Note: Any prior rating results are based on the final nationals. Since the level of DVR penetration has increased from 13 percent at this same point last year to approximately 23 percent at present, the overall results may be negatively impacted.
----------
-Friday’s Winners: 20/20 (ABC)
-Friday’s Losers (excluding repeats): The ALMA Awards (ABC)
----------
-Ratings Breakdown: Fox finished first in total viewers and adults 18-49 with its combination of Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (Viewers: #1, 6.92 million; A18-49: #1, 1.8/ 6) and the season-premiere of Don’t Forget the Lyrics (Viewers: #2, 5.72 million; A18-49: #1, 1.7/ 6). For a low HUT level Friday, these are respectable performances.
First overall in households and second in total viewers and adults 18-49 was CBS its line-up of two episodes of Ghost Whisperer (8 p.m. – Viewers: #2, 5.68 million; A18-49: #2, 1.5/ 5 --- 9 p.m. -- Viewers: #1, 6.16 million; A18-49: #2, 1.6/ 5) and Numb3rs (Viewers: #2, 6.22 million; A18-49: #2, 1.5/ 5). Coming up on CBS Friday at 9 p.m. in three weeks: romantic dramedy The Ex List (which is a long-shot to succeed).
ABC started out slow with annual The ALMA Awards at a mere (and fifth-place) 3.57 million viewers and a 1.0/ 3 among adults 18-49 from 8-10 p.m. But veteran 20/20 rebounded with a time period winning 7.93 million viewers and a 2.1/ 7 in the demo at 10 p.m. Comparably, that built from the 9:30 p.m. portion of the ALMA Awards (Viewers: 3.34 million; A18-49: 0.9/ 3) by a hefty 4.59 million viewers and 133 percent in the demo. The soon-to-relocate Wife Swap and Supernanny will move into the 8-10 p.m. block on Oct. 3.
NBC had little of note on Friday with a repeat of America’s Toughest Jobs (Viewers: #5, 3.43 million; A18-49: #4, 1.1/ 4) and a two-hour edition of Dateline (Viewers: #3, 5.42 million; A18-49: #2, 1.6/ 5 from 9-11 p.m.). And the CW capped off the evening with its soon-to-relocate Friday Night Smackdown! at 4.18 million viewers (#4) and a 1.3/ 4 (#4t) among adults 18-49. Coming up on the CW in the Friday 8 p.m. hour in three weeks: the season-premieres of sitcoms Everybody Hates Chris and The Game, which are unlikely to come close to the performance of Smackdown!

----------
-Saturday’s Winners: Saturday Night Football: Ohio State vs. USC (ABC)
-Saturday’s Losers (excluding repeats): CBS and NBC for not even bothering to program the evening.
----------
-Ratings Breakdown: It was no contest on Saturday, with Ohio State at USC on ABC’s Saturday Night Football at an estimated 10.50 million viewers and a 4.1 rating/13 share for the prime-time portion. Keep in mind, of course, that results for any live sporting event are always approximate. As I always say, viewers will respond if there is something worth watching on Saturday.
CBS finished second overall in total viewers and third among adults 18-49 on Saturday with its combination of a repeat of NCIS (Viewers: #2, 6.08 million; A18-49: #3, 1.4/ 4) and two episodes of 48 Hours Mystery as follows:
48 Hours Mystery R (CBS) 9:00 p.m. – Viewers: #3, 5.39 million (#2), A18-49: 1.1/ 1 3 (#3) 10:00 p.m. – Viewers: 6.16 million (#2), A18-49: 1.4/ 4 (#3)
Fox’s veteran combination of Cops (Viewers: #3, avg. 4.77; A18-49: #2, avg. 1.8/ 6) and America’s Most Wanted (Viewers: #3, 5.36 million; A18-49: #2, 1.9/ 6) finished third overall in total viewers and second among adults 18-49. And NBC capped off the evening with repeats of Chuck (Viewers: #4, 2.53 million; A18-49: #4, 0.8/ 3 at 8 p.m.) and two episodes of Law & Order: Criminal Intent (Viewers: 4.89 million; A18-49: 1.2/ 4 from 9-11 p.m.). Does anyone really think Chuck has the goods to succeed in season two? Personally, I don’t think so.

-Countdown to the Start of the New Season: 7 days
----------
-Yesterday’s Winners: Football Prime-Time Overrun (CBS), Sunday Night Football: Pittsburg at Cleveland (NBC)
-Yesterday’s Losers (excluding repeats) We’ll give the night a pass
----------
-Ratings Breakdown: Football ignited NBC led the overnight Sunday troops with the Pittsburgh at Cleveland match-up at an estimated 10.5 rating/17 share for the prime-time portion (from 8-11 p.m.). Earlier in the evening on NBC was the football pre-game at a mere 3.1/ 6 (#4) from 7-8 p.m. Keep in mind, of course, that results for any live sporting event are always approximate.
Due to an estimated 45-minute prime-time football overrun, all results on CBS are approximate. Following football was 60 Minutes, a Big Brother 10 clips show, and repeats of Cold Case and CSI: Miami. Here is the half-hour breakdown:
ABC finished a distant third in the overnights with its encore combination of America’s Funniest Home Videos (#2: 4.6/ 8), Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (#3: 4.5/ 7), and two episodes of Desperate Housewives (9:00 p.m. #4: 3.5/ 5; 10:00 p.m. #3: 3.6/ 6). Next was Fox care of back-to-back repeats of The Simpsons (#4: avg. 3.3/ 5 from 7-8 p.m.) and a repeat of the two-hour Fringe pilot (4.1/ 6 from 8-10 p.m.). And the CW was above-average with its encore line-up of One Tree Hill (#5: 1.0/ 2), Privileged (#5: 1.9/ 3) and America’s Next Top Model (#5: #5: 2.3/ 4). If Privileged does not work on Tuesday, maybe there is a future on Sunday.
Keep in mind that Fox aired The Emmy Awards on the year-ago Sunday, which resulted in the steep year-to-year erosion.

Ratings Box: What’s Hot/What’s Not
-Strong SNL Season Opener: The 34th season-premiere of NBC’s veteran Saturday Night Live kicked-off on Sept. 12 with a hefty 7.4 rating/18 share in the metered markets. Comparably, that was the highest local-market average for an SNL season debut since 2001, and an increase of 64 percent from one year-earlier (4.5/11 on Sept. 29, 2007).
-Season High Big Brother 10 and Flashpoint on CBS: The Sept. 11 installments of CBS’ Big Brother 10 and Flashpoint rose to season-high performances (and, in the case of Flashpoint, a series high). Big Brother 10 averaged a 5.0 rating/9 share in households, 7.82 million viewers, a 2.7/ 9 in adults 18-49 and a 3.3/ 9 among adults 25-54 at 8 p.m., building from one week earlier by 1.24 million viewers and as much as 17 percent in adults 18-49. Flashpoint finished first at 10 p.m. in households (5.8/10), total viewers (8.68 million), adults 18-49 (2.2/ 6) and adults 25-54 (2.9/ 8). Comparably, that was up from its last original episode (on Aug. 21, 2008) by 18 percent in households, 1.47 million viewers and 16 percent in both adults 18-49 and adults 25-54.
-Above Average The View on ABC: The 12th season-premiere of ABC’s The View opened with 931,000 women 18-49 on Tuesday, Sept. 2 -- three percent above last season’s opener and the second most-watched season launch since the 2001-01 season. Overall, The View averaged 3.4 million viewers for the week -- it’s most-watched in six weeks.
-Judge Judy Soars in New York: The Friday, Sept. 12 overnight performance for CBS Television Distribution’s Judge Judy rose to a 4.5/11 on WCBS in New York at 4:30 p.m. -- the highest rating and share sign-on to sign-off on the station, including CBS in prime-time. Judge Judy also finished first in the 4 p.m. hour on WCBS (ahead of Oprah on WABC) for the week of Sept. 8.
-New Syndicated Series Premieres – Week One Overnight Results: What follows are the first week overnight results for the five first-run syndicated strips debuting this week -- The Bonnie Hunt Show (Warner Bros./Telepictures), Deal or No Deal (NBC), The Doctors (CBS Television Distribution), Family Court With Judge Penny (Program Partners) and Judge Karen from Sony Pictures Television. The benchmarks are lead-in and year-ago time period averages. And the rule of thumb, once again, is that one week of overnights does not a hit or miss make. But if there is one overall observation to be made, it is clearly the lack of an immediate breakout hit, which no longer seems possible in daytime syndication.
The one concern for Bonnie Hunt at present remains the 23 percent fall-off from the lead-in average.
-------------------------
Deal or No Deal (NBC)
Sept. 2007: 1.3/ 3
Monday 9/08 Lead-in: 1.5/ 4 DEAL OR NO DEAL: 1.4/ 3
Tuesday 9/09 Lead-in: 1.3/ 3 DEAL OR NO DEAL: 1.2/ 3
Wednesday 9/10 Lead-in: 1.3/ 3 DEAL OR NO DEAL: 1.0/ 3
Thursday 9/11 Lead-in: 1.3/ 3 DEAL OR NO DEAL: 1.1/ 3
Friday 9/12 Lead-in: 1.2/ 3 DEAL OR NO DEAL: 1.1/ 3
Week One Average: Lead-in: 1.3/ 3 DEAL OR NO DEAL: 1.2/ 3
With just a one-tenth of a rating point deficit from both the lead-in and year-ago time period averages, Deal or No Deal was indeed sampled in daytime.
--------------------
The Doctors (CBS Television Distribution)
Sept. 2007: 1.8/ 5
Monday 9/08 Lead-in: 1.9/ 5 THE DOCTORS: 1.6/ 4
Tuesday 9/09 Lead-in: 1.6/ 5 THE DOCTORS: 1.4/ 4
Wednesday 9/10 Lead-in: 1.6/ 5 THE DOCTORS: 1.3/ 4
Thursday 9/11 Lead-in: 1.9/ 6 THE DOCTORS: 1.4/ 4
Friday 9/12 Lead-in: 1.5/ 4 THE DOCTORS: 1.3/ 4
Week One Average: Lead-in: 1.7/ 5 THE DOCTORS: 1.4/ 4
The strongest lead-in support benefited The Doctors, which has an advantage over the four competing new first-run strips. But erosion of 18 percent from the lead-in average and 22 percent from the year-ago time period average are not positive.
-------------------------
Family Court With Judge Penny (Program Partners)
Sept. 2007: 0.8/ 3
Monday 9/08 Lead-in: 0.8/ 3 FAMILY COURT WITH JUDGE PENNY: 0.9/ 3
Tuesday 9/09 Lead-in: 0.8/ 3 FAMILY COURT WITH JUDGE PENNY: 0.9/ 3
Wednesday 9/10 Lead-in: 0.9/ 3 FAMILY COURT WITH JUDGE PENNY: 0.8/ 3
Thursday 9/11 Lead-in: 0.8/ 3 FAMILY COURT WITH JUDGE PENNY: 0.8/ 3
Friday 9/12 Lead-in: 0.8/ 2 FAMILY COURT WITH JUDGE PENNY: 0.8/ 2
Week One Average: Lead-in: 0.8/ 3 FAMILY COURT WITH JUDGE PENNY: 0.8/ 3
Full retention from both benchmarks is two positives for Family Court With Judge Penny.
Week One Average: Lead-in: 0.9/ 3 JUDGE KAREN: 0.9/ 3
With full retention from the lead-in, worthy Judge Karen was sampled in week one.

Wow for those CW encores. Privileged and Top Model really stood out. I do agree Marc that Privileged could probably end up being a decent Sunday option should they give it something like Top Model repeats as a lead in but the deal with MRC will of course prevent that. I do see Privileged lasting the full season.
America's Next Top Model: Never underestimate the viewer value of having attractive women kissing eachother.
As mushu pointed out, CW will not have Sunday as an option for encores once MRC's lease takes over the night. The Privileged number is a good sign that CW won't be totally dead when they are in rerun season. Marc should really take a look at Privileged for an episode or two. It doesn't look to be anything like Gossip Girl. It is probably closer to that 'family drama' genre that he has been missing.
The show screams Gilmore Girls from what I've seen in previews and such. Give the fans some time to find it. This show may surprise everyone yet. If 90210 collapses (unlikely but still possible), then they should consider moving Privileged to Wednesdays and hold off on Stylista until midseason and use it to replace Top Model in January.
Holding back Stylista would be a huge mistake. Out of the new shows, this one will appeal the most to their target demo. They should have had it up front and with the other premieres. Even so, it should build on the ANTM audience. Moving Privileged to Wednesdays where it will have to face either Pushing Daisies or Private Practice, two huge female draws, is another huge mistake.
Privilege's encore numbers (which are at best OK, definately not spectacular) are more due to it being new and a lack of options more than having any track record of stable and/or growing fanbase. Way too early to call it another "Gilmore Girl" or that it would even attract that fanbase. We're going on one set of final numbers and a preliminary that can change wildly.
I was stunned when I saw the Sunday overnights for the Privileged encore.

Did the Chicago air the Cubs game and pre-empt the CW programming? If so, I'm sure the no-hitter would have attracted the extra viewers.
