IMO, any list if “best shows” which includes “Class Of 3000 Cartoon Network Friday” near the top invites some careful scrutiny before being taken seriously.
(Listed below are the “publications” listed whose reviews are somehow graded, weighted and then blended for the Metacritic score.)
What a joke.
Perhaps MC could have just used members of the Television Critics’ Association? It sure has left some time-flight TV writers off the list (but then it must reserve room for flak, IGN, Amazon.com, the Onion AV Club, Pop Matters, Paste Magazine, Slant, TVShowsOnDVD.com, UndertheRadar and a host of others who review TV occasionally.
That left an awful lot of highly respected, thoughtful and veteran critics whose votes aren’t counted. Critics who have to watch every TV show, not just ones they think their audience might want to hear about – or laugh about some new show.
So, as far as Metaceritic is concerned, there is no input from Ed Bark (long-time critic of the Dallas Morning News), Marc Berman of MediaWeek, Walt Belcher of the Tampa Tribune, Peter Ames Carlin of the Portland Oregonian, Rich Heldenfels of the Akron Beacon-Journal, Diane Holloway of the Austin Herald-Statesman, Virginia Rohan of the Bergen Record, Dusty Saunder of the Deseret News, Joanne Ostrow of the Denver Post, Rick Kushman of the Sacramento Bee, Susan Young of the Oakland Tribune, Dave Walker of the New Orleans Times-Picayune -- and the list goes on and on.
Leaving those respected voices off a “poll” of TV reviewers (not to mention including some – at best -- third-rate or fly-by-night organizations) makes such a poll too useless even to start a debate.
