choice Marathon.
The game shows the viewers chose were mostly classics like GSN faves, Match Game and my all-time fave, Press Your Luck but the ones I haven't seen in almost 20 years were those I were most anxious to see: The Joker's Wild and Tic-Tac-Dough.
I also got to watch a quirky treat in what seems to be the original Deal or No Deal, entitled The New Treasure Hunt from the 1970s. The episode that aired was when a female contestant, after being teased that she only won one tire (as in a unicycle), then traded it in for two tires (a bicycle), then traded it in for four tires but got tied up by four guys with rope (get it: four tie-rs!). Finally she learned she really won the four tires attached to a 1937 Rolls Royce and fainted on the floor.
Also on Friday, GSN aired an episode of Tattletales which featured a then-little known actress from the daytime soap, "As The World Turns," Meg Ryan.
Now if only GSN airs on a daily basis, The Joker's Wild, Tic-Tac-Dough, The New Treasure Hunt, as well as never-before-seen game shows on the channel, the 1980s NBC version of $ale of the Century and Chuck Woolery's Scrabble, it might put my DVR into overdrive but I'd be happy in the process!
I remember a few years ago, GSN ran pilots of game shows that never made it to the air. Most were from the 70's and early 80's. David Letterman had one that he was great at hosting, but the game was pretty bad.
I wish they would do that a little more often or even have 1 hour on the weekend for such unseen classics,

I watched the game show marathon on Friday, and I agree with you Douglas, it was GSN at its finest. Bring back more of the retro gameshows instead of so many of todays gameshows which pale in comparison.

Do "we" know if the classic games or the newly produced games get better ratings?
Little info is given on the ratings for GSN, but I know that when they first were airing the "new" game shows Whammy, Friend or Foe, That Show were people dropped through the ground and Lingo, only Lingo did as well as the classics. However, the reason they continue to try the new stuff is that they want a younger demo as the classics have only skewed older viewers. If this was working, I'm sure we'd be hearing about it.

As far as I can tell, the only things that seem to be working with younger demos on GSN are the poker/blackjack shows, which now are pretty much limited to Monday nights. The attempts at reality and relationship shows bombed out. They stole the World Poker Tour from Travel and we'll see how that affects things.
And it has to be realized that the "Viewer's Choice Marathon" was based on an online poll, which is as unscientific as you can get. It is just gonig to be difficult for them to get a 1.0 in households, let alone the money demos.
