Note: Any prior rating results are based on the final nationals. Since the level of DVR penetration has increased from 20 percent at this same point last year to approximately 28 percent at present, the overall results may be negatively impacted.
-Losing Steam: Deal or No Deal (NBC), Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (Fox), Supernanny (ABC)
-Friday’s Losers (excluding repeats): Wife Swap (ABC), Everybody Hates Chris (CW), The Game (CW), The Ex List (CBS), Crusoe (NBC), Life (NBC)
----------
-Ratings Breakdown: It was a typically uneventful Friday, with CBS’ combination of Ghost Whisperer (Viewers: #1, 9.95 million; A18-49: #1, 2.5 rating/9 share), week four of The Ex List (Viewers: #2, 5.65 million; A18-49: #2t, 1.6/ 5) and Numb3rs (Viewers: #1, 9.07 million; A18-49: #1t, 2.2/ 7) first overall in both total viewers and adults 18-49. But the alarm bells should be ringing for The Ex List, which sunk to a series low and dropped by 930,000 viewers (6.11 to 5.18 million) and 12 percent among adults 18-49 (1.7/ 5 to 1.5/ 5) at 9:30 p.m. Ghost Whisperer was the most-watched show and highest rated in the demo for the evening (and it did not even crack 10 million viewers). And Numb3rs lands in the winner’s listing for building out of The Ex List by double-digit percentages.
NBC finished second overall in total viewers and tied for third among adults 18-49 (with Fox) with its line-up of the relocated Deal or No Deal (Viewers: #2, 6.04 million; A18-49: #2, 1.4/ 5), week two of Crusoe (Viewers: #1, 5.92 million; A18-49: #4, 1.2/ 4) and Life (Viewers: #3, 5.49 million; A18-49: #3, 1.5/ 5). Sad, isn’t it, that the Crusoe was the most-watched show at 9 p.m. and it averaged under six million viewers? Week-to-week, Crusoe dipped by 1.46 million viewers (7.38 to 5.92 million) and 25 percent among adults 18-49 (1.6/ 5 to 1.2/ 4). Life, meanwhile, built from Crusoe in the demo, but year-ago occupant Las Vegas was a stronger option. For more on Life, see TV Tidbits below.
ABC also had little of note on Friday as a result of Wife Swap (Viewers: #4, 4.22 million; A18-49: #3, 1.3/ 5), Supernanny (Viewers: #4, 5.08 million; A18-49: #1, 1.7/ 5) and 20/20 (Viewers: #2, 7.51 million; A18-49: #1t, 2.2/ 7). Growth for Superanny out of Wife Swap of 860,000 viewers and 31 percent among adults 18-49 keeps it off the loser’s list. But year-to-year both Wife Swap and Supernanny remain down by considerable proportions. If I were programming ABC, I would consider a Disney Channel themed Friday night rotation of sitcoms like Hannah Montana and The Suite Life of Zack and Cody (with wrap around commentary from the young series stars). Remember how long ABC’s TGIF block lasted?
Fox, meanwhile, had nothing to boast about with non-scripted duo Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (Viewers: #3. 5.71 million; A18-49: #4, 1.2/ 4) and Don’t Forget the Lyrics (Viewers: #2, 5.56 million; A18-49: #2t, 1.6/ 5), which should move back to Thursday before more damage is done. And the CW could not compete with its combination of Everybody Hates Chris (Viewers: #5, 1.83 million; A18-49: #5, 0.7/ 2), The Game (Viewers: #5, 1.74 million; A18-49: #5, 0.7/ 2) and a repeat of America’s Top Model (Viewers: #5, 1.22 million; A18-49: #5, 0.5/ 2). No one ever said replacing Friday Night Smackdown! would be easy.

-Saturday’s Winners: College Football: Penn State vs. Ohio State (ABC)
-Saturday’s Losers (excluding repeats): America’s Toughest Jobs (NBC), The World Series, Game 3: Philadelphia vs. Tampa Bay (Fox), 48 Hours Mystery (CBS)
----------
-Ratings Breakdown: ABC took center stage on this sports-fueled Saturday, with the College Football match-up between Penn State and Ohio State at an estimated 9.43 million viewers and a 3.2 rating/10 share among adults 18-49 in prime-time. Keep in mind, of course, that results for any live sporting event are always approximate. As I always say, viewers will respond on Saturday with the right programming options.
The World Series on Fox, unfortunately, took a hit opposite football, with game three of Philadelphia versus Tampa Bay at an estimated 7.29 million viewers and a 2.1/ 7 among adults 18-49 for the prime-time portion from 8-11 p.m. While this is an improvement over the regularly scheduled Cops and America’s Most Wanted, this could be an historical low for the World Series. Ouch!
CBS finished third overall in total viewers and adults 18-49 with its combination of a repeat of NCIS (Viewers: #2, 6.92 million; A18-49: #3, 1.4/ 5), a repeat of Without a Trace (Viewers: #2, 7.29 million; A18-49: #3, 1.4/ 4) and the long-running 48 Hours Mystery (Viewers: #3, 6.20 million; A18-49: #4, 1.3/ 4), which could not hold the lead-in. And NBC capped off the evening with reality/competition America’s Toughest Jobs (Viewers: #4, 3.07 million; A18-49: #4, 0.7/ 2), a repeat of The Office (Viewers: #4, 2.13 million; A18-49: #4, 0.6/ 2), and the three repeat episodes of SNL Weekend Update, which aired for three consecutive Thursdays (Viewers: #3, 5.25 million; A18-49: #3, 1.9/ 6 from 9:30-11 p.m.). Poor NBC!

-Double Digit Losses from One Year Earlier: World Series, Game 4: Philadelphia vs. Tampa Bay (Fox)
-Disappointing: The Unit (CBS)
-Yesterday’s Losers (excluding repeats) Football Night in America (NBC), In Harm’s Way (CW), Movie: The 40 Year-Old Virgin (NBC), Valentine (CW), Easy Money (CW)
----------
-Ratings Breakdown: Sports-driven Fox capped off the week on a winning note, with its combination of an approximate half-hour Football overrun (#1: 15.8/28 at 7 p.m.), post game The OT (#1: 11.9/20 at 7:30 p.m.), the approximate half-hour World Series pre-game (#1: 9.7/16 at 8 p.m.), and game four of Philadelphia versus Tampa Bay on The World Series (11.0/17 for the prime-time portion from 8:30-11 p.m.). Comparably, game four of the Boston/Colorado match-up on Fox on Sunday, Oct. 28, 2007 averaged a much heftier 13.9/21 in overnights. Do the math, and last night’s game was down by 21 percent. As a reminder, results for any live sport event are approximate.
ABC and CBS tied for second behind Fox in the overnights, but ABC will clearly have the advantage among adults 18-49 with its combination of America’s Funniest Home Videos (#3: 5.0/ 8), Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (#2: 7.3/12), Desperate Housewives (#2 10.4/14) and Brothers & Sisters (#2: 7.2/12). Year-to-year, however, ABC remains on the downside at an average loss of 11 percent. CBS declined by a similar 10 percent in the overnights with its line-up of 60 Minutes (#2: 9.4/15), The Amazing Race (#3: 6.1/10), Cold Case (#3: 8.1/12) and male-driven The Unit (#3: 6.4/10), which clearly lost some steam opposite The World Series. With few holes on its current line-up, The Unit could be vulnerable.
Football-less NBC scored what could be its lowest Sunday in the history of the network, with its combination of Football Night in America (#4: 2.1/ 4 from 7-8 p.m.) and a cleaned up version of 2005 theatrical The 40 Year-Old Virgin (3.1/ 5 from 8-10:30 p.m.) and a repeat of The Office (#4: 2.0/ 3 at 10:30 p.m.). Call me crazy, but what was the point of airing Football Night in America if there was no Sunday Night Football game?
As for the CW, add up the three Media Rights Capital produced shows -- In Harm’s Way (#5: 0.5/ 1), Valentine (#5: 0.8/ 1) and Easy Money (#4: 0.4/ 1) -- and you still have a flop. At some point, the CW would be better off giving back Sunday to the affiliates. Time sharing or not, this is a total embarrassment!

Ratings Box: What’s Hot/What’s Not
-Sluggish 2008 Baseball World Series: Two games into the Philadelphia/Tampa Bay match-up on Fox, The World Series is down from the comparable year-ago Colorado versus Boston series to-date (also on Fox) by 3.22 million viewers (16.92 to 13.70 million) and percent among adults 18-49 (5.6 rating/16 share vs. 4.8/13).
-Syndicated Talk – Season to-Date Update: Six weeks into the 2008-09 season (9/01 – 10/12/08), here are the household rating results in syndicated talk (with change versus the comparable year-ago period in parentheses). Two shows to-date, Ellen DeGeneres from Warner Bros. and The Morning Show With Mike & Juliet from Twentieth Television are on the plus side. But the real surprise, and it is not a good one, is CBS’ Television Distribution’s Dr. Phil. Although Dr. Phil still ranks second in the genre behind Queen Oprah, year-to-year it’s down by a hefty 29 percent. NBC Universal’s Martha has also dropped significantly, at a household loss of 30 percent. And, no, that’s not “a good thing.” Take a look:
Oprah (CBS Television Distribution): 4.8 rating (-11), Dr. Phil (CBS): 3.2 (-29), Live With Regis & Kelly (Disney-ABC): 2.5 (-17), Ellen DeGeneres Show (Warner Bros.): 2.0 (+ 5), Rachael Ray (CBS): 1.6 (-16), Maury (NBC Universal): 1.6 (-11), The Doctors (CBS): 1.3, Tyra Banks (Warner Bros.): 1.1 (no change), Jerry Springer (NBCU): 0.9 (-31), The Morning Show With Mike & Juliet (Twentieth Television): 0.9 (+13), Steve Wilkos Show (NBCU): 0.9 (no change), Bonnie Hunt (Warner Bros.): 0.8, Martha (NBCU): 0.7 (-30)

-NBC Reshuffles Wednesday and Friday: NBC has announced changes to its Wednesday and Friday line-ups, including the return of veteran Law & Order and new time periods for dramas Life and Lipstick Jungle. Law & Order will move into the Wednesday 10 p.m. hour, with season No. 19 scheduled to begin on Nov. 5. Current occupant Lipstick Jungle will head to Friday at 10 p.m. (behind Crusoe) on Oct. 31. Sophomore Life, currently airing Friday at 10 p.m. will relocate to Wednesday at 9 p.m. on Nov. 5 (out of Knight Rider and into Law & Order). While there is every reason to believe Law & Order will breathe some life into Wednesday, do not unfortunately expect too much for Life or Lipstick Jungle.
Also at NBC, the debut of reality/relationship hour Momma’s Boys from Ryan Seacrest has been pushed back to Tuesday, Dec. 16 at 10 p.m. after the season-finale of The Biggest Loser. On Monday, Dec. 22 Momma’s Boys moves to 9 p.m. in place Heroes, which will go on a brief winter hiatus.

You know an 11% dip for ABC ain't bad at all in this TV world. With DVRs and the strike and just general show age, much larger dips could've happened (see ABC Wed.) so they should be pretty happy with these results. Plus, last night's Housewives was pretty darn good and I'm more curious than ever to find out what the hell is up with Edie's husband.
TAR, on the other hand, continues to be a disappointment creatively this year. You would think one could find a likable pair out of this bunch. I feel like the reason I'm watching each week is to yell at the divorced b**ches who made it clear why they're divorced in week one. I do like the mother-son character but they're nothing special. Ken and Tina haven't been as annoying lately either, although previews will made it appears as if I'll have to eat those words next Monday morning.

Call me crazy, but what was the point of airing Football Night in America if there was no Sunday Night Football game?
My guess would be that by airing the program, NBC continues it's fall pattern of having a sustaining unrated half-hour (7-7:30pm), unless the full hour was sustaining. This would make the night less worse than it actually was.

At the very least, 'Valentine' deserves some recognition for being the first MRC program to show some week-to-week growth...it went up 14% week-over-week in the metered markets, and that's a first-time achievement for MRC on Sundays. If this growth pattern is maintained in the FAST Nationals, perhaps Marc might consider classifying 'Valentine' as "Showing Promise" in his daily Programming Insider report.

And therefore, we'll be hearing about how they should bring it back in the summer for those unscheduled episodes for the next three years or how CBS should put them on Saturdays for a fresh alternative. Just like we've been hearing how ABC should waste space in its current lineup with burn off of cancelled shows no one liked a year ago. Oh but how s/he will spin of the great average that Cavemen pulled and how it was higher than Opportunity Knocks when in reality, only about 4 million people were watching Cavemen too at its end. Its all a fun delusional game.
What are they going to air after these shows end their 13 episode runs?

They should air repeats of Moonlight followed by repeats of Moonlighting.
