On a revenue per primetime hour basis, I wouldn't be surprised to see CW come out ahead, but on a total basis, it is hard to believe Adage's numbers.
The CW amount in the pdf article is incorrect. The CW’s total last year was approx. $660 and it is expected to decline 15% to $560 million per the
ad age article.
Thanks. $560million makes more sense. Is that for 10hours of primetime or for 13 (still including Sunday)?
$560million/10hrs = 56million per hour for CW.
$560million/13hrs = 43million per hour for CW.
NBC has 21 or 22 hours of primetime every week.
$1,800million/21hrs = 86million per hour for NBC.
$1,800million/22hrs = 82million per hour for NBC.
So, NBC ad space sells for 1.5 to 2.0 times what CW does per hour. Meanwhile, NBC has 3.25 times as many viewers and 2.75 times the demo as CW. Clearly , CW is doing something right with respect to running a network. The key here may be in the 18-34 demo where NBC has about 2 times the number of viewers as CW; in line with the ad rate ratio.
CW's biggest problem isn't with the curreent ratings, but with the ability to develop shows that will last long enough for syndication. Profits are best made when you are selling something over and over again that you have no significant additional costs on.
