Prime-Time Ratings:
Weekend Highlights

Friday 10/03/08
Note: The following results are based on the fast affiliate ratings (Live Plus Same Day data).

HH
Rtg/Shr
CBS 5.3/10
ABC 3.4/ 6
Fox 3.3/ 6
NBC 3.3/ 6
CW 1.1/ 2

-Total Viewers:
CBS: 8.10 million, Fox: 5.11, NBC: 5.04, ABC: 4.91, CW: 1.74

-Adults 18-49:
CBS: 2.2 rating/7 share, ABC: 1.5/ 5, NBC and Fox: 1.4/ 4 each, CW: 0.7/ 2

--------------------

Note: Any prior rating results are based on the final nationals. Since the level of DVR penetration has increased from 20 percent at this same point last year to approximately 28 percent at present, the overall results may be negatively impacted.

----------

-Friday’s Winners:
Ghost Whisperer (CBS)

-Down but Not Out:
Numb3rs (CBS)

-Disappointing:
The Ex List (CBS), Supernanny (ABC), Don’t Forget the Lyrics (Fox)

-Friday’s Losers (excluding repeats):
Wife Swap (ABC), America’s Toughest Jobs (NBC), Everybody Hates Chris (CW), The Game (CW), Life (NBC)

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS led this very uneventful second Friday of the 2008-09 season, with a first-place finish in households, total viewers and adults 18-49. Even so, barely 8 million viewers and a mere 2.2 rating/ 7 share in the demo is nothing to boast about. Since last Friday featured the first presidential debate, this week included one series-premiere (CBS’ The Ex List) and six season premieres on the evening. The biggest loser was the CW, which is now paying the price for letting old faithful Friday Night Smackdown! slip out of its hands.

The fourth season-premiere of CBS’ Ghost Whisperer won the 8 p.m. hour, with 9.31 million viewers and a 2.5 rating/9 share among adults 18-49 -- the most-watched show and highest rated in the demo of the evening. Compared to one year earlier (Viewers: 8.91 million; A18-49: 2.5/ 9 on Oct. 5, 2007) that was an increase of 400,000 viewers. In the battle of the three non-scripted programs from 8-9 p.m., Fox’s Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? had the advantage, delivering more viewers than the fifth season-premiere of ABC’s relocated Wife Swap and squashing America’s Toughest Jobs on NBC, which is moving Saturday at 8 p.m. on Oct. 18. Take a look:

Friday 8 p.m.
Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (Fox)
Viewers: 5.81 million (#2), A18-49: 1.3/ 5 (#2t)

Wife Swap (ABC) – season premiere
Viewers: 3.76 million (#3), A18-49: 1.3/ 5 (#2t)

America’s Toughest Jobs (NBC)
Viewers: 3.42 million (#4), A18-49: 1.0/ 3 (#4)

Needless to say, this was a massive loss of audience for Wife Swap compared to last season. Last, and very least, were the season-premieres of the CW’s relocated Everybody Hates Chris (Viewers: 2.10 million; A18-49: 0.8/ 3), which has completely lost its creative juice, and The Game (Viewers: 1.91 million; A18-49: 0.8/ 3). The CW should never have let Smackdown! move to MyNetworkTV.

The series-premiere of CBS’ The Ex List won the 9 p.m. hour, with 6.85 million viewers and a 2.0/ 6 among adults 18-49. But the retention out of lead-in Ghost Whisperer was disappointing at 74 percent in total viewers and 80 percent in the demo. Failed year-ago occupant Moonlight was stronger at 8.04 million viewers and a 2.2/ 7 among adults 18-49 on Oct. 5, 2007. And slippage in the second half hour was 720,000 viewers (7.21 to 6.49 million) and five percent in the demo (2.1/ 7 to 2.0/ 6). While The Ex List did dominate, it was a disappointment and proves just how troubled Friday night is.

Second overall in the 9 p.m. hour was NBC’s Deal or No Deal (Viewers: 6.26 million; A18-49: 1.5/ 5), which is not benefiting by revealing what happens later in the game (is this idiotic, or what?), followed by the fifth season-premiere of ABC’s relocated Supernanny and Fox’s Don’t Forget the Lyrics, which tied for the No. 3 and 4 spots. Take a look:

Friday 9 p.m.
Supernanny (ABC) – season premiere
Viewers: 4.20 million (#4), A18-49: 1.5/ 5 (#3)

Don’t Forget the Lyrics (Fox)
Viewers: 4.41 million (#3), A18-49: 1.4/ 4 (#4)

Although growth for Supernanny out of Wife Swap of 440,000 viewers and 15 percent among adults 18-49 keeps it off the loser’s list, this is still considerably below its performance from last season. And Don’t Forget the Lyrics is a disappointment too. Capping off the 9 p.m. hour was a repeat of the CW’s America’s Next Top Model (which does not play well in encores like the network says) at 1.49 million viewers and a 0.7/ 2 among adults 18-49.

CBS remained the top-rated network at 10 p.m., with the fifth season-premiere of Numb3rs at 8.13 million viewers and a 2.1/ 7 among adults 18-49. But one year earlier, the results were considerably stronger at 9.76 million viewers and a 2.8/ 9 in the demo. Next was ABC’s veteran 20/20 (Viewers: 6.81 million; A18-49: 1.9/ 6), followed by the time period-premiere of NBC’s Life at 5.44 million viewers and a 1.7/ 5 in the demo. Comparably, Life dipped from former occupant Las Vegas (Viewers: 7.48 million; A18-49: 2.2/ 7 on Oct. 5, 2007) by 2.04 million viewers and 23 percent in the demo. The network would have been better off bringing Las Vegas back.

The unfortunate reality of Friday is the growing similarities to Saturday, which the Big 3 no longer cares about. Let’s just hope that the networks do not also eventually give up on Friday.

Saturday 10/04/08
Note: The following results are based on the fast affiliate ratings (Live Plus Same Day data).

HH
Rtg/Shr
CBS 4.2/ 8
ABC 3.4/ 6
Fox 3.0/ 5
NBC 2.1/ 4

-Total Viewers:
ABC: 5.70 million, Fox: 5.35, CBS: 4.38, NBC: 4.31

-Adults 18-49:
Fox: 1.9 rating/6 share, ABC: 1.7/ 6, CBS: 1.5/ 5, NBC: 1.1/ 4

----------

Note: Any prior rating results are based on the final nationals. Since the level of DVR penetration has increased from 20 percent at this same point last year to approximately 28 percent at present, the overall results may be negatively impacted.

----------

-Saturday’s Winners:
Nothing

-Saturday’s Losers (excluding repeats):
48 Hours Mystery (CBS), CBS Elitexc Saturday Night Fights and, of course, the night overall. It is just pathetic!

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
Once again, there was little of note on this typically lackluster Saturday (yawn!), with football populated ABC the most-watched network and Fox, the home of Cops and America’s Most Wanted, No. 1 among adults 18-49. Saturday Night Football on ABC averaged 5.70 million viewers and a second-place 1.7 rating/6 share among adults 18-49 from 8-11 p.m. As a reminder, results for any live sporting event are always approximate. Cops (original and repeat – Viewers: #1, avg. 4.92 million; A18-49: #1, avg. 1.8/ 6 from 8-9 p.m.) and America’s Most Wanted (Viewers: #1, 5.92 million; A18-49: #1, 2.0/ 7) were, meanwhile, at typical levels. But worth noting for America’s Most Wanted was growth out of Cops of one million viewers and 11 percent in the demo.

CBS opened the evening with an early edition of 48 Hours Mystery below average at 4.53 million viewers (#3) and a 1.0/ 4 (#3) among adults 18-49 from 8-9 p.m. That led into the return of CBS Elitexc Saturday Night Fights at a mere 4.30 million viewers and a 1.8/ 6 among adults 18-49 from 9-11 p.m. Tale a look at the half-hour breakdown:

CBS Elitexc Saturday Night Fights
9:00 p.m. – Viewers: 3.53 million (#4), A18-49: 1.3/ 4 (#3)
9:30 p.m. – Viewers: 4.48 million (#3), A18-49: 1.9/ 6 (#2)
10:00 p.m. – Viewers: 4.37 million (#3), A18-49: 1.9/ 6 (#1)
10:30 p.m. – Viewers: 4.84 million (#3), A18-49: 2.2/ 7 (#1)

Needless to say, the haphazard scheduling of CBS Elitexc Saturday Night Fights has not been a positive.

Cellar-dweller NBC capped off deadly dull Saturday with two repeat episodes of Knight Rider (Viewers: #4, avg. 3.82 million; A18-49: avg. 1.0/ 4 from 8-10 p.m.) and a repeat of Law & Order: SVU (Viewers: #2, 5.28 million; A18-49: #3, 1.3/ 4 at 10 p.m.). What a night!

CBS 9.2/14
NBC 7.5/12
ABC 7.4/12
Fox 3.9/ 6
CW 0.8/ 1

-Percent Change From the Year-Ago Evening (Sunday, October 7, 2007):
CBS: + 6, Fox: - 9, ABC: -10, NBC: -24, CW: -27

----------

-Yesterday’s Winners:
Football Overrun (CBS), 60 Minutes (CBS), Sunday Night Football: Pittsburgh Steelers at Jacksonville Jaguars (NBC), Desperate Housewives (ABC)

-Yesterday’s Losers (excluding repeats)
In Harm’s Way (CW), Valentine (CW), Easy Money (CW) -- absolutely horrific!

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS led the Sunday overnights troops, beating football-ignited NBC by an average of 23 percent. But keep in mind that all individual program results for CBS are approximate due to an estimated half-hour football overrun at 7 p.m. ET. One-tenth of a rating point behind NBC was ABC, following by Fox and minuscule the CW, which looks like it sunk to an historical Sunday low despite a night of season premieres (all produced by Media Rights Capital). Don’t forget that eight markets – New York, Detroit, Boston, Houston, Washington, D.C., Providence, Dayton and Ft. Myers -- are excluded from the following averages.

Since the CW debuted its new Sunday line-up, let me start with them. But you may want to sit down first. Reality series In Harm’s Way opened the evening with a mere 0.6 rating/1 share in the overnights from 7-8 p.m. One year earlier, failed magazines CW Now (0.8/ 1) and Online Nation (0.6/ 1) averaged a 0.7/ 1 on Oct. 7, 2007. Next was the premiere of the scripted Valentine at a 1.0/ 1 at 8 p.m. -- 23 percent below year-ago failed occupant Life is Wild (1.3/ 2). Maybe Life is Wild was not so bad after all! And the premiere of drama Easy Money dropped to a 0.7/ 1 at 9 p.m. -- 46 percent below a repeat of America’s Next Top Model on the year-ago evening (1.3/ 2). Needless to say, last-place the CW must be hiding under the table today. What an embarrassment!

An approximate half-hour football overrun on CBS kicked-off the evening for the Eye net at a dominant 14.3/24 in the overnights in the 7 p.m. half-hour. Next was old faithful 60 Minutes at a first-place 11.4/18 from 7:30-8:30 p.m., followed by The Amazing Race 13 (#3: 7.4/11 from 8:30-9:30 p.m.), Cold Case (#3, 7.7/12 from 9:30-10:30 p.m.) and The Unit, with a 6.4/11 in the 10:30 p.m. half-hour. Retention for the first half of The Unit out of the second half of lead-in Cold Case (8.0/12) was 79 percent.

NBC’s Football Night in America pre-game opened at a third-place 3.4/ 8 in the overnights from 7-8 p.m., followed by the 8-8:30 p.m. portion at a 5.9/10 (also No. 3). The Pittsburgh Steelers at Jacksonville Jaguars followed with an approximate (and dominant) 10.8/17 for the prime-time (8:30-11 p.m.) portion.

Over at ABC was the season-premiere of veteran America’s Funniest Home Videos (#2, 5.3/ 9), which was seven percent below it’s year-ago season-opener (5.7/10 on Oct. 7, 2007), followed by Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (#2: 7.2/11), Desperate Housewives (#2: 9.9/15) and Brothers & Sisters (#2: 7.2/12). Compared to one year earlier, Desperate Housewives and Brothers & Sisters were down by 12 percent and 18 percent, respectively.

Fox, meanwhile, had what you would call a typical performance in the Sunday overnights with its animated combination of two repeat episodes of King of the Hill (#4: avg. 2.7/ 5 from 7-8 p.m.), The Simpsons (#4: 4.6/ 7), the regularly scheduled original edition of King of the Hill (#4: 4.2/ 6), Family Guy (#4: 5.1/ 8) and American Dad (#4: 3.9/ 6), Look for the arrivals of Family Guy spin-off The Cleveland Show and Sit Down, Shut Up in midseason.

What’s Hot/What’s Not

-Red Hot SNL on NBC:
Veteran Saturday Night Live remains a rare growing force on NBC, with the October 4th telecast (with host Anne Hathaway) at a hefty 7.4 rating/18 share in the metered markets. Comparably, that was an increase of 42 percent over the fourth original telecast of last season (7.4/18 to 5.2/12). And it was its second highest-rated overnight performance since Dec. 14, 2002. Through the first four weeks of this season, SNL is up by 49 percent in the metered markets from one year earlier (6.7/16 vs. 4.5/11).

-Above Average Nightline on ABC:
Based on ratings for the week of Sept. 22, ABC News’ Nightline rose to 4.06 million viewers -- its biggest audience since re-launching in November 2005. Comparably, that was an increase of nine percent from one year earlier. Nightline also outdelivered CBS’ The Late Show with David Letterman for the fifth consecutive week in total viewers and adults 25-54, building by five percent in the demo (1.84 million) compared to the year-ago week and narrowing the gap from NBC’s The Tonight Show with Jay Leno by 69 percent in the demo and 55 percent in total viewers.

Save 'In Harm's Way'.

Save 'Valentine'.

Save 'Easy Money'.

I won't even ask how those Easyview '4Real' episodes did.

Is it possible the numbers are understated by virtue of eight major metered markets being excluded from the overnight roll-up?

My heart goes out to the creators, talent, MRC and The CW. They put a lot of hard work into getting those shows ready, and they should be very proud of what they put up on the screen. For some reason that I cannot fathom, viewers just won't tune into The CW on Sundays (save for 'Reba').

1. CW has no reason to 'hide under a table', since it was MRC's night. MRC paid CW a set fee for the lease space. Therefore, CW made money on the night.

2. All of your HH/share numbers for CW are above the final numbers from last year, so I will wait for the real numbers and compare the %drop with the percent drop other networks experienced on the night before thinking that even MRC should 'hide under the table'.

3. MRC is a brand new player in the TV game. Just like any other 'newbie' it will take time to try and build a following, especially when tv addicts won't even sample the shows based on nothing more than the TV dial location.

obveeus, do you work for MRC?

I'm just wondering what will MRC do with these shows. I suppose they cannot be canceled after 2-3 episodes beacause what you put in their place?

Not to mention, the CW has done fairly little advertising for these shows and they don't in any way relate to the networks other programming so there isn't much in terms of crossover programming. MRC needs to do a better job themselves of getting the word out on other nets where the older audiences are watching.

Exactly, the shows will likely stay on the air. MRC could go to all cable style international syndication fare(I think that is what 4Real qualifies as), but it will likely be better for them to just keep the night fairly stable over the next few months. As a new entitty trying to break into the business, MRC doesn't seem to be taking the approach of having to break even or make money right out of the gate in order to survive. I know that people here like to predict instant doom for all the fledgling 'networks', but the people behind these entities have long term goals.

I think that make money right away strategy is why the CW was struggling so much so early. They were really quite cheap in choosing which shows should come over. Had they taken on a few more programs and taken a chance on some of the more mediocre shows like One on One, Half and Half, etc, they may have found more of the old WB/UPN viewers crossing over. I always felt a Sunday lineup filled with 6 returning African American comedies would've been the way to go.

I don't really think that the answer was to bring over more of the old programming, but they definitely should have had more programming. The CW needed more shows than they brought to their debut and they are still not bringing enough firstrun programming to the air. All but closing down for several summers in a row was not the way to run a network. They would have been better off having all firstrun programming over those summers when they had the best shot of capturing some additional audience. For all the poo-pooing of MRC, they at least seem to know that they will need to spend money before making money.

LIN TV and Time Warner Cable still in a standoff, so some networks are off the TWC systems (like CBS in Indianapolis). People need to rush forward and play the PIF daily game here ( http://pifeedback.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/26810349/m/687107361 )
so that Douglas will release the local market data on Indianapolis (and maybe some other markets where major networks are now yanked from the cable systems). Wouldn't it be nice to see how many people simply gave up on CBS because it wasn't on their cable system vs how many people switched to the over-the-air signal?

I wouldn't know how to do that even if I wanted to. I've never gotten over-air programming in my lifetime and I'm not exactly young.

You would also need to know what percentage of the Indy market gets their local channels through satellite service to make a fair assessment.

So, if your cable goes out you read a book? Now (especially qwith the digital changeover occurring in February next year) is a good time to get an antenna prepared for at least one TV in your home.

According to this article:

Time Warner cable in Indianapolis has 115,000 subscribers...and the cable company gave out 50,000 antennas to them over the weekend.

I have basic cable (to get a deal through comcast for phone and internet)and satellite service, so it's never been a problem. I would just never think of using rabbit ears unless someone suggested it to me. I didn't even realize that you could still just plug a television into the wall and receive more than your one crappy local channel.

And yep, if I had no TV then I would find other things to do. Reading is a very pleasant alternative. Until I got a DVR I would sometimes go for weeks without even turning the tv set on. The only reason we still had a TV sets was for DVDs and video games and the occasional favourite or sports programming. Now that I can watch what I want when I want and skip the commercials, I watch a lot more TV.
