Would the networks ever consider airing pilots during a "pilot month" for everyone to watch and judge and then turn around an only take the well received pilots?

It does seem like we are already halfway there with backdoor pilots like Knight Rider and Private Practice. But rather than relying on backroom viewings, focus groups and crossed fingers, why not put it all out there and see if it catches fire?

Your idea would be a good way to avoid Reruns in March. the drawback would be that some shows would air a pilot that would make later casting changes harder to cover up.

Side note: I read that Knight Rider might be held for mid-season so it could premiere out of the Superbowl. Can I mark my contest entry for biggest failure of the 2008-2009 TV season now?

Back in the early days of TV - or perhaps just in the 70's and 80's, this was a common practice where the networks did air these shows. Although in this case, they were already discarded pilots that didn't have any hope of making it to the air and were just shown in the summer.

I do think that your idea is a good one though - perhaps a great one for the CW to try. You do run the risk of a face lift / casting changes etc... , but heck, that's been done on a lot of shows anyhow where minor characters were replaced after the pilot and a good majority of the CW viewers are high anyhow and wouldn't even catch that their were changes.

I never understood why they DON'T do this already -- they could set up one week in April as "pilot week" and air all their pilots...

I personally think that instead of 1 pilot episode a show should get 4 episodes. The effort has already been put into casting the show and sometimes it takes more than 1 episode to decide how good a show is.
