Prime-Time Metered Market Thursday Ratings: CBS Wins; Improved 30 Rock on NBC

----------
-Percent Change From the Year-Ago Evening (Thursday, November 8, 2007): NBC: - 4, CW: -10, ABC: -18, Fox: -30, CBS: -31
----------
Note: The fast affiliate results for Thursday will be posted at PIFeedback by 12 p.m. ET. Go to the website, click on Ratings Box (the first category), then Last Night’s Results, and Thursday, November 6, 2008.
-Honorable Mention: The Office (NBC), 30 Rock (NBC)
-Disappointing: Eleventh Hour (CBS)
-Yesterday’s Losers (excluding repeats): My Name is Earl (NBC), Kath & Kim (NBC), Kitchen Nightmares (Fox), Life on Mars (ABC)
----------
-Ratings Breakdown: CBS led this 8th night of the November 2008 sweeps in the overnights, beating second-place ABC by 16 percent. But ABC still remains the network to beat among adults 18-49. Third overall was NBC, followed by Fox and the CW. One look at the year-to-year averages listed above, and erosion was the common, and unfortunate, observation last night.
CBS’ veteran Survivor: Gabon kicked-off the evening first in the 8 p.m. hour, with a 7.0 rating/11 share in the overnights. But one year earlier (on Nov. 8, 2007), Survivor: China averaged an 8.4/13. How did you like that Susie last night? She is clearly not as dumb as her Kota tribe members seen to think. And, personally, I think Corinne is the biggest villain since Jerry Manthey.
Second at 8 p.m. was ABC’s Ugly Betty at a 6.6/10, just six percent below Survivor: Gabon. But Survivor will surely widen the gap among adults 18-49. After three seasons, shouldn’t Betty be getting her braces off? Rounding off the hour were NBC sitcoms My Name is Earl (4.2/ 7) and the abysmal Kath & Kim (3.6/ 6), which should never have been picked-up for the full season, a repeat of Kitchen Nightmares on Fox (3.2/ 5), and the CW’s Smallville at a 2.9/ 5. One year earlier, Smallville averaged a 3.5/ 5.
It was business as usual at 9 p.m., with CBS’ CSI (11.1/17) the top-rated show of the evening in the overnights, followed by Grey’s Anatomy on ABC at a 9.5/15. Compared to one year earlier, however, both dramas were down by 21 percent (CSI: 14.1/21 to 11.1/17; Grey’s Anatomy: 12.0/18 to 9.5/15).
Third in the 9 p.m. hour were NBC’s The Office (5.0/ 8) and 30 Rock (5.1/ 8), featuring a guest appearance by Oprah Winfrey. The positive news for 30 Rock was growth of two percent out of The Office, almost full retention in the overnights from its above-average season-opener one week earlier (5.3/ 8 on Oct. 30), and growth of 19 percent from year-ago occupant Scrubs (4.3/ 6 on Nov. 8, 2007). As for the show itself…oh, yeah…it was good. Damn funny, in fact.
Rounding off the 9 p.m. hour was an original installment of Fox’s Kitchen Nightmares (3.4/ 5) and Supernatural on the CW (2.4/ 4).
Top-rated overnight honors at 10 p.m. went to CBS’ recently introduced Eleventh Hour, which averaged a 7.3/13. But before anyone cracks open a bottle of bubbly at CBS, keep in mind that retention for Eleventh Hour out of the second half of lead-in CSI (11.2/17 at 9:30 p.m.) was just 65 percent. Year-ago occupant Without a Trace, meanwhile, averaged a 14.8/24 in this time period. Nope…Eleventh Hour is not a hit.
Second in the overnight at 10 p.m. was NBC’s soon-to-conclude ER (6.0/10), which is a shell of its former self in the ratings, and ABC’s Life on Mars (5.8/10), which held only 60 percent of the 9:30 p.m. portion of lead-in Grey’s Anatomy (9.7/15). Life on Mars, in addition, could not even match the overnight performance of year-ago failed occupant Big Shots (6.6/11 on Nov. 8, 2007).

-The CW Scraps Plans for The Graysons: Plans for a pilot on the CW called The Graysons, a drama focusing on Dick Grayson pre his Robin the Boy Wonder days, will not move forward. The Graysons was being potentially eyed as the replacement for veteran Smallville on Thursday. But talk of a new version of Melrose Place on the CW continues to escalate.
-FX Cancels 30 Days: Three-year-old non-scripted series 30 Days from Super Size Me creator Morgan Spurlock has concluded production on FX and will not be returning for a fourth season. At present, that means there are no original non-scripted series on the cable net.
-Fox in Midseason: Fox has unveiled its first quarter 2009 prime-time line-up, which will kick-off with the two-hour return of the long-awaited 24 on Monday, Jan. 12. The network will introduce two new dramas (Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse and Lie To Me, from the producers of 24), while rolling out new seasons of American Idol, Hell’s Kitchen and the aforementioned 24. Four current series (House, Bones, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and Hole in the Wall) will move to new time periods, with changes impacting six nights of the week (excluding Saturday’s perennial combination of Cops and America’s Most Wanted).
Medical drama House will anchor Mondays, leading into 24 at 9 p.m. American Idol will return to its established Tuesday 8 p.m. time period (including a two-hour season opener on Jan. 13), leading into recently introduced Fringe. But the live American Idol Results Show on Wednesday will move into the 8 p.m. hour, and into new drama Lie To Me, which follows a deception expert and his team as they assist law enforcement and government agencies to expose the truth behind the cover-ups.
Thursday will feature relocated Bones and a new season of Hell’s Kitchen, which opens on Jan. 29. Friday will consist of relocated Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and Dollhouse, with Buffy, the Vampire Slayer’s Eliza Dushku as a member of an illegal underground group whose personalities have been wiped clean in place of any number of new personas. The new Friday line-up begins on Feb. 13 in place of Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? and Don’t Forget the Lyrics, which will return at a later time.
Two episodes of the non-scripted Hole in the Wall, meanwhile, will air in the Sunday 7 p.m. hour into the established 8-10 p.m. animated rotation of The Simpsons, King of the Hill, Family Guy and American Dad. Prison Break and ‘Til Death, which are also not on the line-up, will return at a later time.
Here is Fox’s updated midseason line-up (with new shows in caps). For my personal thoughts on the line-up, listen to today’s PIPodcast at marcberman.tv.
Monday 8:00 p.m.: House (new day, effective Jan. 19) 9:00 p.m.: 24 (two-hour season-premiere beginning at 8 p.m. ET, Jan. 12)
Friday 8:00 p.m.: Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (new day and time, Feb. 13) 9:00 p.m.: DOLLHOUSE (series premiere, Feb. 13)
Saturday 8:00 p.m.: Cops 9:00 p.m.: America’s Most Wanted
Sunday 7:00 p.m.: Hole in the Wall (time period premiere, Jan. 18) 7:30 p.m.: Hole in the Wall (time period premiere, Jan. 18) 8:00 p.m.: The Simpsons 8:30 p.m.: King of the Hill 9:00 p.m.: Family Guy 9:30 p.m.: American Dad _______________________________________________________________________

Agreed. It is more of a 'time slot hit', like Samantha Who.

You just gotta love Appollo Creed coming into the ER as a former boxer, though. I lov ethe guest stars on this show. One of the best parts of a series like ER is that it allows for great guest appearances.

ABC’s Life on Mars (5.8/10), which held only 60 percent of the 9:30 p.m. portion of lead-in Grey’s Anatomy (9.7/15).
Looks like it held from last week (even as GA dropped), which is more than the other 10 pm shows can say.
I'll echo Obveeus' statements about Life on Mars. I'm hoping that this has stabilized somewhat. Should be able to at least tie 11th Hour in the demos this week, if not beat it. The main thing going against it is the incompatible lead in, but that's old news. That retention from the lead in is better than what B&S, ABC's highest rated 10pm show does out of Desperate Housewives.

I didn't say that I liked her, I just don't see how she is a 'villian'. Are you basing this on her desire to vote off a non-alliance member (Suzie) that specifically told her (Corinne)that they planned to vote her off? How does that make her a villian? The biggest 'villian' I saw this season was Kelly and she is long gone already. maybe Ken or Crystal will emerge as villains, but right now I just don't see any evil people on the tribes.

In the interest of full disclosure, the year ago Big Shots included seven minutes of GA overrun, so the numbers are probably actually pretty close, and the LOM retention will be a lot better. And the year-ago WAT was the second half of the crossover, so the 11H drop is bigger than it usually would be.
About "Life on Mars" ... looking back at last week (which was an improvement over the previous week) and comparing it to this week, this week showed a slight improvement (5.8/10 last night vs. 5.8/9 last week) on the week to week numbers.
Does it say more about me or about "Survivor" that I have seen every episode this season and I have no idea who Corinne is. I don't know who any of them are from week to week. No impression left from week to week at all.

Survivor editing focuses most of the airtime on the losing tribe since they are the ones that have to go to TC and opust a member. Corinne has been on the winning tribe in almost every episode, along with Marcus and Charlie. Only Marcus has been very visible among that threesome.
I agree. The fact that LOM has stabilized in a timeslot where other series have declined weekly should give ABC more than enough confidence to continue on with LOM.

don't think so, B&S has better retention. Here are the results from the latest airings:
viewers demo
Life on Mars from GA 57.1% 49.2%
B&S from DH 60.4% 58.6%

That's pretty close, and it still looks bad on B&S because that has aired post-Housewives for 3 seasons now and its much more compatible with its lead in than Life on Mars is. LOM has aired after Greys, which has virtually a put a curse on that Thur. 10pm slot to all new programs, only a few times, and is holding steady while B&S has seemed to be losing viewers. Nice try spin master.

spin? you're the spinmaster. B&S is 10 pts higher in the demo and is up against football.

Her comment about Size being 47 was obnoxious. I think she is ride and arrogant, and hope she goes home soon. Can't stand her.
