Lifetime Television introduced a star-studded lineup of projects when it announced its upcoming slate of programs, premiering Monday, May 14 with the Lifetime Original Movie, "What if God Were the Sun?," starring GENA ROWLANDS and LACEY CHABERT in a story about a cynical emergency room nurse who forms a connection with a terminally ill patient that changes her life.
Of course, Lifetime Television is well-known for its Original Movies, but this summer, the network goes where no other basic cable network has gone before when it launches three new dramas for the same night of the week in the same season.
On June 3, the lynchpin of the three new Sunday night series, "Army Wives," starring KIM DELANEY and CATHERINE BELL, will premiere at 10 p.m. "Army Wives" is set on a military post in the South and focuses on an eclectic group of women from very different worlds who join together with a common bond.
Bell, who is no stranger to the military, having played a "JAG" lawyer for many years, told reporters, "I spent a lot of time on military bases, but the most touching thing was when I would meet the wives and their families. We were at Camp Pendleton one year, and all of these families came out to watch us film -- women and two, three, sometimes four children. And, you know, their husbands had been away for six, eight, nine months. I just remember being so moved by their lives and their strength and what it must be like to live on that base and deal with that."
"Army Wives" will be joined on Sunday, July 15, when "Side Order of Life," starring MARISA COUGHLAN and JASON PRIESTLEY, debuts at 8 p.m. It is about a reporter (Coughlan) who receives a wake-up call from the universe as she is about to marry. It will be followed at 9 p.m. by "State of Mind," starring LILI TAYLOR as a brilliant therapist dealing with personal problems and eclectic patients.
Each year, Lifetime Television entertains its audience with its aforementioned slate of original movies. This year is no exception. In addition to "What if God Were the Sun?," the network will present "Write & Wrong," starring KIRSTIE ALLEY as a middle-aged screenwriter who is all washed up in Hollywood, and gets the bright idea of passing off her 20-year-old nephew as the writer of her scripts. Of course, the plan doesn't go off without a hitch. "Write & Wrong" premieres Sunday, June 3 at 8 p.m.
Also on the movie slate for the summer is "Girl, Positive," starring "Desperate Housewives" teen queen ANDREA BOWEN, JENNIE GARTH and S. EPATHA MERKERSON in a story about a high school senior who fears she may be infected with the HIV virus.
"All of these projects, shepherded by my very talented programming team, represent various aspects of the contemporary woman. Whether it's a drama set on an Army post or a reality series that makes women look at themselves in a different way, each of these series embraces the emotional roller coaster that women ride -- the ups and downs of a woman's career, love life, child-rearing and friendship. We believe they all reflect the bold programming direction this network is taking," said Entertainment President SUSANNE DANIELS.
Also in the works for the basic cable network is a series based on TERI HATCHER's book, Burnt Toast, and a reality series to star former "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy"'s style guru CARSON KRESSLEY, titled, "How to Look Good Naked."
